I'm reading Death Note at the moment, and in one part there's a kidnapped girl and the investigators are working on the case. One investigator says 警察に大きな動きがあったら殺すって

I'm a bit confused here because keisatsu is marked by ni, which usually indicates passive form, but the verb is in the normal form. So which translation would be more accurate:

They said that if the police make any big moves, they'd kill her. (normal form)
They said that there are any big moves by the polite, they'd kill her. (passive form)

I'm guessing the latter.:okashii:

Not really. A passive form verb is often accompanied by a に but a に is often used without a passive form verb.

ある doesn't have a passive form for the first thing. In/by the police (force)...I can't answer for sure without taking your word for it on "say" bit on the end....It could be a statement being given to the police as well. :relief:

I think you could interperet に here to be "in," "at," "by" or "among."

Both of your translations say practically the same thing.

Not forgetting "from", which would be my favourite in that sentence.
