Hello,

I need some help with a poem translation- my dad bought a sake cup from the war, and he's been nagging me to "translate" the inscription, simply not getting that my level of Japanese at this point = elementary school, barely, if even that far. :relief:

So if you could please help me figure out the poem (kanji and or romanji + translation), that'd be great, because he's not thrusting the translation he was given. :(

Here are the pictures of the poem inscription on the cup:

i176.photobucket.com/albums/w166/Tahiel/sakecup/P1010011.jpg
i176.photobucket.com/albums/w166/Tahiel/sakecup/P1010005.jpg

I think those ones show it pretty well. Please let me know if you can't make out something and I will try to get more details.

I'm fairly sure that the kanji here: i176.photobucket.com/albums/w166/Tahiel/sakecup/P1010012.jpg is 大「おおき」? And then I recognize 心「こころ」をくとはば。 But it doesn't make much sense to me.
And on the other part I recognize 日「ひ」に にほふ 山「やま」 (something) 花( ヘな)。

So what I'm getting is something like:

(something something) の (something) 大 (something) 心をくとはば。
(something that's great/heavy in many hearts?)
日に にほふ 山 (something) 花。
(something about one day and flowers and mountains?)

:bluush:

You can see why I need the help. XD
Thanks to anyone who can offer assistance!

original: 敷島の大和心を人とはば朝日ににほふ山桜花
contemporary kana usage: 敷島の大和心を人問わば朝日に匂う山桜花
hiragana: しきしまのやまとごころをひととわば あさひににおうやまざくらばな
romaji: Shikishima no yamatogokoro wo hito towaba asahi ni niou yamazakurabana

日本の心とは何かと人に聞かれれば、朝日に(照らされ て)香る山桜の花だ(と私は答える)
If someone ask me what the heart of Japan is, I will answer that that is fragrant mountain cherry blossoms shown by the morning light.
NOTE:
敷島の is the Makurakotoba(枕詞) modifing 大和, a kind of set phrase, no meaning.

That's a wellknown Waka(和歌) by Motoori Norinaga(本居宣長).
