The thread for these boys seems to be waning so I thought I'd add my two cents, stir the bottom, what have you.

Must say that there two recent mini-album releases are their best yet. I was initially not impressed with the band when they debut with Scream Guiltily, but have since developed a fondness for the act.

I remember meeting them late last year at the Liquid Room in Ebisu during - I believe - the Versailles debut. They were standing around idle in the hall during a band change so I thought I would just pounce on them and introduce myself... lay some comment on them etc.

Well.... they don't speak English, and damn... they are as shy as all get out.
Of course the sight of a 200lb, six-foot foreigner coming up to them, saying hello, saying how cool he thought they were, CDs etc, and how he wished he had hair as cool as theirs, kinda took'em by surprise. They did do a lot of bowing though. Always fun to meet visual bands. Vidoru was cool when I met then about four years ago, upstairs in the office of Like An Edison CD shop. Their drummer played me his cellphone ringer... the sound of a girl moaning and moaning and moaning. He thought it was funny as hell.

:love:Aw, you make me want to meet them more! I love their music! I heard about them when I saw them in my Cure magazine. I WANT TO MEET THEM! It's cute that they're shy though too. :p I love them.

Bunshinsaba
Dec 30, 2007, 12:18
Well I am not sure whether Metis gretel was shy because "they are shy" or because it was mixed with a little shock!! If you met them it might be a little different. You are a 17-year-old girl so maybe they wouldn't have acted so shy - then again. Me? When I meet most visual bands I tend to shock them. I'm big (not fat big, gym big) and I am 45 years old. No visual band in Japan sees me coming when I meet them. They are like... "Whoah.... WHAT THE F**K!!! Doesn't this guy know VK is for high school girls?"

Alas, the "being a foreign male" is definitiely an advantage in visual kei and it has done me well over the years as I have been allowed in dressing rooms and back stage on occasion. At one club about three years ago, I was backstage talking to Kisaki and Rame (vidoru) while 12012 where undressing and changing clothes after their set. Even foreign girls who live in Tokyo and attend lives for a long time will admit that foreign boys have it "easier" than them. It is easier for foreign boys to cross the "fan barrier"..... we are guys... the band are guys... there is an instant understanding and logic. Girls.... really really have to work to be seen and treated as anything but a fan.

So many factors come into play in this VK culture.

^^ I really liked the minis too! Wish they'd had more new songs but its okay It was cool to hear "Eden" remix but I still like the original hehe ..they change their look too I like Sui hair!
Aren't they releasing a album?? I'm not sure I read it somewhere..

^o^ your so lucky to see them live! XD lol I can imagine you must of really surprise them!
wish I can see them someday..

KISAKI?!?!?!?!?
Now I feel really left out... But I can understand the whole "being a guy thing." But even though, I would still treat them like they are humans, because that's exactly what they are.
I'm just wondering, but what is Kisaki-san like when you talked to him?

Bunshinsaba
Dec 31, 2007, 11:06
I met Kisaki on a number of occasions, once backstage at 12012 and other times at in-store events. The first time (an in-store event) was back in 2001 when he was with Syndrome (Tatsuya on vocals).

The issue at hand was always the language barrier. He can't speak English and my Japanese is poor. When we met I did alot of the talking - questions mainly. We talked about my favourite Matina bands, band members. But what he probably wanted to ask and what I wanted to ask was hampered by the language barrier. As a result, we were like two babies sitting on the floor in our diapers trying to communicate. Single word questions, small phrases, chunks of langauge. We made out okay considering, but it's too bad one of us didn't speak the others language.

RE: Now I feel really left out... But I can understand the whole "being a guy thing." But even though, I would still treat them like they are humans, because that's exactly what they are.

They never treated me poorly. I think that they were just amused by my presence. I remember last year at a Phantasmagoria in-store event. It was all girls and ME!!! When the band came out and saw me, Riku whispered to Kisaki and they had a light laugh. So what. Hell, I would have done the same. I don't think they were laughing at me; they were laughing at the look of the situation. It was more like... "Poor guy. He wants to meet us but he is surrounded by a hundred schoolgirls."

What has really helped though is the Internet and the bands touring overseas. When I got into visual there was NOTHING about VK on the Net, even in Japan. Their websites were horrible - more like messageboards. But 8 years later, look at VK on the Web today!! And after bands began touring Europe and the USA I think they have realised finally... "Holy ****... boys like visual. And we actually have fans who are in their twenties, thirties."
That has helped me a bit. I don't look so odd.

Yeah, but like you said, I'd have to try harder to get their attention because I'm a 17-year-old girl. That's why I said I'd still treat them like humans, because that's what they are. What annoys me is those girls who don't give a crap about whether they want the artist happy or not. The artist is making music for them, not the other way around. Some people just need to learn to appreciate it more, like us.

And about the Phantasmagoria thing, you'd already met Kisaki more than once before, so it wasn't hard to recognize you. But I got to admit, when I imagined the scene in my head, I laughed a bit. The situation would have been strange. But then again, when you stand out like you do, it tends to sink in and you get used to it hunh?

We need to make a Kisaki thread if there isn't one already..........

RE: But then again, when you stand out like you do, it tends to sink in and you get used to it hunh?
Do you mean, I, personally get use to it, or the bands get use to it (it = me being around).

I have gotten use to it alright, but it doesn't make me feel any better. What really gets me is when the girl fans look at me as if I am strange. In my head I'm thinking... Look in a mirror, sweetie. You like visual kei, and in Japan, to the mass culture, that makes you something between an o-taku and hentai. And there you are giving me the "evils"; looking at ME like I'm weird. Talk about the pot calling the kettle black.

Shoganai ne!!:p

JRockAddict
Jan 12, 2008, 15:18
I know I look weird! And I'm d**n proud of it! But people do say I'm also pretty.

I wouldn't feel any better either. I'd just glare right back. All people are strange... Though, I'd probably dress in the Elegant Gothic Lolita/Aristocratic look more than visual kei... Doesn't mean I wouldn't wear it all the same! I totally would, but I'm more of an elegant person. I'm drawn to elegant things and/or people (Like Mana-sama for example! :) ).

Talk about the pot calling the kettle black... OMG, that's hilarious!! :D

"It" being the feeling, the standing out.

That sucks big time! They had grown to become one of my favorites. BUt I guess that explains the lack of new costumes recently and a total lack of new photo sets at their shows.

Bunshinsaba, are you going to their oneman? I'd been on the fence about it because I'm trying to save money, but after the news I had to get a ticket.

Well do not dispair too much. I went to the last live show (3 HOURS!!!!) and bootlegged some short clips with my digital camera. I plan to upload them to YouTube. . . which should take about a gazillion years with the slow upload/compression software on Youtube. Some clips are almost 5 minutes... please mind the ceilings and bad angles sometimes. I had to hold the camera to my chest to avoid getting caught and that made it difficult to see the camera screen sometimes. But some footage is excellent... though the Youtube compression is probably going to KILL the quality.

I will notify all on this thread when I upload them.

Bunshinsaba
Mar 4, 2008, 19:34
Well I am just uploading the last one now. So by the time you read this the four videos will be up on YouTube.
Just PLEASE keep in mind that it was hard to shoot this with a digital camera and keep the band in the frame. Sometimes the camera shows the ceiling... it was difficult because I didn't want the staff to see me.
Anyway... the sound is actually okay and the YouTube compression isn't that bad. I think the clips look amazing for a digital camera, and all Metis fans BEWARE.... if you watch these clips, you will cry that you couldn't attend this live!!
My YouTube name is GHOSTCINDERELLA, but if you search Metis Gretel it will come up.
PLease enjoy!!

Yes... it's me.
As for the Best of CD... yes, all the tracks are remastered versions. Personally I prefer the Devils Masquerade - Another Hell full album. But that is just me.

If you are interested, I have a KILLER signed Metis poster up on EBay - posted today.

Sui and Misery have joined forces with UnderCode for a new band - Megaromania. Their image will be similar to Metis in that they will have the "old school" pre-millennium VK look... at least that is what I have heard!!! Sounds great!!
