There must definitely be strip clubs in JP since one appeared on the movie Lost in Translation! Yeah, again, you might google it.

Love hotels are nice as well :p but more on that in this (http://www.jref.com/forum/showthread.php?t=21371&highlight=love+hotel) thread.
I have a nice collection of cards advertising strip clubs in Rappongi and all I did was walk down the main road!! There again walk round Shinjuku and listen for the cheesy music and look for the pink and white curtains dangling, blocking view into the place, then there you have another. Just walk off the main roads in Shinjuku and theres tons and tons of "Gentlemens Clubs"... and if that doesnt satisfy your appetite, Rappongi at night is prostitute central :-)

I remember my Navy buddy taking me to a "strip" show. It turned out to be two young ladies doing unspeakable things with their neather regions and topped off with them doing unspeakable things to each other. I think that was the day my hair turned white prematurely! Thank God there were no animals involved on the stage.

That was a former dress shop converted into a strip club set.
The thing about strip clubs in Japan, a girl will plop herself next to you and start conversing and will get you to buy her drinks and bug the heck out of you to go for some private lap dances. Those will cost anywhere between 5,000 yen to 10,000 yen per dance.
One club has a separate room where the girl will give you "the works" consisting of lap dances (don't know how many) but the catch is buying a bottle of champagne. Think $1,000!
Worth it? You be the judge.

Back in the old days in Olongapo, such shows were euphemistically called "floor shows". They always drew big crowds of sailors & Marines. From what you said, I suspect that at the show you saw (only one, Uncle Frank?!) the entertainer picked up a stack of coins with her, umm, well, ...
I remember the night some of us encountered a group of Thai sailors who wanted to see a "floor show". That was the only time anyone (and I do not mean the entertainer) made an overt pass at me.

Hey Marsans!
About half an hour back I returned to my hotel from a place called Kabukicho which is near Shinjuku - and the first thing I did was Thank my stars that it wasnt my worst day - and the second thing I did was look for posts to which I can reply to, with my side of the story coz I did the stupidest thing I could have.
I understand that you havent been to a strip club and I assume you donot belong to the school of hard knocks - if I'm right well then pls read this.
Almost all big cities have sleaze towns and in Asia I could say after Bangkok, Tokyo could come a close second in terms of openness to sleaze - this is to such the extent that the women are quite cool about it. Tokyo is quite an eye opener to me in this terms.
I'm currently on a biz trip to Tokyo returning tomorrow. And I must admit that the Jap girls are pretty, petite, fashionable, mostly sophisticated, polite and cute.
At the end of the day I ended up at Shinjuku on my own - this is a jungle of neon signs, eating places, gaming, shops and sleaze clubs - the later it gets the latter takes over and the alleys and back alleys are dotted with men in suits - agents soliciting/pimping for shows and girls - I was initially looking for a pub for a couple of beers and then the devil got better of me such that I started talking to these guys.
First was a Japanese guys trying to convince me to check out his deal.
Pay Y4000 for freeflow of any drink for 90mins, watching a strip show and accompanied by a Jap girl. That will get you. But the trick is that the drink could be their choice of some unknown/shady local brand and that you have to buy drinks for the girl @ Y2500 each. Add to it the unknown service taxes @ 20% (I think). So you could end up paying atleast Y20000 at the end.
I knew about this to some extent and bargained hard for Y8000 for all - ofcourse they wont agree and I walked out. He showed me another place with another deal but eventually they'll rip you off. So I left again.
Finally my stupid self fell to the deal from a south asian guy who told me that @Y9000 you get a Jap girl and free flow of a choice drink for myself and the girl. Soon an Afro guy (foreigner from an African country) took over and led me to an upstairs place. Before walking in I checked the deal again except for the drink for the Jap girl. They collected the money before I stepped in - the place was empty except for a white guy and a Jap guy - the white guy was conked off - that stirred my defences - anyways I settled in and this Afro bartender-cum-bouncer-cum-pimp brought me supposedly "vodka" which I asked him to change to beer (I'll tell you the reason later) - and the girl sat next to me talking decent English (I seriously doubt she was Japanese) - soon she asked for her drink and guess what, it was at Y4000. I jumped! I was cursing myself and thinking how to get out this **** before I end up shedding Y30,000. The senses got better of me and I asked the girl to return to her seat. Instead of bargaining again and getting roughed up I finished my drink, put on my jacket and decided to forget the Y9000 and head back to the hotel. Before I could leave this Bartender started getting pissed off and tried hard to ask me to stay back - he didnt expect this move (coz most of their money comes from the girl's drink). He was definitely bigger than me and could beat the **** out of me - even tho there were his chummies at a call away. Wimp or not, I wouldnt risk that on a Biz trip. I sweet talked him as if he is my long lost friend - had another glass of beer. Eventually he gave up and I left. Immediately after stepping out there was another bulky Afro guy waiting to escort me on the elevator. I started getting nevous and I excused myself and took the stairs. When I reached downstairs there was a gang of atleast 6 to 8 Afro guys all waiting downstairs for me - 2 or 3 of them took turns to urge me to return without letting me step out - I started praying and using all my vocabularies to be nice to them. It continued for over 10mins and it seemed like hours.
To cut it short eventually they gave up and I hurried to a waiting taxi.
I am not used to this stuff and I swear I will not make the same mistake.
Lessons sorely learnt:
1. If you are not a hard-knock donot try to check out sleaze town alone - atleast a group of 3 chums is good for any unexpected circustances.
Remember you are walking into the wolves den (thats about Asia).
2. If you are alone or in two, its always better to go to a decent pick-up joint and chat up some girl who wants to have fun.
A popular disco in Asian cities is the right place.
3. If you cant chat up then there are escort services with upmarket girls to come to your hotel room and do whatever you please - including strip show.
You may pay a little more (than getting ripped off) but the girls are much better and you dont have to walk into the wolves den.
4. Inspite of this if you want to check out go with a smart local who has been out.
Almost all Japanese men enjoy this lifestyle - so it wont be difficult to find.
5. And finally even if you still end up in my situation donot let them mix the drink somewhere else and offer to you - there is a high probability they may mix a drug to conk you off and when you wake up they will charge a bomb for the hours you were senseless.
Many places offer to bring the sealed bottle to your table.
6. I'm not a racist and I'm not white but in Tokyo you should avoid the Afros in the sleaze town.
The Japanese have a strong code of conduct and sense of ethics and they usually would not trick you even at sleaze.
7. Finally if you may spread these words to those in your situation.
Apologies for such a long post - its just that karma has bit me in the arse and I'm still licking my wounds ;o]
Have a great time in Tokyo!!!

Luckily he got out without having to resort to force. I have to think brandishing a gun would have only led to trouble as a foreigner in Kabuki-cho probably doesn't have all that much credibility in the eyes of the police should something happen.
I DO agree with japologist's suggestion that you not venture into an area like Kabuki-cho by yourself. I went to a hostess bar (for research purposes of course!) with a buddy of mine and we were confident we could take out the recruiter that stood between us and the door had something felt off. Fortunately, we straightened the whole thing out ahead of time in both Japanese and English and actually had a good enough time that I tipped the recruiter when we left. Unfortunately, he recognized me 3 months later as I walked to a bar with some female friends...that was pretty embarassing.
Sleazy areas are definitely to be found, so just use common sense.

Hey, jest or not, there are times when it seems like a weapon might come in handy. In LA and America in general, I'm just more cautious about the situations I put myself in, and I think I let myself get carried when studying abroad. Nothing quite like the combination of testosterone and alcohol to get you in trouble! :box:

Japologist just proved what the best self defence weapon we have is - a quick wit and calm nerves. A weapon, more so in a 1v8 situation would have been instant provocation in a situation that really wasn't violent to start with.

Yes, 9 out of 10 times this is the case.
Getting back on topic, the clubs in Roppongi have the same Afro-type people out on the sidewalks trying to draw people into their clubs (most with Jamaican accents).
The first time I went to one was during our Japan tour in 2004 and a group of us went one night. I was surprised at the, uh, liberties that the girls allow the customers to take with them. You don't even have to be blind to try out your "braille" techniques on them. Some clubs, I've heard, even encourage this and picture-taking.

This is a little different from the topic but I was wondering if anyone could help.
I've always been interested to check out clubs in Japan where the waitresses wear gas masks and serve you, or something along those lines. Maybe a chance to talk with a gas masked hostess or something like that. I sort of figured that these places do exist after watching an episode of Lain last time.
Fact or fiction?
Anyway is shinjuku and roppongi the center of strip clubs? I walked around akihabara and noticed it's so different from years ago.. the amount of adult videos there is staggering now!

Yes and not really, its no different to 5 years ago - the same shops are in the same places, maybe it just seems that way?

stay the hell away from the roppongi clubs, especially the african owned ones. Big time scammers.
Was in roppongi on my first night over there looking for a few bars like MOtown (honest guv) but they where all dead. Finally relented and followed some nigerian guy into his club because he had been very helpful helping me find motown. Two things worked against me, i was stupidly drunk and hadn't quite got my head round the exchange rate. Anyways at the end of the night the ****** tried to charge me well over double of what I had spent. It took an hours arguing before they finaly came down to anything near a reasonable figure.
Besides most of the girls are eastern european and I guess not what your friend is after.
Looking back you gotta laugh, '25 quid for a bottle of champagne? shure order another one luv', when in reality it was 250 a bottle

You can't really tell if a club is "African-owned" by the guy on the sidewalk. They're just hired help.
My first time in Roppongi was in '04 and several of us planned to go to Tantra (my roommate during our tour was there the night before). Well, the usual Afro-Jamaicans were out on the sidewalks trying to intice people into their clubs. One was so persistent, a couple of us decided to take a look. The place was staffed by Eastern European girls and not an Asian in sight.
I just told the guy, "As I am in Japan, I would prefer to see Japanese girls. Coming to this club is like going to a Chinese restaurant for spaghetti." He got the point.

the touts you see on the streets tend to be either the owners or close employees. According to wikipedia some african owners actually post japanese to act as managers as locals would refuse to patronise an african owned club.
Believe me, getting into such a sticky situation opened my eyes to how much that area is run by african organised crime.
lol about the spaghetti in a chinese retaurant line

i was taken from one club to another because the twits couldn't put my card through after we finally reached some middle ground on the price. I was playing with the idea of jumping him breifly till we got out on the street. Every few yards was an african tout from another club and seeing him with me in tow they quickly checked me over and asked the guy if he was cool or OK, he nodded and the touts quickly checked me out once more then went about their business.

Better still stick to the clubs.
The next night I decided to stick to Shibuya and had a brilliant night in Womb.
Japanese clubbing is the best Ive experienced, a receptive and fun loving crowd, out to have fun nd not get totally destroyed like they do over here.
I felt love in there all the pills in the world couldn't generate.
