Haha, Made of Stone, you're very unusal, you like both Takoyaki and Monja...?
I like Takoyaki but I've only tried Monja once in my whole life and I think that's enough. :P

Have you tried Akashi-yaki? I think it's a brother/sister of Takoyaki, and I love it.

Good luck on your Okonomi lunch. :)

Haha, Cue, perhaps it is unusual!

Yes, I ate Akashi-yaki in Hyogo-ken (I am a takoyaki fanatic, so it had to be lol)
It's takoyaki in a kind of soup (more like a broth actually). Akashi is famous for its delicious octopus, so that was nice. But I didn't like it so much, I missed my beloved sauce! :bawling:

You've only tried monja once? Try it again, you might like it! I was faithful to Kansai food at first, but I grew to love monja. Kimchi monja...mmmm! :)

When I was little and still living in Germany, my family went to this Japanese restaurant...sadly,I don't know(or remember) what food was served...o.o
Upon moving to the Phils. we don't go to Japanese restaurants anymore...

That reminds me, during my grade school years, in our Home economics class, we were tasked to make/cook a Japanese meal...and me and my groupmates made sushi....(that was so long ago...I don't even remember how it tasted) XD

But I do remember one thing that accompanied "our sushi" ---WASABI... -.-
I absolutely despise wasabi and I was so stupid by tasting it...XD

*choosing from the list,I'd pick sushi....I have no idea what the others are...I'm soo ignorant...XD(except TEMPURA...I know what it is)

Some posters wrote about how bad natto smells. It is only smelly if its old. Fresh natto does not have too much of a smell, unless you stick your nose in it. I had some prejudice against natto until I accidentally bought a natto roll sushi from a convenience store. It was good and not smelly.:-) (If anyone wants to try this, I advise checking the package date. Get the freshest available.)

Talking about convenience stores, I also like the musubi (nori covered rice balls) that are sold there. Most come with something stuck in the middle like salmon, tuna salad, or pickled plum. A couple of those with a couple of pieces of fried chicken and a cold can of green tea make a great lunch in the summertime.

The traditional Japanese breakfast of rice, grilled salmon, miso soup, and nori is also great. It's not as heavy as I thought it would be and keeps you going way into the afternoon without hunger.

none of those since i am a vegetarian. i am partial to gomadoofu and shoojin ryoori (the whole hog, so to speak). good yudoofu and sansai are also tasty. zaru soba without dipping sauce that isn't fish based is yummy. i quite like wagashi (japanese cakes) especially ichigo daifuku and anko based sweets.

I love that stuff but the theaters/cinemas must stink because the only dried squids I've eaten have been pretty smelly. They say that Matsumae, and neighboring Fukushima towns (close to Hakodate city) produce about 80% of dried surume squid in the market.

I mainly like chicken ramen, mainly because a lot of the seafood/fish ones I am not too fond of.

I want ramen now..

I had all of those meals while I was in Japan except for okonomiyaki and nikujaga. My 3 favorite meals are Udon + Ramen, Sushi/Sashimi and Sukiyaki. I also ate beans (without peal) as a snack with my host family. dont know the name for it but they were so good and much bether than chips or any other snack (and much healthier !).

I had Shabu Shabu but without the vegetables. I went to a Shabu Shabu place together with a bunch of other students but we kinda lacked money. so when we were checking the menu we only wanted to get the japanese beef but no set which wasnt possible at first, but the staff made an exception for us. they even gave us a free salad to start with. Again prove that Japanese people are very kind..

Udon or Sushi.... thats a really hard choice. Sushi doesn't really fill me up like Udon does. But, sushi is very good too............. Well, i pick a bowl of Udon with 2 Sashimi on the side. It's gotta be octopus or smoked samon. I like eel too but i just rather have those two :-)

i had 2 octopus sashimi, 2 squid nigiri, and a salmon on ginger (just raw fish. no rice or anything). Then i had a giant bowl of spicy teriyaki chicken with udon. I felt so full after that but... holy cow was that GOOOOOOODDDD. :hey:

Sashimi is my favorite on your poll list and it is what I voted for, but more specifically my favorite is tataki.

The absolute best foods I have tried were both at ryokans (Japanese inns):
-yuba in boiled green soy milk (Not sure why the milk was green but it was GOOD)
-katsuo tataki in Kochi, Shikoku

Sorry I can't translate..... I'm not really sure how to say these things in English!! (yuba...tataki... I just looked up "katsuo" and it says "bonito"...but err, does that really help anybody who doesn't know Japanese?)

Is it really that obvious what Sushi is? Most people still believe Sushi only consists of raw fish. They sometimes make me wanna shout: Heck, sushi can be even without fish!
Anyways, I chose Okonomiyaki but I had a pretty hard time to decide since I also love Ramen and Udon and Gyouza and Tonkatsu, well I love almost EVERYTHING on the list. But then again, I might just be greedy for food.

White Girl, if it's any help, Bonito is a dry flaked fish product that is cooked in water to make fish broth. Yuba is just thin sheets of dried soy milk (it's like a cousin of tofu and is sometimes called Bean Curd Skin). Hope that helps....

Natto is good for you. It's the Japanese version of cheese. Fermented and high in protein but smelly, especially if old.

Gyoza is good...pero no me gustos los albondingas.

During a great day of skiing in the Japanese Alps, in powder snow, it's great to be able to go into one of the restaurants next to the slopes and dig into a hot bowl of UDON! It's so delicious with its its subtle broth (much more interesting than ramen broth, IMO) and the chewy, thick noodles just hits the spot. :relief:

I had the kitsune udon with that fried bean curd thing which was a sweet contrast to the lightly salty broth. Oishikatta! The meal gave me stamina for the rest of the day of awesome skiing in knee deep powder. Yeah! :p

Of course, sushi and sashimi are true delicious when it is good and well prepared fish.

However, my best surprise was Tonyu Nabe (Hot pot in soya milk). It is healthy, tasty and quite cheap to prepare. I also like the atmosphere of nabe meals (where you prepare the food yourself).

Hi everybody.....I need someone to help me with a simple question on Japanese food. A friend of mine tasted a special dessert on a Japanese restaurant. According to her description it was a plate of small seeds, round shaped and very small - the size of small fish eye -. The seeds were served in a sort of juice and the dessert was sweet. I know nothing else except that she was told Japanese brides usually eat/ate that speciality before the wedding as in this way she would have a very soft skin on the wedding day. Does anybody have any idea about what such dessert might be? Thank you in advance for any help.

I go crazy for TONKATSU!

I am yet to fully explore Japanese cuisine though. I would love to try a greater variation than I already have.

I have finally tried, started to regularly consume and enjoy natto ! - even if it seems to horrify so many.

Yes - it does smell a tad like discarded underwear (but not too bad), but I find the flavour quite nice in many dishes - almost like caramel. It's also quite versatile. I have used it on rice, in soups, as a filling in meat dishes etc. etc. I wouldn't say it's my favourite food - but I now just have to have some in my larder ....

And it's not expensive.

Go mad! Force yourselves!

The cream puff is in line with the recent popular trend, different textures in a food. The outer puff is crispy, and the inner is very creamy.

I really wanted to order the gobo burdock pizza, but they don't sell it anymore.

The gobo itself has nice texture. I don't know where to sue the pizza giant for neglecting gobo-loving minorities.

Pipokun's mentioning of Gobo reminded me of my favorite Japanese soup, けんちん汁 (Kenchin-jiru). It is somewhat similar to the Italian Minestrone. I am sure there are various recipes but in MY household, it is made with chicken, Daikon, Konnyaku, Carrot, Tofu and Gobo. What you do is just stir-fry the chicken and the viggies with a little bit of oil in a large stock pot and add water, then flavour it with sone soy sause and maybe some sesame oil to taste. It is very simple yet SOOOOO good especially on a cold winter night.
I like to pour the soup over a bowl of white rice and eat it with a spoon! lol

It is great to cook a large amount of it and eat it over a few days. At the end, you can dump some left over rice and let it simmer for a while a la Risotto. MMmmmmmmm~~~~~ Mom!!!

Before suing the pizza company, I got calm down to try find what I could do by myself.

I used the leftover of Tori-Gobo, a soy-sauce flavored and a bit sweet chicken and gobo dish. Just placed it on one side of toast.
I don't know what the company used for their sesame sauce, so I just used the bottled sesame salad dressing and add a small amount of mayo for a bit richer flavor. Toss it with the gobo and place it with enoki mushroom on the other side of toast.

Put as much as cheese you want, then toast the bread well.

Cheese has been recently expensive as you can see my photos.
I don't know who I should sue for the cheese price hike.

Instant ramen noodles are generally considered as a cheap food in Japan or around the world. But I heard the market is very competitive here, only one or two brand(s) can be survived from 500-600 new brands every year.

And the competition esp., at the convenient store is much harder, so it might be possible where an ex-tourist, student, or expat would asked a question "where can I buy my super favorite cup noodle bought/ate last year?", but no Japanese would know it at all.
Or even after you'd be lucky enough to find the brand, it is highly likely that the materialistic or customer-oriented monster under the name of convini would slightly change its taste/flavor every year/season. Actually they do.

Watermelons and peaches have gone with summer. The fruit you'll see most often at grocers now is kaki (persimmon). Sweet and tasty, the perfect fruit for autumn (besides pears).

If I can't have kaki (persimmon), nashi will do at this time of year. Nashi (Japanese Pear) is like a cross between an apple an a pear. Unlike European pears, nashi is crisp like an apple and full of juice, but at the same time it's a little grainy like a pear. Anyway, it's really good. but expensive. In California, I remember paying US$ 1 for one pear. However, in Tokyo, when it's on sale, I can get one for about 100 yen (US$ 1).

If you ever get a chance, try one! Guaranteed to please.

I couldn't decide between Sushi and Ramen here. I do love a lot of Japanese food though, and the food I can't find to buy I usually end up making myself (although I am unsure as to whether I am making it correctly). I make my own home made sushi too. ^_^.

The great thing about Japanese food, is I love every single thing on that list. They really "get" food, the same with authentic Italian food. In contrast, while I like many kinds of American and ethnic food, it's hit and miss.

Like Italian, Japanese focuses a lot on simple quality and skillful preparation. And in Japan, people hold good standards and supermarkets/restaurants have to cater to that. You can get perfect and ripe vegetables in most places, and taste a big difference.

It is '(O)Manju' if the red bean (paste) is inside.
It is Ohagi or botamochi if the red bean (paste) is outside. And there are some alternatives, sweet sesame paste/edamame paste, etc., outside.

It is Anpan if you use yeast dough bum. (A mutant=>Andonut; deep-frying anpan like donuts, and sometimes sprinkling sugar on it)

It is Anpan Man if it is a popular anime hero.

Very good observation! The Japanese, well not in every case but, like to prepare food by enhancing the unique cahracteristic of the ingredients, not by adding seasoning on top of seasonig like say French cooking, although there are some similarity between those two.

You see people throw in a pan fresh tomatoes, some sea salt, fresh basil combined with pasta, or chickpeas sauteed in olive oil and garlic, put some grated parmesan for snack in Italian cooking. I see similar techniques in traditional Japanese food.

I just wanted to say that I went a little adventerous in the sushi bar and tried some Eel. It just tastes like chewy chicken. Anybody else find this?

I am sure I said earlier in this thread that my favourite is Ramen and Sushi. I'd just like to emphasise that point further. ^_^

Although, I do love Dorayaki... a dessert not on the above list.

Years ago when I was in the US Navy we were in and out of Sasebo a lot. My favorite food down there was champon noodles which I believe was originally a Chinese dish. It seemed to be popular in Kyushu more than elsewhere in Japan. Have not had any in years. I need to find a Japanese restaurant run by Kyushu people here in Norfolk, Virginia so I can get a big bowl of the stuff. :-)

I love that Japanese spegetti!
I miss wafuu spaghetti. When I was living in Japan I sometimes made a delicious tarako white sauce spaghetti. I also remember mentaiko pizza toast fondly.

I live in California, so it's not hard to get the basic sushi, tonkatsu, donburi and such. It's not the same, of course, but reasonably close.

I do miss things like the more unusual varieties of tofu such as tamagodofu or kurogomadofu. I also miss renkon; it became my favorite tenpura ingredient.

Omuraisu was another favorite that I haven't seen mentioned (though with 15 pages I may well have missed it).

I try to learn how to make Sushi. But it is not so easy. In my restaurant, those chefs have to learn how to make a good rice before even cut the fish.
These days, I am trying on collecting some Sushi Recipe and then practice at home. Exactly, I should be an expert at how to make sushi rice.

I really like sushi an most other types of Japanese food, but my favorite has to be a breaded pork dish my best friend cooked for me before I went to school in Oregon. Resting on a bed of rice it was crunchy and tender at the same time. :42:

She topped it with a dab of Japanese mayo which was different in a good way. I also got to try a Japanese salad that she made. My stomache is roaring just thinking about it! :bawling:

Friday nights it was video games, movies, and one of us would cook dinner. She would make Japanese food for us and I would teach her to cook Mexican food. More than one Friday night I found in her fridge everything to make her favorite Mexican dish. :clueless: So I got stuck cooking most times. :D I got her and her friends hooked on Mexican food!

It bites that she went back to Japan before she could make it again. :(

I haven't had the pleasure of trying much Japanese food (excluding drinks, sweets and snacks). I've obviously had sushi, and I've also had ramen and tempura, but that's about it.

So I'd probably have to say ramen here :-P Hopefully I'll get to try more Japanese food in the near future. I do LOVE mochi though. Its not listed but I love it so much that I have to mention it! :-P

Especially when its used in daifuku with the red bean paste. OMG yum! I probably like it so much because its also popular in the Phillipines and I'm half Filipino. I also love the Filipino variant of mochi called Palitaw, which is with sesame seeds and/or coconut (and the ones I usually have are filled with peanut-butter, delicious!!).
