I think this is the most interesting person in Japanese History. He was committed to destroying the bakufu system but he aimed to do it politically when everyone else was trying to do it violently. He worked with people within the bakufu (Katsu Kaishu) as well as enemies of it (Saigo Takamori, Kido Takayoshi, Takasugi Shinsaku).
He also understood the importance of having a strong navy and constantly worked to develop Japan's naval power even though it was on the verge of civil war.
Unfortunately he was assassinated before the Bakufu was overthrown. However, his ideas served as the blueprint for the Meiji government.

Do you guys know anything about him? He's got to be one of the most colorful characters in all of Japanese History.

There is an article about him on Wiki :http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sakamoto_Ryoma

Sakamoto Ryōma was killed at the age of 33 (according to the old lunar calendar he was born on November 15 1835 and killed on his birthday in 1867) at the Omiya inn in Kyoto, not long before the Meiji Restoration took place. It is rumored that he was killed by the Shinsengumi; however, Japanese history books report his death was at the hands of his own men, who grew jealous of Sakamoto's ever-increasing power and influence.

Today, some people even write to Ryoma to ask advice, as if he were alive. For many years he has been a hero to many Japanese, especially the young and those in the universities...........
He was named Ryoma(—´”nj
they say .."when he was born, there was a straight abundant mane in his back like dragon or horse.."
