I have a tie, but they are but from the same director, Akira Kurosawa:
Ran and the 7 samurais (Shichinin no samurai).
As for actors, I would say Toshiro Mifune, though I have seen some good movies performances by "Beat" Takeshi Kitano.

Fave J-Flick,
That's easy. A Taxing Woman " Marusa No Onna" about a tax inspector. The film is great. Why? Because it's created by the late great master people watcher Jozo Itami & feature his amazing wife the lovely Nobuko Miyamoto who's simply mad as a hatter yet ever so cute, strong obsessive in her job running circles 'round the guys in the tax office with skills only she can get away with. The film has great visual humour and a soundtrack that'll stick in your mind for ages.
Just as Crouching Tiger gut westeners to watch Asian movies, so too is this that kind of movie anyone can watch without complaining about subtitles as the humour & excelent acting by Noboku is very visual. It's a mad film. worth a look on DVDor Vid.

Hard to say what my fave is especially as I've got a few at home I haven't had time to watch yet. So far I like a lot of Kitano's films espec' Kikujiro and Sonatine. Both beautifully shot. I also like My neighbour Totoro a lot and Princess Mononoke, need to see more Miyazaki films I think!
L8r. ^-^
"A Taxing Women" was decent... "Ringu" was ten times better than the American version, but the original was decent as well... I remember this movie similar to "Run Lola Run" which was amazingly funny and intriguing, but unfortunately I don't remember the name of it (if I did I would go buy it now). Now "Fulltime Killer" is the greatest movie I've seen in a couple of years! Tok and O, two assassins, fight it out for the title of top assassin in Asia. If you like action movies that are not just about explosions and loud sound effects, then this is the thing to get.
PS. Check out "Love and Pop" by Hideaki Anno (director of Neon Genesis Evangelion)
Havenエt seen much (unfortunately), but so far Iエve loved Samurai Fiction and Kikujiro no natsu. BR was ok too..
Iエd love to see the ringu, all though Iエm not sure if itエs wise..Iエve heard that itエs much more efficient than the american version, and Iエm still having nightmares on that one...brrrrr :)

my current favorites are:
1- Sanjuro (Kurosawa)
2- Spirited Away (Miyazaki)
3- Seven Samurai (Kurosawa)
that's the most recent one i've seen (if you don't count anime). though seven samauri was wonderful too (haven't seen it in a few years).

I have a lot of favs, but the handful I love are "Owl's Castle" directed by Shinoda Masahiro, "Versus" directed by Ryuhei Kitamura, all of Miike's films, "Battle Royale" and "Sonatine", and many of the films Riki Takeuchi stars in. I guess that is more than a handful. It is hard to narrow it down. Akira Kurosawa is a given, I guess. "The Seven Samurai" is my all-time favorite. Period.

Oh yeagh- I forgot all about the Ringu films. I have seen the first two, directed by Nakata, and I have the other sequel that was directed by Jouji Iida, Ring: Spiral. The afore-mentioned i bought and I forget to see if it had subs or not. Oh well. The Korean adaption is quite interesting as well, "The Ring Virus".

tampopo is great! I highly recommend it.
the focus is on making the perfect bowl of ramen, but along the way you are introduced to a bunch of people who see food as a kind of religion - and its really funny.

Well I've seen alot of Japanese horror lately, last one was Kairo, good one indeed, top of the line favorites are the ring movies though (NOT the american one) Now I'm just waiting to see all of the Ju-On movies, saw the first TV one, pretty damn scary I would say ;) Also a big Gibli fan after my good friend introduced me to the wonderfull fantasy worlds that they create, sofar I've seen, Sen to Chihiro no Kamikakushi, Mononoke Hime, Tonari No Totoro and Majo no Takkyuubin, excellent movies, just simply love them

My favorite movie at the time is JUON (videoversion 1). I am really longing for the theater version, cuz what I have seen on the trailer, itエs going to be one of the scariest movies yet.
Ohh I forgot! Iエm a really big fan of RINGU (All of them), and I really hate the American version of it.
Wes Craven is about to do a remake of JUON. Hmm It will probably also suck. Why donエt just leave the original versions when they already are soooo good.
Me too like Nikorasu-san like JIBURI very much. Totoro is an alltime favorite. Spirited Away is also a big favorite.

Totally agree, The Ring (american version) was a real failure, plastic american actors as always, they treat you like you are stupid and have to explain everything in close detail so you REALY understand, it's like "please for crying out loud! I can figure out thing myself you know" :auch: No I say leave the good movies alone, if you have trouble understanding them, well bad luck then...

Actually i thought the ring was better than ringu
probably because i watched it first, the stories werent all that different but he cinematography in the us version was better
for the fear factor it was a pretty dull movie from either side of the ocean and it is far from my favorite movie from any country
its too difficult to choose a favorite movie but of course i like kitanos work although i find his newer stuff boring, that said zatoichi was 10 times better than dolls
i really like one movie called laundry (ランドリー) starring koyuki and kubozuka yousuke

All About Lily Chou-Chou is a stunning movie by Shunji Iwai - some may find it a little over-long (i think its just under 3hrs) but its a great film.
It's a study into the life of a teenager whose life (along with numerous classmates) is turned upside down as a result of bullying. Far from a preachy film it explores the cause and effects of bullying which in some scenes is emotionally devastating. A hard film to watch (hardly a friday night with a few beers film) its hugely recommended so long as you have the patience to give it a try.
For an introduction to his work that is a lot lot more accessible - you could try his other films such as APRIL STORY, or LOVE LETTER.
Iwai also made "SWALLOWTAIL BUTTERFLY" which was acclaimed by critics and fans but left me cold (im still yet to have finished it).

Hey Daft, do you remember the scene in Versus when the crazy guy slaps the living crap out of the short dude with the endless supply of guns? That scene was hilarious! Speaking of guys, did you notice that the last gun the scaredy cat guy pulled out had a price tag on it?
In addtion to Versus, I adore Princess Blade and So Close.

The Ring was ok, but neither version had me jumping out of my skin....all were ok at best.
Off topic a little, I loved the Korean movie, Tale of Two Sisters, at least there were some scary moments in it and the DTS is sweet.

So far one of my favourite Japanese movies is called Gozu. It was recommended to me by a fellow member named Yukio Michael. It was a strange, quirky, almost David Lynch's Mulholland Drive-type movie. Alot of surrealism. I was quite entertained.
I love J-horror! Asian horror are my favorite movies. Here are some of my favorite J horror movies, in no particular order:
1. Ringu series
2. Ju-On series
3. Dark Water
4. Noroi
5. ヤdishon
There are many more, South-Korean horror movies are also very good.

definetly and absolutelty RASHOMON! the most brialliant, mind boggling movie ive ever seen. hands down to the great akira kurosawa. ive seen some of his works like..the red beard, jojimbo, ran(i got bored watching this), sanjuro, madadayo and dreams. but unfortunatelty i havent seen 7 samurai who said to be his greatest work. damn! ive been looking that movie for like ages!

yay favorites huh! I have lots :relief:
well, here are some:
Ichi the killer
Survive style 5+
Shimotsuma Monogatari
I love Tadanobu Asano! my live goal is to watch all his movies :p
I'm abit of a sappy soppy person  so I tend to go for japanese romance (but NOT tragic kind, only the ones with beautiful ending) just coz' I appreciate the creative ways that the directors portrays beauty in the film either from music, scenery, plot etc. So I like 'Ima, Ai ni Yukimasu', 'Love Letter' (despite it being old i LUV IT), 'Tada, kimi wo aishiteru'
I would LUV to watch Comedy movies but the only one I got hold of was 'Lovely Complex' :relief: , not very funny-funny but very dramatic in such a way that I can't help thinking "awwww how cuteeeee"

Mostly because of the blood (^^)!!
I prefer the first Battle Royal Movie then the second one
Because the first one everybody started to kill everyone just to survive
Another favorite movie is Death Note
Killing people just by using a notebook...so cool (^V^)!!
Azumi is good as well, even though the killings was so fake
there was still a lot of blood in it!

i think the seven samurais is the best japanese film ever and for animation, Akira.
these two films are awesome and with Godzella, they're real classics.
i also liked Ikiru, Zatoichi, Rashomon, Dreams, Ran...
i don't think i ever saw a japanese film that was boring.

What was my first japanese film? I don't know, but I remember, the main cast was Hiroyuki Sanada. I think 8 samurai, or something...?
By the way, the fav movie is MoonChild. But there are some more gorgeous...Shinobi, Ringu series, Kagen no tsuki, Lovely Complex, Gegege no Kitaro, Azumi(first episode), Ashura(that was so funny).
And some dorama series:
Gokusen, Dragonzakura, Densha otoko, You'll Under arrest.
And I love all of Takeshi films!

I think the film you saw with Hiroyuki Sanada was 里見八犬伝 (SATOMI HAKKENDEN), a supernatural Jidaigeki (period feature) also starring Hiroko Yakushimaru, Shinichi Chiba (Sonny Chiba) and Etsuko Shihomi and others.
I remember watching that when it first came out in the theaters.
My favorite Japanese film would have to be a triple-tie between the 3 films 大林信彦 (Nobuhiko Oobayashi) directed ; 転校生 (Tenkousei), 時をかける少女 (Toki Wo Kakeru Shoujo, whose animated sequal was released a few years back and was a big hit) and さびしんぼう (Sabishinbou).
These 3 films are considered a trilogy as they all take place and filmed on location in a city called 尾道 (Onomichi)in 広島県 (Hiroshima Prefecture). While all three of them have supernatural themes, the portrayals of highschool students' everyday, mundane lives are very real and dream-like at the same time. The location is just SO beautiful. It is funny it makes you feel nostalgic about a place that you have never been to.
「転校生」 Two highschool students at a HS in Onomichi (one of which has just transferred there) one day find that they have switched bodies. The boy is trapped inside his female classmate's body and and she in his. 尾美としのり (Toshinori Omi) and 小林聡美 (Satomi Kobayashi) in the lead roles.
「時をかける少女」 A teeange girl discovers that she can travel through time. She finds out that not all of her memories are real but rather planted by someone who holds the key to the strange occurances around her. Are her childhood friends really what they seem? The first film starring the actress 原田知世 (Tomoyo Harada).
「さびしんぼう」 A shy teenage boy, a son of a priest, is in love with a beautiful girl but thinks she is totally out of his league. There is something about her, though. She is mysterious.... like she is hiding something behind her beautiful smile. Then one day, this "thing" shows up in his room. IT looks ridiculous with a face painted white like a clown. It appears out of nowhere and the next second, it is gone. Is there a connection between the object of his affection and this creature? Both characters are played by the same actress (富田靖子、Yasuko Tomita). The ending is so bitter-sweet it makes me teary-eyed everytime I watch it. 尾美としのり, again, stars as the boy.
I don't know the availablity of these films on DVDs outside Japan. If you can find them, check them out.
My favorite movie is "Umizaru-limit of love-".
Also I like horror movie, "Ring" is the most interesting horror movie, I think.

Battle Royale is my favourite movie ever. There's just such much to appreciate about it. I especially like the relaxed attitude to death, where some characters deaths are basically just numbers, and the violence in the film is very natural and has an uncoreographed feel to it, as opposed to something like Buffy the Vampire Slayer for example. Also the soundtrack is beautiful, especially the Blue Danube.
We saw this movie just now. That was incredible. But...does anybody knows who sing the ending song? Thanks the answer.

I just saw that movie at a DVD rental shop the other day. I am familiar with Yuuka, the lead actress, as a TV personality. How was she? Can she act?
I haven't seen that many real life Japanese movies, only one in fact. That being a really messed up/scarring movie entitled "Suicide Club."
Other than that I have seen very many anime series' and movies. Spirited Away, Princess Mononoke, and Totoro being the top 3!

I haven't seen too many Japanese movies, but I really enjoyed both Ju-On movies. I'm a big horror movie fan. The only problem with the movie was after watching it I didn't even feel safe hiding under the covers of my bed.
Oh! Shall We Dance? was a really good movie.
Then there are the animated movies, like Howl's Moving Castle and My Neighbor Totoro.

ATW is a great film, but my favorite is Zatoichi. I especially like the musical scenes.:music:
That, the drinking, & the sword fighting make it a great drinking movie, too.
Oh, & Akira!

I don't know if this helps, but there's a decent site for Japanese horror movies. It's called Snowblood Apple. It has a good amount of reviews/summaries for Ringu and whatnot. Actually, I think it's more Asian horror, but there's a good amount of Japanese movies there too.
ah lets see
I love both Moon Child and Kagen no Tsuki
just watched Azumi the other day and enjoyed it--I think I mainly liked the fact that she's a really tough girl and she's doing all of that
I loved seeing 7 Samurai... I thought it was great
and there's a few animated ones that I like-- Spirited Away, Tokyo Godfathers (I liked how fun it was XD)
that's all I can think of right now ^^
