Can someone please give me some tips on how to prepare and cut fugu, this is not for a restaurant or anything I just noticed alot of Fugu swimming around in front of my house and cos i won't be going to japan anytime soon it would be a great oppurtunity to taste this strange looking fish. Thanks (I know they're poisonous and I know alot of people die but I am willing to risk it).

You maybe the shortest membership on record if you try to eat Fugu. I sugest you give your JREF password to a relative or friend, so they can inform us of your death or illness.I have read where long time fugu chefs have died , suggest you stick to Tuna or whale blubba or what ever else is available in Fiji. Good luck!

Eating Fugu have for long time been popular among people who are fed with their life.
The Japanese poet Yosa Buson (1716–1783) expressed some of this feeling in a famous haiku:
I cannot see her tonight.
I have to give her up
So I will eat fugu.
I understand that the most poisonous is the liver. Only specially trained chefs can safely serve the fish. I recommend: let the fish swim - and live a long and happy life!

Or, go to a certified cooking school that offers classes for fugu cook license, in order to learn proper knifework/procedure to remove toxic parts (unless getting private lessons.)
Also recommended is to pay for extra money to practice more, in order to pass the examination. Umprocessed fugu costs a few thousand yen each at fish markets anyways.

11-Use cell phone to call an ambulance.

If fugu doesn't work we can probably get instructions for seppuku from someone.
To be honest misterx, your question is one of the best from a new member I have seen in years, I hope you are around for more posts!
Welcome to JREF!!

thank you very much for going out of your way to write me those instructions, atleast now I have a basic idea of how to prepare it god bless. Suprisingly enough a thorough search of the internet did not reveal any information on cutting Fugu, I can understand why though. And for your information I shall not be the first to eat the Fugu there are plenty of useless fauna wondering around the Fiji Island such as cane toads and mongoose (also the dog that killed my Cat) which will be more than worthy candidates to taste the tasty Fugu morsels, I hear the death is a painless one so please don't go crying to the SPCA or anything as I love animals. Also as a matter of interest Fugu happen to be the most placid, curious fish in the water, which makes spearing them very easy. Watch this space for an update in the next several days, have a jolly Xmas y'all. :-)

one more thing, are the spikes on the Fugu poisonous? I was wondering if one had to wear gloves while handling them? The internet did not yield any clues. Any help or suggestion would be most appreciated.

the Fugu was beautiful, I had it yesterday with some friends and they enjoyed it too. Didn't feel any effects or tingling on the lips which was disappointing it tasted like sashimi basted in Flour, quite an odd texture, but nonetheless it just goes to show that YOU CAN CUT YOUR OWN FUGU so shame on you nay sayers like mr white!

Wow, the things I miss while I'm away...
About time you returned my dear! My poor husband cries himself to sleep every night, he missed you so.

No the spikes are not poisonous as you'll find out trying to fish off a peer in Japan you'll catch 85% fugu haha. Although I was shack the firs 10-20 I caught ...my trusty Japanese friend told me they are harmless unless cut by misterx and eaten! :-)
