Alexa.com collects internet traffics of web sites, and the posted image is the summary statistics of forum viewers of Jref. If you would like to see more details, please refer to Alexa Traffics of JREF.com (http://www.alexa.com/data/details/traffic_details?url=www.jref.com).
US, China, and Japan are the three biggest sources. This is a very interesting result, as Euro areas do not count much. The site is not popular in korea, although there are many korean forumers who frequently post. Chinese speaking countries, Singapore(4.3%), Hong Kong(2.9%), China (5.8%), represent 13% of forum traffics. Japan(12.8%) is the second to US(14.8%). US views appear to be most reflected in this forum, and keep this site active and going.
Scandinvian countries' traffics, Finland(4.9%) and Sweden(4.2%), do seem to be massive given their small population, and geographic/political disconnection with japan. I don't know why this is happening, but somebody here can explain.
For your information, alexa.com is an independent source of internet traffics, and there are many other ways to monitor, and sample internet traffics.

I am thinking that this site is linked to more Scandinavian web sites, or has popular rating in community portals.
More surprises that communist china allows their citizens to access the japan related forum though.

That's very interesting!
I wonder what happened at the beginning of 2006 that made Jref jump in popularity so abruptly...

Well I think A lot of the american traffic may be by the crazed anime kids. Which alright in it's own right.
I just got to Japan and I will be here for awhile and figured this would be a good source to find things to do in japan. :)

Here is a complete list, as requested.
http://i126.photobucket.com/albums/p104/kinnchii/jrefsitestat.jpg
There is a slight change in traffics since the time I checked. US traffic is decreasing, while all the rest remains same. This effectively raises combined traffics of chinese speaking nations to the top of the list (13.7%) by ethnicity/culture/language wise classification. I'd need to amend my previous statements on Europe. Europe as a single group outnumbers any other groups as language-independent-culture-wise classification.

I don't know why this is happening, but somebody here can explain. That's because I would gather that the majority of these people are 14 year old j-rock fangirls posting thousands upon thousands of single line, unpunctuated, alternating case paeans to some hitherto unknown air-guitaring transvestite or other.
This is by no means meant to offend the Scandinavians who aren't rabid fangirls, but if you look at the flags, they are quite well represented in the J-Rock, or... uh, Japanese Music forums...

This is a link for more detailed summary statistics of member residences and usage of JREF compiled by Maciamo in 2005. Wonder what could be causing so much variance in country of origin between the two analyses ? The difficulty some people have getting their flags and profiles in line perhaps. :okashii:
One factor that may explain the disproportionate impact of smaller countries Finland, Sweden is their English ability. Along with Belgians & the Dutch, these tend to be areas with some really excellant speakers. Singapore & Malaysia I believe it is one of the official languages. :relief:

Like, I have not seen many Brazilian or Peruvian flags on JREF, these countries have a big Japanese influence, but I think the English capacity doesn't let them have a say in this forum.

It sounds as though you did not want to offend anyone with a possible exclusion of J-rock fans. Your analysis may be rightly formulated but your manner to present your ideas appeared discourteous... uh, I am still waiting for the comment on other well represented nations. for instance, China, Japan, and US.

I had a look at Maciamo's study, which I think just as amazing as his other brilliant threads in JREF. Yes, flags and profiles might not in line, and I think another contributing factor is a sampling period. As you might have noticed, the two traffic rankings I attached thus far aren't exactly the same. The rankings are updated daily so there would be even greater variances between alexa traffic and those of Maciamo's samples.
I would like to give you better ways to see rather more permanent pictures than just a single day traffic summary. Then, what I'd do is to give at least 8-10 screen shots of alexa.com, which you can verify by going to alexa.com web site. That way, you can see the more permanent traffic structures stripped of temporary trends.
This is the number third sample collected on May 1st 2007.

But, you need to bear in mind that while most of the users might be*in* Japan, they aren't necessarily Japanese! :-)
From reading some of the other threads, there seems to be a hell of a lot of young j-rock / j-pop fans on this forum (or is it just that they have more time on their hands to post!?). Not saying there is anything wrong with this fact, just compared to other forums I've been on it is a lot more.
I'm quite unimpressed that Ireland isn't even listed and is relegated to the "other countries" at the bottom of the list! :(

It seems clear truth that you are somewhat rude person, but I am not sure about truth you sided with.
Anyway, thanks for interest in this topic, and I hope you will like those "rabid J-Rock fan girls", who probably doesn't like you either.

Doesnt Alexa only collect info from browsers that have the alexa toolbar installed? So it only counts those who visit and have alexa toolbar.
It probably says more about Alexa users than about proportional visits from various countries to this site.
Unsuprisingly the majority are from USA where Alexa is used the most.
Most website traffic counters show worldwide visitors by the IP of a viewer, i think that would be far more accurate.

I agree. Still alexa is a viable source, and I already mentioned that alexa is an "independent", third party web traffic counter.

Website traffic counters can be extracted only if you are admin of the board. Plus, identifying users by means of source IPs will be a hard task, which is probably why Maciamo didn't do.

It's been a year past since I last sampled the popularity (traffics) of the respective countries.
Interestingly, Germany is off the hook of one of the top scorers following Japan and United States! and China and other sinic nations decreased so much! Chinese popularity (including Taiwan, Singapore, HongKong) used to have 10-15% of the traffics of All Jref Traffics, and now only 5%, what happened to them?
Im Swedish myself and I know that Japan is a very popular country and that there is a general interest in japanese culture and people in Sweden. Plus the fact that most Swedish people are comfortable and able enough in English to be rather well representated in many english speaking forums, despite being few in numbers as a people (just around 8 milions of us in the world).
Later years South korea has also become popular in Sweden, but not even close to Japan yet.

10. China
11. Germany
12. Netherlands

JREF Top 15 2008 (so far)

Alexa is not reliable and/or accurate at all, shows just trends at best.
How does it work with the .eu? Several countries in EU has their own ending like .se but it changes alot as I understand. .eu doesnt really have any country connection its more about the company behind. One year .eu may grow due to a ISP starts using it or get bought up by antoher company using it. :bluush::D

Pretty much the same here in Finland.
Japan has been really in for some time and there is even a certain teen subculture that has mainly formed around j-pop, anime, and weird clothes.
I'm not sure how much of their image of Japan is based on actual facts. I have read and heard some pretty wild ideas that don't really meet with certain cultural aspects characteristic of Japan but who knows..
Anyway. I would guess they'd be one major group of Finns who visit Japan related sites.
Also the same about the linguistic skills holds true here. Education of the language is good and it's began at a quite young age. Also there is often very little material in many subjects in Finnish so people are quite accustomed to finding what they want in English.
This list is kind of biased; it doesn't take into account the differing populations of the countries.

Yeah!
Japan: 127-128 million people
Finland: About 5 million
:D
But in the end. It is "percentage of members by country".
I don't really see any way to take the population of the country to account.
It would be nice to see some statistics of how many percent (perhaps a smaller unit would do too..) of a country's population are JREFers.
It might be biased too though.. >.<
