Konnichiwa Minna!!
In March, I am going to be moving to Japan for a year to teach English (wahoo!!). I have Golden Week off as a paid holiday and I wanted to take advantage of those days off to take a trip up to Tokyo (Im going to be living in Kakegawa). I have heard that Golden week is a tough time to travel in Japan since so many people have that time off and I was just was wondering if anyone had any advice on what Tokyo is like during Golden Week and if it is worth it to visit then.
Thanks!!!

In fact, visiting Tokyo during the Golden Week is usually a very good option: everything is open, unlike during the New Year holidays, and there are much less people in the town than usually - even the subways and trains look quite empty...

You're welcome. Sure you will enjoy it, I spent half of my GWs visiting Tokyo since I arrive in Japan. Be just aware than shinkansen are really packed at the begining and end of that week, so you might need to reserve a seat in advance. ..

My s/o and friend visited Japan in 04 during golden week, a year later I visited it during the same time.

It was a nice vacation, laid back, everything seemed to be open (except for a few stores which had the whole week off) but the major attractions were typically open.

Last time I went during x-mas and new years unfortunately many things I wanted to see or do were closed due to those holidays.

We took subways, taxi's and the bullet train during golden week, travel was not bad. New Years is the worst travel time as everyone goes back to their home town (usually heading away from Tokyo however.)
