A short trip from Nagoya by local train is the castle in Inuyama. The castle in Nagoya is a disappointment. Air conditioning, elevators? - destroyed in WWII so it was rebuilt with all the modern amenities. Inuyama Castle is smaller, but it's simply been maintained.

Broiled eel is a specialty of Nagoya. I went to a great place in the JR station (13th or so floor). A pretty good kaiten sushi place on the same floor.

Nagoya is different from some of the other big cities, but there are fewer cultural things to do there.

If you visit Japan in summer,Please try to eat a river fish of Japanese summer.
Try to go to Gifu from Nagoya.
Ayu (ayu) is captured by Ukai (Ugai) and the Yana fishing in Nagara-
gawa River that flows to Gifu.

If you are into cars then you may want to have a look at the Toyota Palza in Nagoya. I've not been, but apparently they have lots of vehicles on display. A mate of mine who's car crazy wants to go.

Also don't forget that you are close to the Japan Alps, so could consider some day trips north and north east of the city to see some fantastic scenery and old style towns.
