We've just released version 3.0.1 of the Japanese Learning Suite! (Totally free!)
Unfortunately for some, it's only for Windows right now. (requires .NET framework 2.0) I know we've gotten a lot of requests for a Mac OS X port, but unfortunately neither of us have a Mac to work on. :(

There's a couple shots to show some of what it offers. :D
Here's some of the changes in the latest release:
v3.0.1
1/22/2007
==========
-Updated project from Visual Studio 7 to 8, so it now runs on .Net 2.0
-Added audio for kana charts
-Added Vocabulary forms (view, edit, quiz, create)
-Changed dictionary lookup form
-Changed 1/4 include option to 1/10 include option on all forms.
-Made JLPT Level 4 and 3 lists.
Basically, some of the things are audio for the Kana lists, so that when you mouse over a kana, it will say it and show the romaji for that kana.
Vocabulary forms, so you can learn new words and learn their verb tenses etc.
Changed the dictionary lookup form to be a bit more streamlined (you can still use the old one as well if you like.)
We also started adding JLPT word lists so that you can study for the JLPT!
There are other features in the menus that are greyed out for now that will be available in upcoming releases. It's a work in progress!
As always, it's totally free and available for download at

お疲れ様です
(I would have made the links and thumbnails work, but as a new user, I'm not allowed to add URLs yet. Sorry.)

I know what a pain that is so I've made them 'live'.

I also hate having to add useless text to the end of short messages. :relief:

ありがとう ポール。 :D
hopefully it's not too big of an issue with the large sized images.
I was going to use small images in the post and link them to the larger images... if you feel exceptionally motivated. ;) Might make it easier for people loading the page.

Those are the thumbnails that I was going to use to link to the full 1600x1140 png images.
Thanks again. (And now I see what you mean about "having to add useless text at the end of short messages". My first was just the kana thank you.) ;)

Just wait till you find about the 120 second enforced wait between postings.

Just wait till you find about the 120 second enforced wait between postings.
Were there some valid problems that required these kind of measures?
I would think that once a user had a sufficient amount of posts under their belt that they'd be trusted not to abuse the forums. :( At least enough to remove the short post and 2min wait restrictions etc.
What's the point of restricting short posts anyway? Trying to force people to be more verbose? What's the use if the extra content they type is just space filling noise?
I suppose I could go on some tirade now about how that seems counter to the Japanese philosophy of personal responsibility in relation to maintaining the harmony of the community etc... but I think that's just beating a dead horse at this point.
(Hopefully I've reached the minimum post length and can now send this message. *tongue in cheek joke*) ;)
Thanks again.

Difficult to say. The language portion of this forum is rather languishing, the culture bits (which I don't frequent) have had some nasty arguments in the past but I know whether mass multi-posting or speed was a big factor. Quite a few times I've dashed off a quick (but meaningful) reply and had to re-send after pauses until it gets through.

Maybe they do, but I haven't noticed it happen yet.

I've seen a 30 second delay before which I think would be sufficient. That generally allows time to read a post, think for a second and type even a short response. But it's enough to hamper anyone trying to flood.
As for the short replies, as you said, sometimes that's all that is required; a quick, concise response. :)

Version 3.0.3 and 3.0.4 have been released...
Scott is working on 3.0.5 with a bunch of new Kanji features.
Check them out. :D (there is a link to the changelog on the download page that summarizes the latest updates)

I'm going to download this as soon as I get home. Well... as soon as our Antivirus software is working... my mother won't let me download. :okashii:
This is what I get for working on the college computers. :relief:

I think minimum post limit is to stop small talk, such as 'Hi there, not seen you for ages. How are ya?', not really to make people more verbose...
I just hope I've written enough :p
