I started playing Capcom's Street Fighter 2 as my first 2D fighting game in the arcades and then getting the SNES/SuperFamicom version at home.
At the same time SNK released not only various Fatal Fury Games but also Art of Fighting, Samurai Spirits/Showdown, KoF but its success was limited to the arcades and Neo Geo owners.
IMO SNK was doing better in improving character designs than Capcom's inventory (although Capcom later introduced Vampire Hunters/Darkstalkers Marvel vs Capcom etc.)
Then finally even a Capcom vs SNK game came out although the graphics were clearly in favour of Capcom's presentation style.
Younger gamers tend to stick with the 3D fighting games like Virtua Fighter, Dead or Alive, Tekken and Soul Calibur. But IMO the flair of the good old sprites animated 2D characters with its backgrounds are very nostalgic for us old fighting game veterans :-)
