hello, I have recently learned to read & write hiragana & katakana, my question now is should i start learning grammar and vocabulary first, or basic kanji first? and can anyone recommend some good software for this, or books ofcourse, though i might have a hard time getting them since i live in holland

thanks :-)

I would recommend a textbook to give you some direction and also to keep learning new things, so you don't get too bogged down in grammar and vocab - grammar will start to come naturally after time and for vocab., you will pick up a reasonable amount without meaning to (depending how much Japanese stuff you read, watch, listen to, etc.).

I recommend Genki I & II and I suspect a few other people might. I think it's the standard textbook in UK universities. Good luck with your studies

Many books are good, but also try language lessons to listen to, like Pimsleur and japanesepod101.com.

Also, a book I like for general reference is Japanese Step by Step : An Innovative Approach to Speaking and Reading Japanese by Gene Nishi.
