I hope this is the right place to post this, I didn't really know what it would fall under, but I suppose gardening is an art form?

Several years ago I purchased a willow tree from a nursery here in the US. Neither the nursery I got it from or an arborist I asked about it could really tell me much about it except that it was a dwarf form of Salix babylonica called 'Rokkakudo'. It was suposedly exported to Japan from Korea at the same time as porcelain technology.

I've done google searches in Japanese for @Zp and some nice pics come up, but I've not really been able to find out how old that tree is and how tall it is.

I was wondering if anyone has ever been to Kyoto and seen the tree to know its height and spread?

My tree is around 5 years old now and still just nearly 7 ft tall.

I recently did a trade for some plants with an Assistant Professor of Forest Pathology who teaches dendrology. One variety I traded with him for is Salix 'Yatsubusa'. It's supposed to be another dwarf willow. We were both wondering if maybe it's a synonym for the 'Rokkakudo' willow? I've searched for cuT, but found nothing.

Don't know if any of you here are gardeners or not, but I was hoping maybe you've seen either of these plant names before or at least seen the 'Rokkakudo' willow in Kyoto to know its approximate height? My guess from the pics is about 20 ft, but not sure.

Hopefully I can figure out how much room 'Yatsubusa' will require in my garden. Neither I nor the guy I traded with knows its ultimate size. Maybe I can take a guess based on 'Rokkakudo' if I knew its ultimate size.
Thanks!

Hi!

I'm sure there are some members living in the Kyoto area, but here's my two yen:

According to this link (http://www.biology.tohoku.ac.jp/garden/plantlist/salix/list-salix.html), the name of the variety (from Salix babylonica) is:
var. lavallei Dode forma rokkaku Kimura
ロッカクヤナギ ロッカク

Photos of Rokkaku-yanagi in Kyoto:

The bare tree is the Rokkaku willow:

The famous willows (Shidare-yanagi) of Ginza's Yanagi-dori are reportedly descendants of the Rokkaku willow:

Thank you! That does help. It and Yatsubusa must be different varieties then since no mention of it is made.

That photo of the street trees helps too. They look tall, but not so wide (small footprint). More columnar. Maybe because young trees grow tall and old trees grow wide and the one at Rokkakudo is older?

I notice that it looks like some are staked for support too. Large trees to be staking. Maybe it's just not age that the old specimen is staked. Maybe just lack of wood density... possibly the same reason mine doesn't harden off completely before winter and I get so much twig damage.

Either way, it looks as though I have my Rokkakudo in a good spot and I should probably play it safe and do the same for Yatsubusa.

You've given me some thoughts to ponder. Thanks again!
