ok, so heres the story. i did that whole process to be able to type japanese on my computer, and it worked. i easily alternated through hiragana and katakana but for some reason all of a sudden, i could only type in the roman alphabet and katakana on the internet. the problem seemed to arise from nowhere. it works fine on my word processor and everywhere else for that matter, but i cant figure out why it wont let me do that on the internet.

could someone please help me out here? its really pissing me off.

Are you using XP? Also what browser are you using?

Do you know how to change the input type in your IME? The Microsoft IME supports 5 different inputs. Hiragana (this is what you want most of the time, as it converts to kanji) half-width kana, full-width kana, full-width romaji, straight romaji, and maybe another. The IME icon in your tool bar needs to have a hirigana あ to be in hiragana/kanji mode. Right click it if it doesn't.

Sometimes the IME will be grayed out when the selected part of the browser isn't a place where you can type. Try clicking someplace that accepts text input and then try turning the IME on.

Sounds like your IME is somewhat hidden. There's a bar where you can move it across the toolbar. Try that.

Have you tried right clicking on your toolbar at the bottom of the screen and checking to see what toolbars you have installed.

Does the language toolbar showup? and if it does do you have Japanese IME installed on your computer to use it?

You have to un-select the KANA button - check that Hiragana is selected, and if you have a Japanese keyboard try pressing the Kana button (its left or right of space bar).

yes to all your questions. the part i need just suddenly stopped appearing when i opened the internet.

Don't use the words "http:" or "www" -- if you do, try it w/ spaces inbetween them.

I had the similar problem. Late i found that the IME was hidden.

Every once in a while my IME does some stupid things too. A restart usually fixes it. On my Mac I have never had a problem.

Click on the little downward arrow on the right, make sure the top 'options' are checked, and just play with that until the input mode (入力モード) shows up and lets you select what you want to use (hiragana, katakana, romaji, etc)
