I noticed there's a lot of talk about Visual Kei and Jrock pops around here, but does anyone actually listen to (or know of for that matter) any Death Metal from Japan? I personally am a fan of death metal among others of the "extreme" persuasion (includes but not limited to: grindcore, deathcore, thrash, black metal, etc) but I've had not too much luck gaining access to bands from Japan even though I know they exist. What a tease!

How about Maximum the Hormone, they're a metal band I think.

I definitely applaud you for the effort, but I don't think Maximum the Hormone (such an interesting name) can be considered death metal. Though I do dig them, haha. Specifically their single 絶望ビリ(Zetsubou Billy) for some reason stands out to me.
An example of death metal from Japan that I can think of is Defiled. They're music is dark, heavy, sometimes chaotic but always rather tense.
I'd write a bit more in depth about the topic, but I'd rather wait till I notice an audience as there doesn't seem to be many (or any at all) folks around here who are into this kind of music :)

Gallhammer... but they're more black metal-ish, I think.

I'm not a death metal fan (at my age, who is??), but my son is, though he likes the European and American bands better.
Here are some Japanese death metal bands listed in Wikipedia:

Hope it helps! :relief:

The ones I like are Serpent and Blood Stain Child, both of the melodic death, and the latter has trance elements.
