Twisted asked for to you nominate the best Anime that you ever saw and I resolved to complement it with this enquiry about the best Manga.
Watsuki Nobuhiro's "Rurouni Kenshin" stills as my favorite.

I haven't reall read many Manga books. I read more of the Viz pulp graphic novels and even that is limited. It's pretty harsh at times and very violent, but I really like "Sanctuary" and "Strain" with art by the masterful Ryoichi Ikegami. I am not sure if I can name my fave Manga, but my fave artist is Ikegami. You really need to check out his attention to detail in some of the landscape drawings he does to know the upper end of magnificence in comic-book art

I find Ranma 1/2 both hilarious and entertaining to read.

Love Hina for me. It's the only long running manga I've completed in its entirety. Though a typical shounen-romance storyline, the character development was a strong factor.

Motoko Aoyama is good. Why else would I have this forum name. :)

Blade of the immortal and Rurouni Kenshin. :)

Vagabond is by far the best I know. I love Miyamoto Musashi, it's a great story.

Have you read the novel series too by the name "Miyamoto Musashi", Eiji Yoshikawa?

Also, Musashi also has a book out called "Go Rin no Wa" or "Book of 5 Rings".
It's Musashi's interpretation of his technique with a mixture of the classic milatary Arts of Sun Tzu.

:)

Yes, i read the novel, but it was a shortened german version. One day i'll try the japanese full version.

I've also seen the Mifune movies. They are really good, too. The "gorin no sho" is quite interesting, but i don't know anybody who understood the sword-technique part. I do Iaido and Aikido, but if you just read it it's very hard to understand.

Eiji Yoshikawa also wrote a niece piece on Toyotomi Hideyoshi. I think it shows the life in the sengoku period really good. Well, it's a novel.

Although I really did enjoy "Video Girl Ai", it recently was replaced on the top of my manga list by "Lone Wolf and Cub". Absolutely stunning...

I really did like Kenshin as well, though...

Yeah, Lone Wolf and Cub (or Okami) is really good. But it is more "art" than the usual manga-style, what makes it a little more difficult to read i think.

Ikegami... love it! I have a few manga issues of Crying Freeman and the artwork is beautiful.
But my favourite manga has to be Ghost In The Shell by Masamune Shirow. The guy doesn't just draw, he writes some of the best sci-fi covert-ops stories I have ever read.
On a merit note, the first manga I read and still love was Katsuhiro Otomo's Akira. The movie didn't made justice to it.

Inuyasha is great but it's almost identical to the anime, so there're no surprises. Rurouni Kenshi is a classic. Nah, I don't know, there so many great artwork that I can't nominate one.

Wait, wait! Just remembered, Crayon Shin-chan is the funniest manga ever :D

Holy ...

have you all been sleeping? (except nangi))Have any of you read the masterpiece of literature called "Nausicca and the Valley of the Wind"?
This one blew me away be the sheer scope of story, depth pf thought and feeling, and mastery of art. You will laugh, cry, and come out after reading it a changed person. I sh*t you not.

Oh yeah, Mugen no Junin (Blade of the Immortal) is pretty good too.
Love, Ben

Jun 11, 2003, 15:43
I read it in Japanese just a couple months ago. The sheer scope of it! It does a good job of dwarfing the movie and putting other Miyazaki movies in perspective... I found that Monoke Hime was very much in line with the Nausicaa manga. One could almost point out their counterparts... But I tend to agree with you that the scope of the anime/manga knowledge of several posters on this board is quite limited...

I love Nausicaa, H2, Touch (just watched it over again), and Love Hina. Some of them may be old titles; especially in Mr. Mitsuru Adachi's works that had been published in Shojo Comics since 1976.

Mr. Adachi have really captured the emotions and the fluctuating feelings that we humans have... He shows us that reality is harsh and not everything turns out as expected... Hmmm... Are there any other Mr. Adachi's fans out there? Or is it only me who is crazy about his work?

Having still to read many manga, I can still make a contribution to this topic:-

Mugen no Jyuunin- The artwork`s seemnigly calmed down a bit now, but it`s still very beautiful and the artist as his own great style.

Plus, I`m liking:-

Tenjyo Tenge- Also quite well drawn and seemingly ahs a plot for a fighting manga.

One Piece- You`ll probably call me a kid for this suggestion, and you`d be right. I don`t care, there`s something about it that for the first time in ages has got me intersted in something really popular.

Beck- A manga about the troubles and successes of a band is quite interesting for me and there aren`t many others out there.

Bleach- Again< maybe it`s artistic appreciation of the work, but as I intend to understand the story more and more I`m finding this series still enjoyable.

GTO- I think follks already know why.

That`s all for now.

Although I don't read a lot of manga...I'd have to say Dragon Knights (has a funny side to it, but gets serious later..still keeps some humor tho), Fushigi Yuugi (great plot, characters, good humor, etc) and Saiyuki (plot, charcters...etc [i love goku and hakkai] )
random quote:
"You're not my master!"
"Yes I am! I'm....in drag."
"How shameful..."
-Dragon Knights vol. 1

U have to read the manga to get that. It's halirous!

Battle Angel Alita, no contest. (known as jimu = Gun Dream in Japan) It's actually more popular in the West than it is in Japan.

I also like Fist of the North Star Master Edition, they did a really good job colorizing Tetsuo Hara's b/w artwork. Check it out!

I'm sure I haven't read a very large variety of titles compared to a lot of folks here, but I absolutely adore Love Hina. I didn't like the anime that much though and I have yet to finish the series. I've only read through volume 11.

I also like Chobits quite a bit, though I've only read two volumes. The titles in the U.S. Shonen Jump are really fun too, especially Naruto.

Oh!! I like it!
Too bad it's a short in storyline......

Are you talking about the anime? I was wondering because the manga is hardly a short in storyline. It's 21 volumes long and very deep! I love it! But, yes. The anime only covers the first two volumes of the manga. It's gets SOOOO much better. Especially when Lucifer and all the cool as Satans come around. I like alot of the angels too!

Oh, this may seem a little repeatitive but I love the Inuyasha Manga. Yes, much better versus the anime of it. I also have a certain longing and loving for Rurouni Kenshin. Been reading it on this one site that the guy translated the original.
