What does キヅ mean? It is possibly an animal name, i guess from the text it is contained in.
By the way, way do some animal names are written in katakana, like サル (monkey)?

I don't know キヅ in Japanese. Is this an animal name?

Namakemono-san is right. You got the katakana character read mistakenly.
キヅ (read "kizu") should be キジ (read "kiji," meaning pheasant)

The sentence means: (He) gave a millet dumpling to the pheasant and got it to become a companion on his journey. (Probably from the story of "Momotaro (Peach Boy).")

HTH! :-)

Yeah, you are right. I read it wrong. It is キジ.:p
And you're right again, that is from Momotaro (from Nihon no Mukashibanashi).

One more thing I wonder, what is a millet dumpling?

One more thing I wonder, what is a millet dumpling?Millet is a type of grain, it would be an ingrediant in the dough used to make the dumpling, a common Asian food sometimes steamed, sometimes fried containing meat & at times cabbage...
