I recommend Nightmare, and some people from the PS Company, such as Alice Nine, Girugamesh (for singing), Miyavi, Kra and maybe Vidoll. An Cafe is also good, but some of the songs aren't as good as their best ones. GOOD LUCK! J-rock is very addicting :P
Edit: An Cafe has turned into something else, so I recommend their earlier works, since I do not know what its going to turn into, since Bou left. They just added a keyboard person, so its probably going to sound different. Also, Serial Number (VANumber) is a nice group

my favorite bands are:
Dir en grey (my absolute favorite)
Sadie (they kinda sound like Dir en grey)
D'espairsRay
Girugamesh
Suicide Ali
Gazette
Luna Sea
haha and Heidi.....my friend likes Heidi A LOT...I really like their one song Houmatsu....I think they are an ok band. Not one of my favorites but I like them.
and you can find JRock downloads on a lot of other forums (batsu, Jpopmusic and bww2 to name a few)

Precious4e's list=awsome... i'd add MUCC (already been said), lynch., UnsraW, and... uh... nega? i like the harder stuff ^_^ anything i can send you, just drop me a line (i have everything from Dir en grey, and most if not all of the bands i've talked about in this post... pm me)
also, he's korean, but seo taiji's solo work reminds me of linkin park a lot for some reason... do NOT touch his not-solo stuff (seo taiji and boys *shiver*) because it's poooooo in my opinion, but the solo stuff=teh awsome <3
good luck!! now i remember my n00b days of jrock @_@ oh yea and welcome! this forum's nice... see, we take care of ya here! <3

definatly alice nine, miyavi, and nightmare. and depending on how hard you like to rock, add mucc, and gazette =]
I agree with Alice Nine, MUCC, and nightmare! Kaggra is pretty too! and GazettE, Sadie (not La:Sadie....just sadie...I agree w/ Precious4e, they do sound like Dir En Grey), Ayabie, D'espairs Ray, 12012, Moi Dix Mois, Awoi, Girugamesh, and Vidoll. It all depends on your taste in music.

for something harder id recommend dir en grey (the last album mostly)
i think hanamuke is quite hard as well.... rentrer en soi kinda sounds like dir en grey but .... at the same time not :relief: sry its confusing i mean you can feel they were influenced by deg ^^
then...maybe moi dix mois?
or deathgaze? if i remember correctly they were pretty hard i dont listen that much to that kinda music but well...uhm...and sadie but it was already said....you can try some kagerou too though it takes some getting used to ^^
and ...yeah that's mainly what i'd recommend and of course all the other bands already said (gazette nightmare kagrra heidi......)
and welcome to the world of jrock feel free to ask questions if you need anything ^^

So many I love have already been mentioned. I'll go grab my Cure magazines to find more:
-Mellow
-Transtic Nerve
-Physcho le Cemu
-Phantasmagoria
-exist trace
-jealkb
-SCREW
-SADS
-Rentrer en Soi
-kannivalism
....there are too many--it's hurting my head. Keep in mind I've heard very few of these except for SADS and Phantasmagoria, like the average Engrish-speaking J-rock fan. Try them out if you like.

yup got to agree that's why i said this album...cos Reiko alexander wanted some heavy stuff...their last album can be considered heavy right?:?
cos i can never tell teh style of a band....>.< so if its not heavy stuff ill take it off the list >.<
Hmm, it's funny to see how most of you just recommend Visual bands...
Remember: japanese rock is not equal to Visual Kei.

Yeah, I know more than VK, but that's all Cure magazine is.

r there any like punkey jrock bands like blink 182 etc
For punk i'd say:
ellegarden
asian kung fu generation (i think they're classified as punk..and I like their songs)
for other non heavy-death-metal rock (kind of like alternative, pop rock) i'd try:
high and mighty color
do as inifinity
ketchup mania
mothercoat
zwei
I mostly listen to the VK bands so I dunno much other bands cept maybe the pop rock ones.

Another good pop rock band is UVERworld. For punk or post-punk, try SADS.

Ah! I just remembered the band that I wanted to list but forgot the name of
Their name is "the out mods"
when I first saw them they seriously remind me of Black Stones from NaNa lol. The lead singer Sana could be a Nana.
Also 9mm Parabellum Bullet. Just heard of them. They're not bad.
