I thought the album was good as a whole. Much better than Love Letter, but I saw that album as more of a novelty than anything else. Anyone who has been trying to describe the direction of Gackt's musical style and quality will be very frustrated. As we can see from this album, it's not that he's getting more poppy or anything, but he's doing what every good musician should: surprising us with something new.

Some first impressions: The bg sounds and effects were maybe the best of any of Gackt's other albums. Correct me if I'm wrong, but since Ren has left the band for now and has been replaced, there is less emphasis on basswork. A shame, since Ren was a very good bassist who had some of the most intricate basslines I've heard in JRock. Finally, I guess Gackt has abandoned the lengthy end track pattern, although it still retains the sweeping orchestration and sweetness.

Some people in the past have commented on the "Westernization" (whatever that means) of Gackt's style. There are elements of Western influence in his music, but that's not really a bad thing. From the steel string semi-bluesy guitar melody and the percussion beats of Ash to the greater emphasis on power chords on the electric-guitar-driven songs, he still manages to incorporate his own musical signature.

The only weak spot was the Black Stone track, which is comparable to Kimi ga Oikaketa Yume and (shiver) Another World.

So, if you haven't heard this album yet, I strongly recommend it. Gackt is surely one of the most successful solo artists, and this album shows why.

Well, I only had 7 Gackt songs before I got this album, so I'm not in a position to compare things... :bluush: 4 out of those songs I liked, and 3 I didn't (or not particularly), so I really didn't know what to expect...

I like it! :cool: It's a bit more 'pop' than I usually like, so... it's not one I'd listen to all the time... because it still doesn't have enough 'edge' for me... but sure it is good music. The vocal lines are excellent; unusual, and catchy, so that's enough to make me like it. Personally, though, I'd like to have heard the bass line more! There doesn't seem anything outstanding in the way of bass, which is a shame. And I'd also have liked the occasional more raw sound, especially in the guitars, to balance out the smooth production.

'Misty' was pretty cool; I like the jazzy style, which is a bit different and the ending... interesting... I thought 'Farewell' really showed off the vocal. I don't know what Gackt's singing has been like on his other albums... I've heard negative comments about it in some places... but here I thought his voice sounded really good; it was clean and no trace of the 'shimmer' that annoys some people! The melody is lovely - it's evocative somehow; the chorus I found emotional and the drumming was nice without being overdone. I wasn't so keen on 'Noesis'; I don't really know why... It had a kind of Indian-type sound to it (I don't know how else to describe), maybe something to do with the intervals? There was an interesting break with the down slide, but I found the song too 'pop' and too long. 'Ash' was great, though - lovely picking at the start, good pace variations and spot-on accurate vocals. 'Metamorphoze' started off well for me; I like the intro which was kind of rocky but also had something like a flute (? I think?) and tasty background riff in verse 1, but somehow the song didn't hold my interest. I liked 'Dispar'; cool intro with a strong riff before the vocals, a catchy tune and an interesting vocal rhythm in places, too. 'Future'... I love the melody, but I didn't like the solo... it was very interesting (could I even say 'thought-provoking'?!) but not my taste. Guitar on this song was very nice but I'd like to have heard more bass and drums! 'Black Stone' I was prejudiced against already because I watched the PV and it reminded me uncannily of Busted! (Don't ask me why!) 'Storm'... again (like many on here!) good intro rhythm... there were interesting things going on behind the melody but I really feel it needed a good guitar break to lift it somehow. 'Roads' had a 'high-school pop' feeling about it (yeah, I'm tired, ok!) and didn't really appeal to me; the last one with the long title I'm too lazy to type out, had great composition and gorgeous piano behind the verses, although I feel it would have benefited from more sharpness.

Jeez, I can't half blather on, can't I! :bluush: Well, I only listened through once, so I haven't been able to go into it in detail... I use the word 'interesting' far too much... :sorry:

Also I'm a dyed-in-the-wool traditionalist really when it comes to music. Guitar, guitar, guitar! Need I say more?!

I loved how the intro flowed into Farewell, going from a soft tune into the slightly more heavy one. I love Farewell, the chorus especially, (edit: because all of Gaku's choruses pwn) :lol: I liked that techno-voice approach in Noesis, its something kewl and new that he hasn't done before. Metamorphoze has like the catchiest chorus ever, I've been singing it like 24/7 for like the past month :D He had a few slow songs, like always, which were OK... I'm mostly a fan of this fast, upbeat, "Vanilla" type songs :evil: Black Stone is a really good song, yes its somewhat like Another World, however, its not quite as "annoying?" iono how else to put it... Anyways, during the chorus, his voice is incredible as always :love: Storm is definately the pop-iest song... but good none the less, hes experimenting, and its all guud :p Road was also a cute song, I loved the tune, very happy and catchy, only when he started singing in the beginning, it was slightly weird, and sounded off, but I got used to it :relief: Anyways, I think its a great album, I think I might buy it sometime in the future!

I was wondering about the shimmering part, too. And I agree with both, his voice is definately strong and I can't find any faults with it that one can reasonably argue about. It's definately distinct in being a tad deep and slightly husky (probably not the right word) in tone, but that's not a bad thing.

Storm is definately the pop-iest song... but good none the less, hes experimenting, and its all guud :p

I've been a bit curious about how you and Kinsao have used pop. I have nothing against it exactly, but I was just wondering in what way are some of the songs you described pop? I ask only because I recall him saying he wanted this album to be more on the rock side. I know his albums always have a variety of songs, but these descriptions just stood out in particular.



Anyway, I've already got it ordered. Can't wait until it comes in. I strongly encourage people to buy it (Kind of counterintuitive to download w/out buying while at the same time asking Japanese artists to tour in their country!).

Yeah, it was late, I was tired and lazy... lol. I guess to me, I would describe something as more "pop" (as opposed to "rock") if it has a somehow smoother feel to it - a less harsh and obvious guitar sound, but a more 'produced' feeling. I also associate twiddly and indulgent guitar solos with rock (a real weakness of mine!); obviously, rock doesn't always have to have guitar solos and sure I don't usually find a piece good if the guitar/bass is too strong and overwhelms the vocals. And of course, 'rock' songs can be as catchy and singable as 'pop' songs... I don't really know how to define it except that to me, 'pop' has a slightly more mellow feeling.

Aww yeah... I don't like to feel that I'm ripping the artists off by downloading. :worried: I don't mind so much with it being Gackt as he's well-known and proportionally well-off already :blush: but I don't like to do it for indies or obscure bands at all.

I have to say, I enjoyed this album much more than his previous ones (excluding some singles). I personally think that his voice has definately improved, not to mention his musical inclination. Compared to his previous albums (say, Moonchild and Mars), Diabolos sure have an edgier feel to it. Won't be talking much now, need to transfer the songs to my MP3 player. xD

Hm... About that wavering bit, do you guys think it's vibrato, or am I thinking about something else? I know when I listen to Kiyoharu's voice (ex. Kuroyume, ex. SADS) that it quivers more than anything else, but does not sound exactly like vibrato as I normally know it. Well, I'm obviously not much of a music person to start with.

Anyway, I agree, I don't think there's anything much intrinsically wrong with Gackt's vocal technique.

I was going to read all the posts but... there are 20 pages x__X... anyway... reading the last page... I have to say that the last album, in my opinion, is the best! :cool: it says very much of his style, jrock. I like very much the "Black Stone" song... and the last single, "Redemption" :music: I looove that song! (and I like it more, after listening it in the Dirge of Cerberus opening... btw I heard the he "appears" as a secret character! O__o is that true?).
Oh, and I like very much the hair style that he has now... I think dark hair colors suits him best, what do you think?
And... oh, yes, recently I´ve seen a video called "dressing Gackt" and is so hilarious... it´s a part of the "the sixth day and seventh night" concert and is a group of videos with Gackt wearing diferent cosplays! :lol:

I haven't heard all of Diabolos yet. Burned a CD and it DIDN'T WORK. x_x But the newer songs, like Redemption and Black Stone, I utterly dislike. If all of Diabolos is going to be like that, then I'll be really sad. It seems like he's just churning out poprock hits. There isn't anything like the Freesia opuses anymore. If there has to be a best album, it'd be Mars for sure. I do love Rebirth for Secret Garden and Seki Ray though.

I have a question. I was watching that show in which Gackt appears with... I don't know who and they go out together to do "normal" stuff. They go out walking down through a street when they get a crepe and get follow by 500 girls.. later on they go to a fishing pond where Gackt catches 2 fish (makes me imagine there was a man placing them) and later that day they go to a drinking party, just the two of them, where Gackt manages to get the other guy drunk and play Jenga. The question is: During this drinking party they eat something called "blue cheese". WHAt's that??
Oh, and what the heck is that of S class person and M class person and else???

Yeah, I heard about him around the same time, but I fist heard him when he was Malice Mizer vocalist (how old!!!) I thought that music was awsome and I fell in love with him because of his voice and piano playing (you know, regret, and if you haven't heard that one.. you don't know what you're missing). Later on, Like months later, i found out MM had already disbanded and that Gackt had a solo career, I had already heard Mizerable and Illnes Illusion, but those two sounded soooo Malice!! :p
After that I kept on hearing random songs until.. Moon album, I think. Till finally I could built his discography. Honestly, i have only one original: Diabolos, but I hope that (now that I'm 21 and a job) I can buy everything new.
My favs are... Illness Illusion, Pappa lapped, Lu:na, Crescent album, Love letter album and Diabolos. Tho I'm not really liking the new nasal voice he's managing... except in Redemption.

I have heard Gackt playing piano, but personally, (without ofense to MM fans) i like a lot more Gackt as a solo, i have heard too, songs of MM and i like some, but i guess i fell in love with Gackt as he is right now, as he sings right now... i think everybody has its oppinion, and mine is that one, but still think that him had always singed well... as for his voice, i think he's like triying new vocalizing styles, new sound effects, in Diabolos he sounds kinda different but is for that... eitherway, i haven't seen moonchild because im too young to buy for internet, if i could buy it, im sure my dad and my mom will say no (they don't understand why i listen to this music) and here in my country theres nowhere to buy original albums o movies from Japan :(

Probably he will retire in 2007, not that i want him too but... He is not so young anymore (even if he does look younger on the pictures) and it takes him more energy to do what he does. Hummm, I don't think that Gackt faints after every show... I know that he did at least one time, and live shows are always demanding, but I don't think there's actually any concrete evidence that it always happens - this is just my opinion but I think it gets blown up out of proportion by some fans, because they are concerned about him of course, but really it is only a hearsay. :relief:

Also, Gackt seems to be the kind of person who takes quite good care of his health, and if he doesn't have his health he can't continue to work, so I think he would be more careful than to allow that to happen often. :hey:

MM.-.. I think he does take care of his health, but, as i said before, he's just overworked and then, it doesn't matter what you do, if you don't take a break you'll crash down. Bruce Lee, we could mention. I just hope he's alright. My world can't be the same if he goes away just like that. Well I didnt heard Gackt since he was in Malice Mizer, but I have heard many MM songs, and I think they really rock hehe.

Gackt was one of the first J-Rockers I met, and I really like most of his songs, my favourite ones are Emu-for my dear-, love letter, kimi ni aitakute, last song, and well I wont finish if i metion all of them.

Unfortunatley I only own one single album Diabolos and it was so f*** expenssive, but I think it was one of the best buys Ive ever made, I like that album very much, I cant chose my favourite sing since I enjoy all of them.

I've seen that video where Gackto San is fainting, but I agree with Lady Blue, he works really really hard, and sometimes his body cant resist so much work and stress, but I DO think he takes care of his health, if not I dont think he would be able to work THAT hard!!

Yeah is true de human body can resist a lot of hard work, but it is also true that it is a whole machine, and if something goes wrong such as an unbalanced feeding, lack of sleep and stress, sooner or later your body wont resist, because your inmunology system will decrease and you will get sick. And this is very difficult because a simple flu may become a serious disease; because your antibodies wont be as strong as they should be and wont be able to fight againts the antigens.

That's why I think, eventhough Gackto San works harder than he should he MUST take care of his health.

You know, JoruDenna? I was going to buy Diabolos in Monterrey, cos a friend told me he saw it there, but that I should save some money. I asked why and he answered me: Cos it costs almost 500. So.. hell no!! How am I going to spend 500 pesos on that?? I decided to risk and got it on the web for 28 dlls, shipping includded. That's more acceptable. And I received it in 4 weeks from Japan!! i was astonished. Now I really like this page, and I'm just waiting for a new full album from Gackt to preorder!!:cute:

Anyway, back to gackt. I think there are very few jrockers on scene that could do what Gackt does. Those musicians are big in their carreers and on life, and you can tell. Let's be real, Gackt is not like "handsome", (God bless the man the invented Photoshop), but what he is inside is what comes out from every pore. This goes far down than plastic surgery, make up and illumination, he IS beautiful and that's why we love him. Of course, he's human and makes dumb things every once in awhile, but that just makes him human AND cute!! :blush: :blush: :blush:

Anyways, well you dont have to thank us for replying, is a pleasure to talk abpout Gackt, at least for me it is since, like I said before, he was one of the first Jrockers I met. I'm more into harder music, like Gazette or D'espairs Ray, but I have to admit that Gackt San won my heart since the first time I listened to him, I know many ppl might say he's Jrock, but he's not THAT rock, still being kinda pop doesnt mean he's plastic or anything, he's great, his songs are beautiful, I can cry or feel nostalgic with every different song. Is awsome the way he manages to transmit different feelings and emotions through each song, his body language, everything seems so perfect. :blush:

I had an impression that Gackt looked after his health because I read in his autobiog how he did training and stuff (for fighting) so it seemed like he took care of his health for that. But maybe I got a wrong impression. In any case, he should definitely take care of himself. :)

Yeah, im really not into latin music (even living in latinamerica) but i guess that if Gackt sings something that i don't like, then i'll love it!! not because is Gackt, but because him makes every kind of music sound good ne?

Redemption keeps along with the sound of Diabolos, very rockish and stylish on his video, and Longing as well, but this one has a bit of the videogame style, specially in that part with the organ and people screaming... I guess he wanted to keep the motion of the Dirge. They're both very good, actually.

I'm doing some research...and I can't seem to find any concrete stuff about his Moon Project. Lots of places mention it, but neglect to explain it. These are the things I've found out:

Moon (album), Moon Child (movie), Moon Child: Requiem (novel), and Crescent (album) all make up a "chapter" of the Moon Project story. Black Stone (single) and Diabolos (album) supposedly start a prequel to the first group, and this chapter is supposed to end around 2008.

In the now defunct JRock Ink magazine (now Purple SKY), it's also mentioned that there's six singles, three tours, and a bunch of interviews and photobooks included in the first chapter (meaning the chapter started with the Moon album), but I couldn't manage to find any information about those things that linked them to the project.

There's also a book documenting his Moon Project, but the only link I could find to it was for Amazon.co.jp, so I have no idea exactly what it has in it (haven't learned japanese yet :p).

But...there you go. Whether or not there's going to be more to the story after this is beyond me. I had to go through three different sources just to put that much together. Hope that helps everyone's curiosity along a bit.

A three-hour line formed for the 2000 capacity hall. The moon project is nothing consistent. It is composed exactly by that: the albums, the concerts, photo albums and else. Mmm.. I'm afraid you must have the originals so you can start to connect them, cos the notes he writes and the pictures in them are part of the story. Also have to pay attention to the lyrics, cos they're suppoused to tell the story like a novel and the music is an important part of it, like in a movie (an american movie, at least).

About Yoshiki-sama and Gackt, i have understood it's only a project, not a firmly declared band. Anyways, its cool!!!

though i love GacktJOB more than alot of things, and You makes megiggle, i think Yoshiki will want it to be more about the music and not loyality. Gackt and his buddies also have their own sound, style, andwhat nots. if they kept them it would just be GacktJOB plus Yoshiki. which would still rock, but wouldnt be the new band that i think Yo-chan wants. so yeah.

and like i've said, Yosh is amazing and thus will pick amazing people to play. and ill be too busy fainting because gackt and yoshiki are on teh same stage at teh same time singing the same song to really care about the other guys. unless i love them. which i will, which will cause my death, because i wont be able to take the awesome power of such things.

Nah, dunno, He helps me relax and sleep. I'm not saying he's boring, not at all. I burned two cd's, of them with ballads only and another with rock, the ballads help me sleep, (and by the third song I'm already dreaming) and the rock albums takes me out of bed, real quickly actually. Vanilla and Pappa Lapped have that effect.
