View Full Version : Let Final Fantasy Die

I'm a huge fan of japanese games but (and I stated this once before on another thread) they have started to come up short on new original games. Sequel after sequel of tried and true games (Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest, Resident Evil, ect ect) keep making their way onto the shelves and while some have maintained I think Final Fantasys time has come and gone.
Sure the movie had cool graphics but it seriously lacked in any sort of originality, plot or true satisfaction. And how many of us even bothered with FF12, especially after the embarassing mess that was X-2.
So, as much as I love Final Fantasy, I think it's time to let it die. It's had a good run and lived a long life but it's time to say goodbye.

The thing with the final fantasy series is it isn't like the old ones where they had any relation to each other. Final fantasy 6 and up have all been different. The reason they give them the final fantasy name would be marketing. They could give them a different name, but why? What purpose would it serve other then possibly investing thousands of dollars on a flop because no one knows the name.
The Mana universe is a little different. They actually ARE related to each other. heroes of mana is a turn based strategy game but not. In the game the elements have been reformed to kids and the only old elements are shade and gnome. There must be something i missed where the elements were destroyed.
Anyway, thats my take. The one thing you should be complaining about is the destruction of the saga frontier series. The first one was fun though not very popular due to its difficulty and not simplistic like (eg. final fantasy and chrono trigger). So, they come out with a masterpiece called saga frontier 2 and that bombed because of the first one. ok... im gonna stop now . lol

I have to admit, I haven't played the Mana series :relief: maybe I should start.
But (and this is just my opinion) I didn't have a problem with the later FF games not being related in any way. The thing that bugged me was that Final Fantasy is known for it's good plots, it's likable characters, and it's blend of anicent and modern influences. (Characters fighting with swords when they have futuristic technology :p gotta love it)
But as the games went on the plots started getting weak, the characters sucked and they started to lose the 'Final Fantasy vibe'.
FF10 did it for me. The characters were annoying at best and had some of the dumbest dialogue I've ever heard (not including X-2). They had something good with FF7 but they messed it up with overly emo heroes and useless secondary characters that didn't fit anywhere into the story.

not sure how you can call titus emo exactly. Maybe the fact he would whine in the middle of a major battle of staying alive.lol. Whine later battle first =P
you've never played the SoM series? *BONK
You crazy? The mana series is the best ever made. The orginal game title was Seiken Densetsu final fantasy adventures for gameboy... lol.
Then Seiken Densetsu 2 came out and it was only 1 main 2 side kicks. Tank, healer, caster. All of them were awesome. Biggest part was the fact it was multiplayer. Yep thats right. A 3 player action rpg. awesome.
Seiken Densetsu 3
This one was honestly the best one out of the early nintendo series. This one you can choose out of 6 characters who the main character will be and you can choose who the other 2 will be in you party. Awesome idea. Also, there are crystals that choose your path and change your job.
Here is a Wiki link for more info on the series

the song artist in 2 and 3. Awesome guy.

I came in a little late to the Playstation craze :relief: I missed a lot of the old classics. Thanks for the link though.
And Tidus, while not a 'slash your wrist' emo, he did a LOT of whining throughout the game. You'd be in the middle of playing and next thing you know it would flash to a cut scene with Tidus and/or Yuna going on and on and on about nothing.
And Yuna was by far the most patchetic lead female character EVAH.
Half the game was Tidus "I have issues because my daddy thought I was a loser" and the other half was Yuna "well, I'm not really happy but I'm going to fake a smile while selflessly sacrificing myself for no good reason".

I say keep Final Fantasy going. For those of us who were there from the beginning, I'd hate to see it die now, so many years later. I haven't had time to play FF XII or FF X-2, but I certainly was obsessed with the online one (XI) which took 6 months of my life from me.

>_> but i liked FFX and Tidus...
i like the direction the gameplay is going in, though... story-wise im not quite so sure but i can survive on not-QUITE-so-amazing storylines if there are a couple characters i like, i guess... by this i mean im just trying to have hope XD oh well...

FFX had it's faults, but I still came away from it with an overall good experience. I never played X-2 or 11 and didn't really like the new combat system of 12, but I think they will find the magic again. They've just been focusing on their cutscene graphics a bit more than their storylines.

owwww a negative thread about FF, can't let that untouched ofcourse. haha although I do agree that FFX-2 sucked except for seeing more of my favourite FFX characters. Also I'm not too charmed of the storyline from FFXII, pity, too political, doesn't feel like an FF game is supposed to feel. So far, so good. But then, I read this nasty words about FFX ;p, tut tut, I really love that game to pieces. Haha you can't let FF die....I'm just having faith that one day they'll make another classic like FFVII and FFX (haha yes I place them in the same category, please don't kill me haha) I have a dream ...("just couldn't resist myself" quoting Jack Sparrow by quoting Martin Luther King, ambitious, ambitious)...

I think where they are really going wrong is with the Main Bad Guy. The Bad Guy's make the game for me and they are becoming more and more ignored. Who didn't think Sephiroth was the sh*t? Why? Because he was interesting and present throughout the game, popping up all the time and causing mayhem and destruction, and he had a good background story.
Look at the rest of the FF Bad Guys....
Seifer: while not really a bad guy, he popped up throughout the game and caused trouble, though he was mostly useless. I still liked him.
Edea: barely present, barely spoke, still kinda cool.
Ultimecia: who?
Kuja: maybe a little TO femme. I barely remember
Garland: again, who?
Seymour: had potential, came out lacking and seeming really pathetic. Also, I hated his voice.
Sin: once more, who?
Shuyin: .......huh?
Note all the Bad Guys who pop up at the very end of the game with little back story and a whole lotta 'who the hell is that?'.
And I didn't play 11 and 12 so maybe the Bad Guys there were a bit cooler, I dunno. My point is, if the bad guys suck, the game usually does to.

Seifer: was a slave to the queen. He was more of a lacky then a "bad guy"
Seymour's theme song is completely bad *** in piano form. He was a character that had a creepy micheal jackson feel to him.
Sin: was explaned throughout the whole game. So, if you didn't pay attention. You would have missed the explantion.
I never played ffx2 all the way through; because it got boring. Why was it boring? because you had to RETURN TO ALL the summons grounds all over agian and to me that felt like i had to start over. Like everything i did in FFX ment nothing to the devs.
You really need to read the FFX and FFX-2 wiki's. They explain a lot.

Sin: was explaned throughout the whole game. So, if you didn't pay attention. You would have missed the explantion.
Yeah, he was explained to death throughout the game but he never really appears until the very end, besides a few little cut scenes where he just pops up to prove he's not just an imaginary character. Even with all the 'Sin is coming to kill us all' he still came off as sort of a side character.
Just think, the entire purpose of that game was to kill Sin. All that effort you'd think he would show up and give you a reason to want to travel a world just to hunt him down, but no. :okashii:
Same goes for Ultemecia and Garland.

Seifer and Edea weren't really bad guys in the end.
But I agree that the bad guys just pop in the end out of nowhere. They obviously appear just to get killed.
Anyway, I don't want FF to die. I love it too much.

We'll see, tho, I could be eating my own words very soon  I don't want Final Fantsy to die, but any more crappy games and it's time to take it out to pasture.

Hmm you might think Final Fantasy X wasn't good, but why do you actually think that? Cause you compare it with stuff like FF VII and VIII, even Square can't make masterpiece after masterpiece. Just think about it, wouldn't you consider FF X a great name if it was named something else? And why are they naming each episode Final Fantasy? Well thats because they're attached to the name, Final Fantasy, and everything behind it, a while ago Squaresoft was heading towards bankruptcy, and decided to leave the market with heads held high, so they named the game that would be their last Final Fantasy, and yes, Final Fantasy saved the small company, and made it into the giant it is today, i think this is reason enough to use the title Final Fantasy over and over. And what the hell would you name a game with Cid, Moogles, Chocobos, Fira, Firaga, Curaga, Blizzaga, Ultima, Bahamut, etc. etc. There's no Squaresoft without Final Fantasy.

I didn't compare it with previous Final Fantasys, the game just didn't do it for me. I found every character (with the exception of Auron) incredibly annoying and over-the-top, the dialogue and voice acting stale, the gameplay boring. It had it's moments, definitley, but it seemed like they were spending all their effort on the graphics and not enough on a solid game.
When you keep making title after title of the same game brand and it keeps getting stupider and stupider...well, maybe it's time to throw in the towel.
You never know, they could totally redeem themselves with the new FF games. Or not. :relief:

lol... not giving up your thing on ff should die eh? Thats the difference between a true squaresoft fan and a gamer. I've loved squaresoft from the final fantasy movie to final fantasy games. Breathe of Fire and saga frontier. Heck, i know the final fantasy movie was bad. But the CG was amazing and i watched it 3 times in the theator. Why? because i support squaresoft.
I LOVED final fantasy X. It has a lot of good story to it. I spent 105 hours on the game getting all the last weapons and beating the last boss so quickly because of it lol...
The point is Final Fantasy will not die because people like me won't let it die. Between the music and the stories. Obviously final fantasy is not dieing anytime soon and only getting better. Also, to be honest. There is no other company that makes reviting RPG's anymore since the SNES to PSX days. Between Enix and Squaresoft no one else was making an RPG worth looking at. Every single PSX, SNES RPG i own is enix or square. Don't give me the Atlas example. Every game i've played from there wasn't entertaining.
I've wanted to work for Squaresoft even as a child. So, for someone to say a popular multi million dollar genre should die is, just silly. Excuse me; i could say multi BILLION dollar genre :-)
According to Bloomberg Japan, Square Enix has revealed in a recent financial statement meeting that the company estimates that a profit of 10.5 billion yen ($89 million) will be made in the 2003 fiscal year, and that it's planning to ship 11 million copies of its games worldwide. However, Square Enix's profit estimates are 36 percent lower than the two companies' profits from last year combined.
This is JUST in japan!!!!! and this is only Final Fantasy 12... lol... Blah, their "prodictions" are 36% lower . This decides whether or not the CEO gets a new car this month or a new house. lol....

They didn't use voice actors till FFX, and in my opinion their voices are just awrite, not the best, but its not like an amateur group made it. and yeah, FF will not die cause there'd be damn riots on the streets and heads falling lol :D
