First off, I know how this probably sounds but I want to know if it is possible, and would like to find someone who I can email or chat with for some more questions.

Basically a friend and I are planning an adventure trip, right now we are debating over Newzealand and Japan, I would like to do Japan more so than Newzeland, for the culture. This adventure trip will consist of a boat ride to Japan from the United States, preferably to a northern or southern Japanese port.

After the boat ride, we will be hiking north to south, or south to north, through Japan. Off the beaten path, through the forests, stopping in towns only when neccissary and for supplies. So I am hoping that there might be someone from Japan, living in Japan, or with a better knowledge of Japan's laws and landscape.

We plan on hiking with backpacks full of essentials and survival equipment, and litterally going from point to point plotted off of a map, deciding which point is next as we go. So I am looking for different advice, again I would like to find someone who I can talk to through email or chat online with to get more details and ask questions as needed.

We Need
Realistic weather paterns for each area
Dangerous animals/insects
Land profiles of each area (what regions contain impassable mountains, rivers etc.)
Major sites (landscapes to see, shrines, historical areas etc.)
Costs of basic neccessities (rice, meat, waters knives, etc.)
Important laws (hunting, city, rural, etc.

Thats it for now, thank you to anyone who helps out as we would like to go with basic knowledge of these things, but also be at the point where everything is fresh and new.

Forget hunting or carrying knives. Not allowed without special permits that you are very unlikely to get. You sound like you are going to be a couple of mountain men. VERY strange!

Want a list of major things to see? Do your own research. How are we supposed to know your interests? Get a travel guide (Fodor, Lonely Planet, Boedeckker, etc.). Go to the www.lonelyplanet.com/thorntree discussion site and ask other travelers.

Weather patterns? Easily found online. When are you coming?

A boatride from the US will probably take, what, a month to get here. If you can afford that time, ok, but seems a waste to me if it's the final destination that matters.

Not to mention the fact that a boat ride from the U.S. is practically impossible to arrange these days and that if you do manage it somehow, you'll be shocked to find that it costs considerably more than airfare.

The days of travelling by tramp steamer are almost entirely gone.
