I have heard so much about the Japanese not liking Americans, and I wanted to know--is it true?
If so--why?
If not--why would people make up something like that?
[I don't want to sound rude or anything--but I thought that this would be a good place to ask. I hope that I haven't offended anyone! >.<]
Despite what I view perceptions that I consider unintended racism based on ignorance, as well as sometimes justifiable hesitation due to the behavior of some dumbass visitors from other countries setting a bad example, you'll find your treated quite nicely in Japan. Most people are quite polite and will be very kind to you. It ALWAYS depends on the person of course, but the over all reception is very nice you'd find.
One thing I have found that there is sometimes a sense of not liking the actions of/and the US government, but liking American's just fine. Luckily there is this separation.
As for why people would make that up... what people? Where are you hearing about this? Who from? In what context?

I think Japan is quite neutral about USA.
But I think your source must be strange - I assume your source must be Korean.
In 2007 South Korea had a majority of 54 per cent with a negative view. However this negative view has dropped 16 points to 38 per cent this year while positive views have risen to 49 per cent. In 2006 South Koreans were also predominantly negative (44% positive, 53% negative).

So, please come to Japan to enjoy Japanese subculture.

Hey, Pocky Princess!
I agree with the other two. People here in Japan tend to be neutral to positive towards Americans. There's not prejudice against them as far as I know.
Oh, and by the way, even though this isn't my job any more, your signature picture is larger than the rules permit. Check out the forum rules and resize your signatures before any of the bigwigs notice!

Many Okinawans don't like Americans because of the military bases there. Same goes for shopkeepers and such near other bases.
Many people from MANY countries don't like Americans. I can understand why (and I'm American). It's not WWII history. It's the American holier-than-thou, greater-than-thou attitude. Speak AMERICAN, will ya? Geez.
But, as Emoni wrote, I'd also be interested in hearing the context of your secondhand news.

Thanks for clearing it up, and yeah, I can see why people wouldn't like Americans too. Honestly, I don't think that I could say I'm proud to be an American most of the time because of how rude and egotistical we actually are. =(

I think you are thinking TOO much. Ordinary Americans are well diciplined as far as I know.
But maybe some are not in the banking sector. :relief:

Maybe I am thinking a little too much.
But, after being to Washington DC, California, Texas, and some other places--like, the bigger places in the US--the people were just...horrible! People here in South Carolina aren't even that nice most of the time. It makes me sad. T.T [Whatever happened to Southern Hospitality?!]

Terrible people are existing everywhere. There are many terrible ones in Japan. But from my experience in USA, people are generally kind of course more in countryside.

Maybe I just have really bad luck when it comes to meeting new people! o.o'
Okay--well I heard it first from some people on the internet [Gaia, MySpace, and another forum that I used to go to a while back.] but I didn't believe it. Then we got some new students at school who are Japanese and a friend of mine asked them about it--since I was too shy and didn't want to offend. They said that it was true. [And they had actually moved here from Japan--I'm not sure where in Japan though. I'll ask them when school starts back if I see them around.] I don't really know though.
I suppose I just didn't want that going around in my head if it wasn't totally true.
Makes perfect sense if you've had those two situations that you would at least start to question if it is true in your mind. Pretty much it depends on the person, and it also depends on the question. Good you asked though, most people just don't.
