I was checking with an on-line ticket company and they have r.t. airfare from Los Angeles (LAX) to Narita for $485.00. But, when the taxes and fees are added, the price goes up to $741.00. That's a $256.00 increase. Has taxes and fees on airfares gone up? It seemed cheaper.

The fuel surcharge skyrocketed last year. I took two flights out of Japan last year and got hammered with 20,000+ yen of taxes and surcharges each time. It makes me nostalgic for the good old days when the listed ticket price was basically what you paid.

Same here.

I checked around and the surcharges seem to be in the $270 range.

I got some tickets to Australia, quotes all were 30,000~40,000 above advertised prices.

Well, I settled on the first place I checked. I got my round-trip tickets for $495 plus the $270 tax. It was still $300 cheaper than Priceline.com and Travelocity. The place I got it (found it from an ad in the Los Angeles Times) from is GatewayLAX.com. Good service! I'd use them again. I'll be flying on Korea Air (they wouldn't be my normal first choice, but I couldn't beat the price).

I was looking at the airfare from JFK or EWR to NRT and KIX today. For some mid week flights in March and April, the round trip fare is around $1000 or so.
Interesting, if I get the quote for one way trip (JFK or EWR to NRT or KIX), the air fare is $1600 to $2000 for the same departure date!!!!!! Even if I am going only one way, I think I would buy the round trip ticket because it is cheaper. The pricing is very strange; no wonder the airlines are in such a financial mess.
