Rain could fall in August, and yes bring siunglasses. It should be dry though as the wet season should have finished.

Raincoat or sunglasses? I'd skip the raincoat. An umbrella will do just fine. I was in Japan during August one time and it was generally sunny with high humidity (drink a lot of water and pack a lot of shorts).

The only rainstorm we got caught in was in Kyoto.

Umbrellas are not in short supply. Unless you have a fancy little collapsible model, you don't really need to bring one.

Exactly! Everybody there sells 'em and they're only about 500 yen.

You'll be pretty hot in a raincoat so no need to bring one for August travel. As others have mentioned, you can buy a cheap umbrella, usually available at any convenience store, if you find yourself caught in a rainstorm. Sunglasses are a good idea. Enjoy your travels!

I forgot to mention that you can get cheap umbrellas for 100yen.
A light spray jacket is better than a raincoat.
You'll be battling the humidity and that will be your biggest annoyance.

Just to add:

Bring plenty of underwear because of the sweat.

Maybe some baby powder or gold bond, you'll understand after a day of walking round in this humidity.
