Hi! I'll be going to Japan for the first time next month, and I'm going to be on a budget.

Could you guys please recommend some cheap restaurants that you frequent? Any kind of cuisine is fine but I'm particularly looking for Thai, Indian and Japanese restaurants. I'm actually looking for your favorite haunts, those cheap, well-hidden places that actually offer good food...

Thanks so much!:-)

2000 yen a meal? You won't have a problem finding somewhere to eat on that. You can probably get under that for a whole day! You can get some traditional, tasty, and filling meals all over Tokyo for 700-1100 yen. Just about every restaurant has a menu/partial menu/display with prices so you can easily find what you want.

You can get ramen for around 700yen or cheaper just about anywhere. I remember getting ramen and some fried rice for 850yen.

Kaiten (conveyor belt) sushi are usually pretty cheap.

The combini (7-11, Lawsons etc) have ok food if you want something on the go. Also the basements of large malls have lots of variety of food you can pick up. Its nothing like the mall food courts we have here in the states.

And remember there is no tipping in Japan.

I recommend Ippudo (一風堂) and Ichiran (一蘭) for Ramen. About 800 yen for a bowl at either of these places.. they are chains and have shops around various places in Japan, but in my opinion they are very good!

Edit-- I don't know where Ippudo is in Tokyo but I know it exists there... there is an Ichiran near Shibuya station (not far from Hachiko, the bronze dog statue), and I guess there are others around town.
And for a little over 2000 yen you might even be able to get all you can eat Indian curry or something...

Just how "cheap" do you want? Since you're an American, you should be familiar with Kentucky Fried Chicken, McDonalds and Denny's. They're all in Japan. As mentioned before, Yoshinoya is also in Japan. Their menu is a little different than those in the U.S., but generally they're the same and cheap. I ate at Yoshinoya a lot during my last trip as I had to watch the cash flow towards the end of the trip.

In Hibiya Park in Tokyo, I treated a friend to lunch at a revolving sushi restaurant and the total tab for the both of us was about 2,900 yen. I thought that was reasonable.

On another trip, in Ueno in Tokyo, I ate at a sushi restaurant and they had a special for around 900 yen (roughly $8.00 and change).

Eating in Japan is not expensive, you just have to scout around.
