Hey all!
I'm new to the forum, but I'm pretty much the same as everyone else. I'm applying for the Monbusho as a research student next year. I was hoping someone could help me answer a question (or two)!
How do I get a letter of admission? I heard that it impresses the embassy if you actually manage to get one earlier.
And how does GPA affect selection? I live in the USA and NOWHERE in the guidelines do they state a specific GPA requirement.
I'll work on upping my GPA, but unfortunately the due date is before next quarter's grades come out. Will you be shot down immediately if you aren't a perfect 3.0 student? Or do they give every applicant the opportunity to take the preliminary tests?

I don't know if GPA really affects the outcome since a classmate of mine was rejected with a GPA of 3.5 ...
For the rest I'd rather let more experienced people answer.
GPA is not the most important thing in the selection. It"s more important to convince them that you are the right guy for the scholarship and that you can adapt to a life in Japan.
For the letter of acceptance contact as many teachers and universities you can that have your field of specialisation in order to get it. I can t judge for you but is better to contact also other universities then Tokyo or OSaka. There are many aplicants there and you might find difficult to be accepted. In my country the letter of acceptance was not to impress somene, we had to get it in a month from the moment they told us we past the interview. We had no other choice therefore all who got in Japan from my country had this letter and a teacher.
You might find difficult to get this letter before you have a clear answer from the embassey many universities give you a letter of acceptence only after you pased the Embassey exam.
Good luck

here they decide the minimum GPA that can apply is 3.0 / 4. but i think passing the english exam and the interview is the main step

I just got nominated by Kyushu University for a Monbusho scholarship in October of 2008, which means that barring a calamity I've got it (they have 10 set aside for the specific program I'm entering).
My GPA was pretty good, but like the above posters noted its not the most important factor. For Kyushu at least the biggest factor was submitting a quality research proposal that they felt was well suited to the program. I also had to go through a lengthy interview process with Professors at Kyushu before they would nominate me and I also submitted letters of reference from profs and the Dean of my University in Canada.
I think there are different processes people go through. In my case I got accepted into the program at Kyushu University first and then the University nominated me for the scholarship.

Dude, call your embassy, that sounds like a case where you may benefit from talking to a human being.
