Acid Black Cherry is the rocking new solo project of Janne Da Arc vocalist Yasu. He just released his debut single "Spell Magic" and already he's worked with some of the biggest names in J-Rock. SHUSE (formerly of La'Chryma Christi) and YUKI (formerly of Aucifer) have worked with him as well as Sugizo who recorded the guitar for this first single and Chisato (Penicillin) who will be playing guitar for Acid Black Cherry's summer tour as well as appearing on the Spell Magic pv. With this much star power and yasu returning once again to his hard-rock, visual kei roots it's sure that Acid Black Cherry is going to be a hit.

Wow I just saw the video! It was funny~ The way they were dressed in the beginning reminded me of Kanon when he was in the Bonds Kizuna movie.

Acid Black Cherry is releasing a new single in September titled "Black Cherry"

I cant wait for it!!!

The single, Black Cherry, will be released on September 26th in two versions, one as a CD/DVD set and the other as simply a CD. The second track of the single will be a cover song again, just like their debut single SPELL MAGIC.

@rby, yeah I know what you mean about the second song on spell magic. I guess it was a cover of some really old song, he's doing the same thing on black cherry as well, the second song is a cover of some 1980-1990 song...I'd honestly prefer two brand new Acid Black Cherry songs, but I'm just happy he's releasing stuff fairly quickly at least! And I'm not sure about the Spell Magic trans, but I'll see what I can find ^^

I think they are all pretty happy from what I've read they all seem to like ABC, I dont think it's like a Janne Da Arc split up thing, it's more like a hiatus like Hyde and L'arc where they plan to get back together again in the near future

Okay... I discovered this thread very late, I guess.

I need to say that I'm in love with Janne Da Arc and everything about them (since about 3 years now ^^ and it's a pity the thread here for JDA is soooo lazy ;____;). So of course I also love ABC.
And.. Yasu is a very special person to me. He's so awsome, honest and optimistic. I really adore and admire him. I have listened to his voice for so long now and I really love it. He's so talented!!!!
I've also listened to his words and if you ever read something of what he had said, you will discover he's such a cool person. His sense of humour is fantastic <3

Aw~ by the way: You ask for the reactions of the fans. As one of those "hardcore" fans I can say that we all were kinda shocked when they announced their break.
But at least it's not just yasu who did a solo project. Ka-yu and you released both an album so far, shuji did an DVD and kiyo is supporting other musicians with his piano play.
So they're still active and I read their blogs nearly every day, so I know they're all in contact with each other.
We still love them and we still support them, no matter what they do.
And I guess I can speak for all of us JDA-fans from oversea here *smile*
(We're not so many *laugh*)

Okay, about the single Yasu is releasing in November. It's titled "rakuen", but it can also be read as "paradise." (which is a song of JDA, too. So I guess he wouldn't call it "paradies"). You was able to listen to that song when they showed a live in Yayogi Park of Acid Black Cherry from this sommer in TV (someone uploaded it on youtube if I'm not wrong). It's a great song by the way. Yasu freaked out and got lost in the audience for a while XD ^^

It's a song from 1985. A cover of Look.
It was yasu's most favourite song when he was a teenager, that's why he choose to cover it. He loved to sing it karaoke when he was younger XD ^^

Aw~ you were suprised og those lyrics? If you'll you trough the translations of janne Da Arc, you'd see it's not that untypical for yasu. It's from the point of a woman and very sexy. When I read those lyrics of Spell magic I was just like: "Awwww~ need a cold shower!!!" just as same as it was for Dry or Labyrinth of janne Da Arc.
Yasu loves to write about sex and that stuff.

In my opinion it's a beautiful song as Shinin on is. I expect it will fit perfectly to Yasus voice. He has a great talent to sing ballads.

OMG I'm in love with ABC!!! I first found out about them from reading Fool's Mate (Yasu was on the cover of August edition) but I wasn't able to find any of their music so I gave up. But yesterday, while watching videos on Youtube, I randomly came across the PV for Spell Magic...man that's a good song!

Can anyone tell me what songs they have released so far? I only know of Spell Magic, and the upcoming Black Cherry......are there any other songs?

I made some scans of the issue of Fool's Mate that I have which features Yasu on the cover....is anyone interested in scans or no? Either way, I might just put them here anyways sometimes today or tomorrow.

In between recordings, performances and TV appearances, Yasu found a little time for an interview with JaME.


First of all we would like to ask you, why the name Acid Black Cherry?

Yasu: In Japan, the term 'ABC’ means something dirty - A for kissing, B for petting and C for sex - so I chose the name using 'ABC' as the initial letters. ‘Black Cherry’ is my erogenous zone, so I chose the name ‘Black Cherry’.

With Acid Black Cherry, you're moving in a different direction musically than in your work with Janne Da Arc. What are the differences for you between these two bands?

Yasu: The way of composing songs is the same. I would say that the difference is that for Acid Black Cherry I chose the musicians while thinking about the completed song, so the final sound would be different from Janne Da Arc’s.

Can you tell us if the material you are working on now with Acid Black Cherry is all brand new material, or if it's some songs you've been compiling for a while but just didn't fit with Janne Da Arc?

Yasu: I composed all new songs for Acid Black Cherry.

Who are your biggest musical influences?

Yasu: My biggest musical influence is DEAD END, a Japanese hard rock band.

Could you tell us something about the song SPELL MAGIC?

Yasu: Unlike usual singles, it has a hard, heavy sound.

The second track of the SPELL MAGIC single is a cover of a song by the boy band LOOK; why did you decide to cover this song?

Yasu: I chose this particular song because I liked this song very much when I was an elementary school student.

The music video for SPELL MAGIC is very amusing, how did you come up with the idea?

Yasu: When I debuted as a solo artist, I wanted to make a music video that matched a newcomer. Then I had the idea of an unfashionable band having an audition and then overwhelming the judges with an unexpectedly cool performance, thus making their debut on AVEX. In the music video I’m dressed like an otaku, and that means that you shouldn’t judge music by appearances. We, as musicians, are a kind of otaku people and that’s why we can be musicians, I think.

What can we expect from your new single Black Cherry, to be released on September 26th?

Yasu: I don’t know much about jazz, but I put as many jazz elements into the song as I could. I used a brass section and gave it a BIG BAND feel as well.

Similar to your first single, BLACK CHERRY also includes a cover song as the B-side; why do you choose to include a cover song on your singles?

Yasu: At first we didn’t plan to put a B side on the single, but our staff proposed that as it is my solo project, it would be better to release it in a way which I could only do as a solo artist. So, I decided to put a cover song on it.

For the recording of SPELL MAGIC and also for your lives, you are working together with a number of impressive musicians such as SHUSE (ex. La Cryma Christi), YUKI (Dustar-3, ex. Λucifer), Chisato (PENICILLIN), SUGIZO (S.K.I.N., Luna Sea) and more. What was it like to work with them and how were these connections made?

Yasu: Not all of them, but many of them are my old acquaintances. Most of them are my seniors, so I thought at first that I would be nervous to work with them, but they really enjoy what I do so I’m very happy and I learn a lot from them.

Why did you choose to do all those secret lives instead of normal concerts?

Yasu: When my solo debut was determined, I wanted to be treated as a newcomer. I am grateful to the many fans that support Janne Da Arc and come to our lives. I was in a good environment, so I depended on it. When I started my solo career, I didn’t want to forget the vitality I had in my indies period and I thought about my own abilities as an artist. How many people could I attract in a brand-new environment, when nobody knows Acid Black Cherry, no one has listened to or seen us before? So to remember my original intentions, I dared to do a secret tour.

After the release of BLACK CHERRY, do you have plans for more releases, such as a full album?

Yasu: I’m planning to release an album after I release several more singles.

What plans do you have for the future of Acid Black Cherry?

Yasu: After the release of an album, I would like to do a tour through the whole country.

Please give a message for your overseas fans.

Yasu: I’m very happy that you listen to our music despite the culture barrier. I want to do tours overseas! You guys who read this, will you come to see our lives if we would do that??

Yes, I just wanted to say that, because... yeah, I don't want anyone to think of him in that way, that he covers those songs just because it's easier for him than to write a song or something. Because this is not the way yasu thinks at all.

But even though these are the music directions he prefers, he's absolutly talented to write and sing ballads. ^^; And I guess he knows that.
And also... it's late autmn, okay, by now it's winter... but Janne released a slow sonmg in that time every year, so i guess it's just something like normal for him. It fits to the season, the slower songs I mean ^^

And about an album.. He said there will be one for sure.
But so far he enjoys something he didn't have when he was working with janne: to release songs one after the other without much time between them. So, I guess he just uses this freedom a little longer ^^;

according to yesasia, the title for the fourth single is 'Fuyu no Maboroshi'
I'm going to try translating that to english unless someone can translate it first.

I got it translated (took me faster than expected...only had to look up one word) and I got "Winter's Illusion" (Fuyu being winter and Maboroshi being Illusion or Chimera)

Janne Da Arc is one of the most popular bands in japan and they didn't came to Europe or America. They just made their way into other asian countries. A few times.
If you'd ask a japnese about gazette or dir en grey or.. don't know. Alice nine., just one of the bands who are pretty popular right now over here, they just won't know who you're talking about.
Ask them about Janne Da Arc and they'll know.

But... nothing is impossible, right? ... On the other hand... ABC is not half as popular as Janne Da Arc is, even though he already plays the Budokan next year.
In 2002 Janne Da Arc played there for their 100th time. And they played it a lot of times after that, you can imagine how succesful they were.
And they could play the Tokyo Dome, for sure~ that's the difference.

yasu is still the vocal of Janne Da Arc and who listens to him knows that Janne is the Band he belongs to in his heart and if he'll ever go oversea he'd just go with his four bandmembers kiyo, shuji, you and ka-yu~
But Janne Da Arc is also signed by Avex *löl*

In Germany I managed to get the Jan 2008 edition of Fools Mate (before it was 2008) with ABC in... I don't think any ones posted it yet... when I have a little more time I'll take pictures and post them... shame I can't translate past the first word :(

Whatever~ yasu looks great in that PV and also with that eye patch, but still... The Shuj looked way better with his pirate patch in 2006 XD It suits to him.

And I cried, when i first listened to Fuyu no Maboroshi... And now that i know the lyrics, I also now why I had to cry that bad.

Ahh that's such an amazing PV. I love the way it ties in all the other ABC PV's so far. Both really sad and at the same time hilarious. The part where they flashed back over all the previous videos had me in tears.

so I've finally listened to the whole album through a couple of times and I've gotta say it's freaking awesome!! Yasu did not lie when he said he wanted a rock album, he definitely didn't let me down, I love the songs sins, shoujo no inori, scars, and murder license especially, all really cool songs and amazing guitar solos!! The whole album is really great though, Dragon Carnival is kind of a fun uplifting song that puts me in a good mood, and Prologue End is a beautiful and moving ballad. It's such a great album, it flows really well and I just love it to peices!! :D

the more I listen to murder liscense the more I love it! The song just completely rocks, its by far my favorite on the album. The guitar and yasu are just amazing in it!

Big news for ABC fans!!

Acid Black Cherry will release a live DVD, Acid Black Cherry 2008 tour "Black List", on August 27th. It will include footage taken from the band's tour finale at Budokan.

On the same date, the band will release a new single, which will be available in two versions. One version of 20th Century Boys will include a DVD with the music video for the title track, as well as behind-the-scenes footage, while the other versions will contain just two tracks.

I just got into them a few days ago and gaaaah lovelovelove.
Can anyone tell me how many albums/which is the best one? and any songs to recommend? I have a couple that I don't know the name of (my comp can't read Japanese) as well as Black Cherry (so addicted right now!) and Spell Magic which was the first one I heard and totally fell in love.

And also, I was wondering why the only one in magazines is Yasu when it's a whole band? Unless I'm completely mistaken and have no idea what I'm talking about, which is highly likely =P

Acid Black Cherry aren't a band as such... the line up changed... the people in the PVs aren't the ones who recored the albums and singles... ABC is basically Yasu's solo project.

To answer your question TsumetaiKaze Black List is not the only album. There is also a cover album called Recreation which was made sometime this years.

Oh and anyway here is some Acid Black Cherry news for all who don't already know.

On November 26, 2008 Acid Black Cherry's new single Jigsaw from the up coming album will be released. It will be released in two version, a CD version and a CD+DVD version which will include a music video for the title track and behind the scenes footage.
