who believes in the end of the world??
both in scientific and in religious sense ...

if you believe in the end of the world then how do you picture it??
what reasons do you choose to believe in it?

if not; then why?

I imagine it like this:
We're all happy in our world full of sin, globalization, technology and all.
Now, suddenly some weird astronomical phenomenon occurs, and Witnesses of Jehova declare that the end is nigh, they soon burst into orgasm at the thought of being saved from Armageddon, as the chosen ones of God. The next day, after nothing relevant happening, life continues, the WoJ speaksman or representative declares that they slightly miscalculated things, and that the occurence the other day was only an omen of Armageddon which may happen any day.

Judgement Day actually happened yesterday. God just recreated everything this morning, including all of you, complete with fake memories, and all of your possessions. Only I, out of the entire human race, saw the truth. Bill Shatner was the Almighty and Mr. T was his arch-angel.

Or on a serious note I think it will happen with the Sun exhausts its supply of hydrogen and begins to fuse helium instead, roasting the Earth and everything on it before the whole shmeer collapses into a white dwarf.

Bring marshmellows.

Whoa, whoa. Ain't a white dwarf hotter than a red giant? So that would mean it will eventually turn into a super nova or something? Judging by the fact that it becomes more concentrated.

This is a good question, and one which is fairly straight. Well, karlyboo beat me to it, but why not go over it some more. (this a problem, now I'm gonna have to get a PC over in my study...something like this comes up and I have to run over and pull out some old issues, or books, and. . . )

Yeah, we calculatively have some 50 billion years before our heat source swells to the point of making things a little crispy here on earth. While there are a number of models, they all seem to say that we'd never make it even near the point of being able to see the really strange things that occur, such as toxic skies and so on. The main reason for that would be early water loss.

However, 50 billion years is a pretty long time, so we cannot rest assured that the homo sapien will still be around. Even above that, we today would pretty much say our 'world' has ended when this present line of general civilization stops, if it were to, even while humans yet existed.

The likelihood that the demise of our present line of civilization will have been instigated by any extraterrestial intelligent life form (or whatever make) is extremely small, and for some human-made deity entity to do so, is even more unlikely.

It will, however, end. One day there will be no more life here, and (if the sun novas out enough) no more planet even.

Ok. THere is going to be a time when the world will end. We will probably be dead before it ends. We are going to crash into another galaxy or something. Andromeda? Is it? Yes!

I don't believe in a "Judgement Day" in the religious sense. When your dead you're dead. I would like to think there is more to that, but I don't believe that there is. Scientifically, of course this world will end. When the sun ends so do we...

Call me stupid, call me a retard, but I was DEVASTATED after watching Neon Genesis Evangelion and End of Evangelion. While many might say that its a mere cartoon, it obviously isn't.
Although its not something serious, but I always imagined my Apocalypse, Evangelion inspired me a lot. I have one hobby, and everything else gathers around it. Thats the "Last stand of humanity". Thats why I love things like the Judas Priest albums between Painkiller-Angel of Retribution, NGE, RahXephon, Xenogears and stuff like it. I imagine my Judgment Days all the time, a bit different, a bit mystical, a bit more technocratic, a bit medieval, a bit futuristic, sometimes steampunk and sometimes fantasy. But here's my favorite edition, be warned, its not a scientific work, more like a film script.

The distant future, a research station, probably the last one.
Humanity was attacked by extraterrestrial beings, now these beings began to destroy humanity, at first the reason is pretty obscure, but later, somehow human scientists find out that the aliens are genetically similar to us, which leads to the conclusion that this is how they colonize the space. They send a seed of life the the chosen planet (pretty much like the panspermia theory), and wait patiently until life develops on it.
Now among our aliens advanced gene surgery is a taboo, even they are afraid of the outcome.
But something went dead wrong with the humans from their perspective. They expected humans to be either mindless slaves, or rational beings very much like these aliens.
But somehow humans turned out to be how they are, they learnt how to steal, how to pillage, how to betray, how to differentiate themselves, their family, their friends from the entire human species. In a nutshell, they became egoists, they became individuals.
Now, the humans are almost eradicated, there aren't many left of them, probably only our pack of scientists, but they, they have the chance to ensure humanity's rebirth.
They're field is gene surgery, and simultaneously they are working on two projects:
1, Modifying the human genes and causing it to evolve at a greater speed, so yeah, accelerated evolution.
2, Encoding all the knowledge that humanity possesses at that time into the dns.
How, how not, they prevail with this plan of theirs, but when they could celebrate their victory, the aliens discover them, they discover them and go after them.
This is where the long journey starts with the Ocean as a goal.
During the destruction of the facility the head scientist (I've decided that the head scientist must be a she for obvious reasons) injects the vector virus into herself, which causes her body to start decaying, so time is short.
This is the first chapter of the story, in the second the last pack of humans are traveling together to escort the head scientist to the ocean to ensure humanity's survival.

Voila, probably im nuts, but hell, I'd give everything If I could be the part of such a story.

I believe in both the religious and scientific judgment days. Yes, I'm one of those who believes in the possibility of the Rapture and the days of tribulation that will follow. That's just my opinion. However, I also believe that there is a chance for either natural causes or humanity (http://youtube.com/watch?v=7BnOUOkcr9c) to annihilate the earth. As well, I also subscribe to the belief that when God calls his followers up to heaven, it may not be in the dramatic sense of books such as "Left Behind" - I, personally, believe that some mass catastrophe may occur to "send" all the believers to heaven-biological weapons/climate change/illness, take your pick.

Anywho, I'll agree with everyone here in saying that, eventually, the sun will kill everything off. It's just my opinion that something-or someone-else will get to it much faster.

maybe anti matter bombs...

as known this technology exists but no body dares to experiment with it since the power of antimatter is devastating and may reach a thousand times of an H-bomb
that means good bye continents...earth crust and tidal waves, and earthquakes man made!

so clawn my friend...yes maybe humans will bring judgment day upon them sleves

And just when we have such an awesome toy aliens aren't about to serve as test subjects. Hell, bring it on kill off ET.
Now that would be awesome, I'd rather have people fighting off aliens than people fighting each other. Feels more heroic, and more interesting as well.
Thinking of a human enemy I rarely get this "I want to rip his guts out." feeling, but when I think about aliens... we wouldn't have to hold back right? WE could go on a rampage and prove that we're the bloody dominant species and they're gonna live the rest of their life in oppression and slavery. Hell yeah!

i like that...humanity vs aliens....

we will show them who is boss
anti matter their ***
blow their mother planet to bits...

but what if they have something more powerful??
like dense accelerator sphere?? Albert Einestine proved that if some one can achieve a creation of a sphere...so dense yet so small in mass rotating in high speed then they could bend gravity...create a black hole and even destroy stars...

now that is cool

Jan 4, 2008, 03:47
Yeah but anyone who can do it probably has enough brains to not go around creating black holes all around :D
And if they use that, we'll bring in magic, they can't beat us in that field, a stronger magic than the strongest one always exists, many animes prove it.

bro anti matter technology is available...it is at hand....which means creating an anti matter bomb is achievable ....in reality...it is just that nobody is brave enough or nuts to try and make a bomb that might wipe out two three countries off the map

black hole creation is also a fact proved through the calculations of Albert...
and though it is still theory on papers some one could get the technology to create such massive power..some time in the far far future ...

but magic, now that is superstition ...get us something devastating that sounds achievable!!! hahaha

What? Magic eh?
Like invoking a dormant gene in people that makes them available to transfer energy, after all, if you can transfer energy, you can leech anyone dry of it, you can burn people with it, blow them up, same for aliens.
Something among these lines?

Alot of people say judgement day will come in 2012.

The Maya Culture I think believes that the calendar will end on the year 2012 and thats that. Thats 4 more years folks.

According to their calendar, the Maya believed that their world would end on Dec 21, 2012. Of all the dates put forth by prophets and cultures for a doomsday, this is one with an authentic almost eerie feel to it. But what will happen? A global cataclysm is one possibility.

http://survive2012.com/

I am a little worried myself to tell you the truth. Look at all the wars there are around the world. You would by now have thought people would learn not to bomb and kill each other over greed and difference in opinions. Animals are going extinct the world population is increasing, global warming etc etc.

We'll die when the oil runs out.

OR

When the Islamic fascists get nuclear weapons.

OR

When douse ourselves in gasoline and light ourselves on fire like those Buddhist monks in Vietnam.

OR

When the aliens invade this planet.

OR

When China kills us all.

OR

When we all die of massive outbreaks of STDs.

OR

When God decides to shake the Etch-a-Sketch and start a new.

OR

And the list goes on and on and on and on and on............

Until then, enjoy your prehistoric plant matter turned into black gold, having lots of unprotected sex and shaving your pubic hair off to help spread more STDs (including staff infections), and setting ourselves on fire for cake my friends. Oh and have a PC (political correct) new year!

Seriously though, I hope there is a dumbass rapture before the real rapture. At least then you'll know that all the idiots are dealt with first. All you need to do is hear the "Dee-dee-dee" sound, and it's done.

A white dwarf is hotter than a red giant, but is formed after a red giant. White dwarfs, the eventually fate of our own star, are the ends products of stable stars. Our sun is a stable star. A white dwarf eventually burns out and becomes a black dwarf.
What we don't really want is a gamma burst in the galaxy. The biggest explosions in nature they are from Hypernova or when neutron stars or black holes collide. They give off a huge amount of radiation and if one did happen in our galaxy it would effectively sterlise the hole galaxy until complex amino acids can reform and start life again. There is a hubble picture of one taken about 12.5 billion light years away.

Does anyone remember the Fundamental Latter Day Saints (FLDS) fiasco? They thought that the end of the world was I believe, and correct me if I'm wrong, April 6, 2005. Boy were they off!

Anyways, I'm leaning towards a more scientific reason for our doom. We'll all die from something, lack of water perhaps, then a couple billion years later the earth will follow after the sun "swallows" it. In the mean time, a galaxy far away will contain a planet just entering the phase of life. The planet will be called "Mitsuo". It will have a 1000:1 ratio of very attractive women to men. It will be a cycle of life and death. It will never end........Who knows....

If that's not it, then it will probably be the repeat episodes of Frazier and I Love Lucy that will do us in.

I was watching a show a while back that was counting down the top ten ways humanity is probably going to go out....cheeful I know.
Anyways, it was a while back but I think it was something like....

>disease
>meteor
>famine
>super volcano
>nuclear explosion
>pandemic
>climate catastrophe
>black hole
>over population
>natural extinction

(Not actually in that order)

scorpion da black
Jan 6, 2008, 18:31
yes a super volcano is likely to erupt in a hundred years..that is what i heard in national geographic's documentry.that would suck...
that means in a hundred years you cam expect earth to be toxic

Mycernius
Jan 6, 2008, 19:02
Believe me or not... but that actually scared me like hell. What is the likeliness of that happening?
Not very much. Most gamma bursts originate from the earlier phase of the universe. Neutron stars are only a couple of miles across and black holes are about as big, unless you talk obout the ones at the centres of Galaxies, so the chance of them actually hitting each other is quite rare. Hypernovae occur in really massive stars, and most of them vanished almost 12 billion years ago, as the where the first generation stars in the universe. Our star is thought to be at least third generation and was formed in a less chaotic time. Also if one did happen the other side of the galaxy it would take over
60 000 years to reach us. Speed of light and all that jazz.
We should really take servral things into account when talking about the end of the world. Most people usually say it only refering to mankind. A supervolcano or a comet hitting the earth might wipe out humans, but past history has shown that life recovers. Even climate change will not end life on the planet. There was more carbon dioxide in the atmosphere 65 million years ago than there is today. The melting of the ice-capes is hardly a world ending event, after all 150 million years ago there was a jungle in antartica and no permanent ice-caps. Plus the fact that the planet is still coming out of one of its cold phases. Not even a neuclaer war would wipe out all life. Species of insects, cockcroches first come to mind, can happily live in radiation levels that would kill humans.
If the world was to really end it would either come from some phyicist creating a black hole on earth; a remarkable difficult thing to do. Micro black holes have a very short life span and is probably about all we could do just to create one of them; or from an extra-terrestial source (not aliens), but things such as gamma ray bursts, a passing planetiod of the size of the moon hitting us, the sun going bang (very unlikely, it is very stable star) a violent increase in solar winds, and we are talking very violent, or the natural end of our solar system as the sun slowly expands out to be a red gaint (in several billion years time)
