It seems Dreamworks have bought the rights to make a live action Ghost in the Shell film

What do you think? The article discribes a Blade Runner type of film. Could be good, but Hollywood has got a history of screwing things up.

I vaguely remember watching the anime when it was released on video.

I, too, have been in the past dissapointed by those hollywood adaptations of books/films/animes/theme park attractions. Then again, it's not like we have any real money invested in such projects. All we could lose is 300 yen for the DVD rental unless you splurge and go see it in the theater. I am sure you will at least have an OK time ejoying / tearing apart the movie that is worth 300 yen.

BTW, the link did not work for me. Does it mention if any producers/directors/actors are attached to the project?

The link didn't work for me, either.

I would have higher hopes if Pixar had made the movie rather than Dreamworks, as I tend to find Pixar films to be of higher caliber in general. Even so, I don't have high hopes for an American adaptation of Japanese pop culture. We all remember Godzilla (http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/godzilla/), right?

A GITS movie would be cool! But only if they stick to the GITS storyline + don't have a sucky script + actors. Let's hope it'll be good! :)

I don't want to sound skeptical, but I have my doubts as well. Hollywood's track record when it comes to adapting live action Japanese properties into American movies (The Ring, The Grudge, Pulse, One Missed Call) isn't all that great, and the past horrors of Street Fighter and Super Mario Brothers still lingers, so I'm not sure if GITS can be made to work.
