The "How do I get there?" Q & A Guide

Alright, since really asking the same questions in my head over and over is driving me nuts and seeking individual, unconnected answers is tedious and in some cases, less than helpful, I wanted to ask just what steps go into getting to Japan from another country, establishing residence, finding work, and actually living and adapting to Japan. It is (like many here) a goal to have lived in Japan or at least just get there to see it. I apologize in advance if there's topics like this or stab at individually related subjects, but I would like to have it summarized all in one as a sort of guide to anyone else looking.

Now let's tackle each of these on a step-by-step basis together.

1. Before we begin our journey!

2. What we'll need and we need to know.

3. Immigration? Tourism? How?

4. We're here! Now what?

5. Getting settled!

To better clarify what I'd like detailed is things we should do and learn before traveling, preparing for the trip, what we do once we're there, and lastly establishing one's self in the city if we're trying to immigrate.

I truly would appreciate the help in any way at all possible. This is important to me and my future as I wish to move there one day as some have. I hope also once when all the answers to my questions have been made, we can compile them into a complete guide for newbies to read through to help them out on their adventure to Japan! :wave:

This is just too big a topic for a single thread. Besides, as you have suspected, there are MANY threads already on each Q you have (some are still active, I think). Do searches and find those threads.

You're 19. What kind of job did you imagine you'd like? Where specifically in Japan did you think would be agreeable to you (population-wise, climate-wise, dialect-wise)?

Tons of reference info can already be had in the (gulp!) FAQ thread. Have you looked there yet? (3 stickies in this forum)

It is (like many here) a goal to have lived in Japan or at least just get there to see it.If you want to do the latter, come as a tourist. You need a passport, money, and time. Beyond that, any sense of planning is an individual effort. You can ask details on another forum at this site, or you could change sites to www.lonelyplanet.com/thorntree and look in the Japan section of the NorthEast Asia forum.

it seems to work better if you use the gray GOOGLE search bar above. Click on the dot next to Directory for FORUM and type in a generic search word you are after. That search works better than the SEARCH between NEW POSTS and QUICK LINKS. Good luck!
