Increasing my odds of getting into university

I am currently trying to get into Asia Pacific University. This is my first time applying to a university overseas. Does any one have any pointers for increasing my changes of getting in?

What program are you pursuing?
Are you applying privately or pursuing a scholarship through MEXT?
