14-yr-old bus hijacker says he did it to cause trouble for his parents

NAGOYA —
Police arrested a boy Wednesday for hijacking a bus on the Tomei Expressway in Okazaki, Aichi Prefecture. Ten passengers and a driver were on the bus from Nagoya to Tokyo, operated by JR Tokai Bus Co, at the time, none of whom were injured in the incident, according to police.

The boy, who was in possession of two knives, told police he is a 14-year-old second grader at a junior high school in Ube, Yamaguchi Prefecture. He said he hijacked the bus in order to cause trouble to his parents, who had scolded him, according to police.

Police received an emergency call from the boy on his mobile phone at 1:10 p.m. saying, ‘‘I hijacked a bus.’’ After the bus stopped at the Miai rest area, police officers persuaded the boy to surrender and took him into custody on the spot at 1:56 p.m. for violation of the weapons control law and confinement.

The boy had threatened the driver with the knife, police said. He left home early Tuesday morning, prompting his family to ask police to search for him later in the day

Strange thing is that they are blaming the knife for these kind of things recently, and not the eduction, and how to raise kids nowadays.

Honestly, this all just boils down to upbringing.

While I agree in theory I know plenty of people from both sides of the tracks that were brought up in both so called broken homes and one's from stable homes that went in opposite directions in their lives.

Upbringing does play a major part in what we do in our lives I agree, but according to news reports about this kid he was one of those kids from the stable family environment and was also a good student as well.

What else is a 14 yr old kid going to say? What else has he said that hasnt been reported upon by the media? Of course people are going to want to try and find an explanation or justification for his actions but I would suggest that society and the education system here are to blame as well.

The Japan of today coddles kids, most kids dont know or are not forced to take responsibility for their action or inaction.

I think there is more to this story than is being or has been reported and we will never know all the facts.

I think i mean more along the lines of uprbringing on moral fibre...

to be able to teach what's right and wrong (and in this case downright uneccessary) is one of the key elements of parenthood i believe. Which is why i think something must have been off in this kids upringing :)

Moral fibre...the minimum we should give our children! (haha says a 17 year old)

But as you've said, there must be something more to this that we probably will never know. Alas we are left to ponder :p

Some parents will scold their kids without geting their message across. Parenting would be easy if all you had to do was punish them. You have to have an equal ammount of punishment and understanding by siting down and talking to your child.
