Whenever I want to show my Japanese g/friend one of my non-Japanese language DVDs purchased outside Japan, there are of course no Japanese subtitles. More surprisingly, when I go online to search for a downloadable subtitle file, I can find just about every title I own in up to a dozen languages (including Korean) but NEVER Japanese. Why?
Most of these subtitles are uploaded to the net for altruistic reasons... somebody buys the DVD, rips the subtitles and uploads... or even translates the dialogue themselves and uploads. Many of these DVDs are available in Japan, and must have been bought by a considerable number of people. So I have 3 questions:
1) Is this spirit of altruism absent in Japan?
2) Are there really no repositories of Japanese subtitles on the net?
3) Could JREF help in some way (subtitle sharing for instance) ?
- of course the legality would have to be looked into.
