Hello mina-san!
I saw this page (http://www.jnto.go.jp/eng/indepth/featuredarticles/worldheritage/c_4_nikko.html) on the temples and shrines of Nikko and was wondering if anyone on the forum has been here. If so, How was it? Would you recommend seeing it?
It certainly looks beautiful, especially that bridge!

Hello Luke,
I spent a lot of time as a child in Nikko. Not just the Shinkyo-Bridge but all the sites in the area are worth seeing. Especially, Nikko Toshogu Temple is out of this world. If you go, DO visit the Kegon Fall, too. Nikko is REALLY beautiful in the fall with the foliage turning bright red and yellow but I also love Nikko in the summer with the breathtaking contrast between the clear water and the vivid green of the trees. There is also a beautiful lake nearby called the Lake Chuzenji.

The bridge is nothing, really - the main temple complex is the place to go. But it's really a love-hate place: Some people love it, some people hate it. Sadly I lean towards the latter - it's really gaudy, lots of gold plating and color mismatches - Impressive but tasteless. But as I say, some people love it, so go and find out.
Also, there are some natural areas near by (with a waterfall, if I remember rightly) - I've heard these are good, but have never been there myself.

It's only about an hour up the road from me. I've been to the main temple a couple of times but have never seen the bridge. I'll have to go check it out, and take in the waterfall while I'm at it.

I remember getting off Mitaka station and from there, you'll see signs leading to the museum, you can walk it there, or catch the "Cat Bus" near the station. Also, you have to pre-purchase the tickets.
they are selling tickets outside japan..online i think.. be sure to visit Harajuku on sundays ;)

Sorry to return the thread to Nikko....is it a big day trip from Tokyo: can you see the waterfall and lake AND the temples in one day?? Or is it better to overnight, given the time needed to travel from Shinagawa for example.
And PS: Harajuku is AMAZING on a Sunday, (the girls are really fun, and EXPECT to be photographed) but don't just stop at Harajuku: we went to the Meiji Shrine on the Sunday as well and were treated to the most beautiful bridal precessions......just stunning, as well as the superb shrine itself, and gardens...

Yes, it is perfectly do-able in a day.

Yes. You could also take the TOBU Railway from Asakusa straight to Nikko. I think it is a lot cheaper and only takes about 15 min. longer than using the Shinkansen. Oh, wait, you have a pass. Never mind.
I hope you will enjoy Nikko!

Domo arigato gozaimashite!!!!
I personally don't think Nikko is really do-able in 1 day. We spent 2 1/2 days there and would've liked another day. Didn't have time to see Lake Chuzenji. Although our goal was just to chill out and visit somewhere in the country. If all you want to do is see 3 temples and buy a souvenir, then I guess you could do it in a day.
It's really beautiful though, and the town is amazing to walk around in.

If you are going to Nikko, you may want to experience onsen in "Kinugawa onsen (http://uchimizu-en.blogspot.com/2008/06/romantic-week-end-in-onsen.html)", a few minutes train from Nikko. It is a little bit mass-market, but a convenient and pretty way to experience japanese hot-springs.

Arigatou Uchimizu-san!
I'll be sure to go there! Your review certainly helped me understand more about onsen. :D
And the rest of your site seems useful too!
