Since you're from California as I am, for a 7-day trip figure it this way:

R.T. airfare $700-$1,000 (shop around)
$250 for JR Railpass (if you plan to go around Japan outside of Tokyo, if not, you won't need it)
$60/night lodging (ryokans; but you can find business hotels for around \5,000-\5,500/night)
$15-$20/day for food
$100 for transport (taxis, trains and subways)
Whatever you want to spend on souvenirs/gifts

I'm thinking of going to Europe some day, how much do you think it'll cost me?

All stabs in the dark aside, this is completely dependant upon what you what want to do, how you want to travel, how long you're staying, and what kind of accomodations you prefer. But since we're just throwing figures out there. Budget for at least $1,000 for total transportation costs, and another $1,000-2,000 for everything else.

1. How much did you make last year?

2. Send it in to your airline. :-p

With the current taxes and fees, it goes up to $700-$1,000.

Can someone tell me if there is a cheap discount "one-way" ticket sold at some travel sites. I can get a round trip ticket from EWR to KIX and back for $1000. But, if I search the pricing for a one way ticket (EWR to KIX), it is well over $2000. I think those web sites are listing the full fair. Even though I don't need the round trip ticket, I think I may need to buy it anyway because it is simply cheaper than buying a one way ticket.

Try GatewayLAX.com. They may have one-way fares. They were the cheapest I found lately for round-trip tickets.

I just went for a round trip for a $1000 even though I am not going to use it for the return. I think the round trip ticket will get TSA off your back so that they don't pick you for frisking at the security point at the airport.

the amount you need to save varies on how long your trip is. how long are you planning to stay?

This is such a ridiculous question. How can we guess what you are going to buy, and how much of it??? You obviously don't need to pay a rent, which means you only will spend for food, local transportation and shopping. Since we don't know what you intend to eat, and definitively have no idea what you want to buy, obviously no one can answer this.

Well, local transportations are cheap, so this is not something you need to worry about.

We also don't know what side trips you may go on.

Figure on average 8000 - 10,000 yen/day, including cheap housing and with a Japan Rail Pass in hand.

Local transportation could run you 20,000 yen/month. Is that cheap?

one way tickets can cost more then round trip.
Also if you do not have a return ticket home they will not let you into the country.

Best bet is to try Jtbusa.com if your a student you can get some really nice air fair. around 400 to 600 dollars.

I fly on benefits so it only cost me 400 for business class round trip.

The most expensive thing about Tokyo is where your gona stay.

My current rent is 160k Yen a month in Takanawa =P

your trips gona depend where you stay, how long, when you go, which airline and agency and what you want to do.

I notice nobody mentioned a drink, now it might be my one track mind buuuuuut... If you like a drink (i.e alcohol) then its pretty expensive. I do reccomend Pub Hub as well its actually a decent draught pint. Prices can vary but are generally not cheap, I remember paying about £5 ($10) a bottle of corona.
