Dear all mods/admins,
I have been using JREF for the last little while now, and the section I frequent the most is the Learning Japanese section. It's a great resource for learners to request assistance, and also a place for advanced learners to discuss their studies. Lately, it seems, however, when the same questions start to pop up frequently, the forum ceases to become an effective learning tool; rather, it is becoming more of question/answer site. On the internet, we have such resources already, such as Yahoo Answers, where people answer people's questions. I think JREF can be more than that, it can be a place where people actually discuss their strengths and weaknesses in the Japanese language. Here I would like to propose 2 changes to make the JREF Learning Japanese section more beneficial to all contributors:
1) Create different sections for Beginner, Intermediate (more than 1 year of learning, past the kana stage), Advanced (more than 3 years of learning), Expert/Native (Questions on Japanese language posted only in Japanese). This allows members of similar proficiency to practice and ask about their Japanese, and also allows members of a comparatively higher proficiency to assist those who are beginning to learn. Members wouldn't have to feel 'guilty' about making what they think would be a 'dumb' question under this format.
2) Create a Q/A on the several most popularly asked questions, such as "how long does it take to remember all the kanas", "what is the difference between wa & ga", "how do words like という、なんか、なんて work" etc. This thread would be a good reference for learners. On the other hand, others can focus their energy on discussing more specific questions on the language.
Thanks for reading this. Please do not hesitate to contact me at anytime.
