View Full Version : What are your favorite Japanese movies?

Sgt. Wang
Sep 8, 2003, 08:07
I was just thinking to myself, 'hey we need a poll for the movies that we watch and love.' So here's my favorites;

I like scary movies. I don't know, it's just the feeling I get when I watch them. Sorta fun.

Favorite movies: Ringu, Kakashi, and Firefly Dreams (this movie isn't even in the same catagory as the others, I just like it the same:) )

What are any of your favorite types, and kinds of movies?

NB : You can order Japanese movies on the JREF Shop (http://www.jref.com/shop/), including most Akira Kurosawa's and Takeshi Kitano's.

Funny, here in Maine they always seem to have more Chinese movies then Japanese.

jeisan
Sep 9, 2003, 06:37

Sgt. Wang
Sep 9, 2003, 06:44
Yeah, it really shouldn't be hard to find, unless you live nowhere near a video store, 'cuz MtoM lives in Saudi Arabia.

Oh and yes, anime movies count.
Have you seen the Cowboy Bebop movie? That was cool as hell. And if you're a Rurouni Kenshin fan like me, I loved the 'Reflections.' But you have to see the series and 'Samurai X: Trust and Betrayal.' It's not for the squimish, or people who hate sad endings. Totally awesome.

I saw Rurouni Kenshin's OVA and Cowboy Bebop first 4 episodes

I recently saw 'The Voice' because someone in a different post told me I should. Wow. If there is any freaky movie, that would be it. It is the epitomy of scary. Freddy Krueger has nightmares about it. Maybe I'm exaggerating, but if you watch it late at night, you really get the creeps.

I thought Ringu was pretty scary. The plot and acting was smartly combined to make great Asian cinema. I dont see the need in the US making their own version since they already have people squandering their money on rubbish like Jeepers Creepers and Freddy Vs. Jason

Sgt. Wang

There's no way to get Japanese movies where I come from, so they only way to be able to watch them is the i-net, or ordering them
/me looks in her wallet.....emptiness.... (T.T)

some movies I like are:

Battle Royal, The Ring, Platonic Sex, Go, Takeshi Kitano's movies, Love Letter, Laundry, Bounce KoGals,...

I'm actually interested in seeing this film for various reasons. I would like see if Hollywood can't f*ck up a movie about the samurai. Secondly, I wanna see Tom stab people.

The only movie that I'm really looking forward to is the new Texas Chainsaw Massacre. Oh, and by the way, Underworld kinda sucked. If it had been set in the 17th century, it would have kicked ass. But in modern times...? It was really lacking in a lot of areas. The vampires acted just like cats and the lycanthropes...well, doggies.

battle royale is my fave fave fave film ever. but i love japanese cinema in general. Takeshi Kitano films in particular but also:
Ring trilogy
Rashamon
Sansho Dayo (sorry if japanese spelling is wrong!)
Ive already mentioned Takeshi Kitano but I'll mention him again! (especially Dolls and Kikujiro no natsu)
Akira
these are the ones that particularly spring to mind right now

Ive heard Grave of the Fireflies is amazing - anyone recommend it?

Sgt. Wang
Oct 14, 2003, 10:54
I assure you, the last samurai will get nothing correct, and it will totally suck. Hollywood does this.................

And by the way, he doesn't even look like a samurai,.........ever.:p

YESSS!!!!!!!!!!!! Finally a remake to do the first one justice! Even though people were getting killed, I laughed all the time.

Supposedly, word on the street is that Jessica Beal dies first. Dunno if this is true or not....

Oh and Underworld was a letdown, but I thought it was Cool as hell when she jumped off the tower, and hit the ground and kept walking. I wish I were cool. Or maybe just that I had a trench coat full of vampire thingys......................

naw, I'd do good just with a trench coat first.

I really enjoy all Takashi's films which are usually different from the last. "Happiness Of The Katakuris" is one of the funniest japanese musical comedy I've seen. Of course Audition and the rest of his horror and yakuza films are all worth seeing at least once. I rented "Pain" and "Bounce Ko Gal" recently from the Japanese video shop and I liked both of these films showing the underground sub-culture of japanese youth. Yeah, I also watch a lot of Drama on Fuji T.V.

I forgot to put a new favorite on my list. Just 3 weeks ago I watched Akira. I loved the twisted storyline and the screwed up characters. Good movie. You should see it.

Oh and MeiWAkU, I was kind of wondering the same thing. I don't really know what was disgusting about Ninja Scroll. And I'm not sure if it was a slam to anime. We have other movies listed that are anime. I love Rurouni Kenshin's OVA's and Akira, so it probably might not be about the anime thingy. And anime are movies. And Akira is rated R and is immensly serious, so I consider anime as movie titles. Plus it's easier to make Sci-Fi movies, and Fantasy movies in anime form.

Yeah. They skip all of the 'Empire' parts of the story that starts up in the wake of the first nuclear blast in tokyo. Which is at the end of the film. But they kinda cut and shut the ending of the film on. It misses biiig chunks of story about Akira and the other children. It shows Akira as Tetsuo and the empires lord. You dont see any of that in the film.

Seriously, if you like akira read the manga for sure! you wont be dissappointed, i'd even put money on it. ;)

Also, if you've only watched the U.S. dubbed version of akira, watch the japanese version with subtitles. Some of the dialogue is different. ;)

The Tetsuo films dont have anything to do with akira. They are live action films about a guy who has a weird metal fetish, or he see's a guy with a metal fetish ( i cant quite remember the details as i saw it years and years ago ).. basically he turns into a robo kinda guy in the end of the film. ...the film is about his transformation..well, thats what i remember.

From Imamura: Ballad of Narayama, Unagi, Vengeance is Mine

This may sound childish, but I loved the storyline of Spirited Away!:) It was so unique,..........and the art totally blew me away!!!! I don't think I've seen so much beauty in one movie, and if I had imagined any characters from that movie, they would look exactly like Miyazaki had made them. Here's my favorites, from top to bottom.

1.) The Seven Samurai
2.) Chushingura
3.) Onmyoji
4.) RAN
5.) Ringu

The first four are pretty much classics in my book, nothing else I've seen has come close. Ringu is pretty recent, at least compared to the others, but it's interesting and unique (and of course, scary). I've also seen the American version 'The Ring', which is very spiced up compared to the movie it originated from, but I still prefer the Ringu.

I still wish they made old-style, 4 hour long Japanese movies like they used to..All these new special effects and explosions in movies only entertain me for so long..Where's the content? The depth?

What do you think?

So,you must be a big fan of EVIL DEAD TRILOGY.
Evil Dead was the first film I saw.
I saw it when I was about 4year-old.
My dad likes horror and violent films, and when that film
came out on video in the rental shop,he rent it and said
"hey, you have to see this film cause it's brilliant!! "
When I finished watching it,I was like "Oh!! this is what I wanna do
in my future!!" Since then, my dream has been to become a film
director.
So,as I wrote in the other thread,I'm in Ireland to study about making

has 2 types of ending. Which do you prefer???

Grave of fireflys is quite a sad movie. It has a beautiful story, and it ends morbidly.

SUMMARY:
When their mother is killed in the firebombing of Tokyo near the end of World War II, teenage Seita and his little sister Setsuko are left on their own: their father is away, serving in the Imperial Navy. They both stay with an aunt, but she has little affection for them and resents the time and money they require. The two kids set up housekeeping in a cave by a stream, but their little resources are depleted, and Seita is reduced to stealing to feed his sister. Despite his efforts, she succumbs to malnutrition. Seita painfully makes his way back to the devastated city where he quietly dies in a crowded railway station.

Now that is a good movie. Morbid, but good nonetheless.

Of all Miyazaki films, "Grave of the Fireflies" is definately one of his best! The anime is soo deep, touching, sad and powerful. The film left a lump in my throat because it is soo sad, but also very realistic depicting the lives of ordinary Japanese during the war struggling for food in the last stages of the war. It is a piece of social history, and what I what I also like about the film is that we don't get to see the actual battles of the war, as we only follow the two kids and the people around them.

The original Godzilla has always been one of my faves. I read somewhere that it's supposed to return to theaters as 2004 is the 50th anniversary of its original release. I think it'll be shown uncut, in Japanese (with subtitles I believe) and, more importantly, WITHOUT Raymond Burr getting in the way! Should be way cool!!

1. The Seven Samurai
2. 24 Eyes ("24 no Hitomi")
3. Ikiru (even though it was so sad)
4. Yojimbo
5. Sanjuro
6. Tampopo
7. The Harp of Burma
8. Aiki (from 2003)

BLACK TIGHT KILLERS is an all time favorite movie of mine, period! I cannot recomend it enough.

Netflix is a great source for anyone in the US who doesn't have access to good Japanese movies locally.

I'm also going to give a shameless plug to a forum started by some friends of mine for people looking for rare movies & TV: http://www.aimoo.com/forum/freeboard.cfm?id=558917 Take a look.

I see very few people mention Kyoshi Kurosawa. His movies sometimes are truly amazing such as his "horrors" Cure, Pulse, Bright Future, S饌nce...

Other personal favorites are: Visitor Q, Audition, Kamikaze Taxi, Electric Dragon 80000 volts, Ring trilogy, Hana Bi, Zatoichi, Grave of the fireflies, Angel's Egg, Spirited away...

Definite number one: Eureka by Shinyi Aoyama

Worst movie: Battle Royale 2! as a japanese person aptly put: it makes me ashamed to be japanese...

~ Ju-on / The Grudge (I just bought Ju-on II but I haven't watched it yet)

film which I couldn't forget would be Akira Kurosawa's Dreams...Our school made us watch it way back 1991. I heard that Kyoshi is also a good film maker. Alas, I haven't the time yet to see one of his films though I am a huge fan of horror movies... :( Sad to say it's really hard to find Asian films in my city...

yeah they can be hard to find, no doubt about that. still though, kyoshi's movies do sometimes participate at festivals such at Cannes or at least get shown on indie film festivals...so they do get spread moreso than other equally good japanese directors like Sogo Ishii for instance...

so i don't know, don't give up hope yet :-)

Sogo Ishii? Hmmm...never heard but I'll try to find out..

Well, hope isn't dead for me... I know I'll find 'em good Asian films sooooon... Well, sometimes in my city some cinemas would feature Asian films but most of them are horror. I do like horror but I would also like to watch Asian fantasy films and Asian experimental films... :-)

Well Ishii is definitely experimental  I'm also a bit more partial to the experimental genre, they're just so damn hard to find. Movies like Eureka, Charisma, Kamikaze Taxi...I wonder if it's a coincedence they all star Koji Yakusho :D

same goes for horror i guess, not too crazy about hack n slash fests, much rather see something unsettling like Pulse or Dark Water or The Eye (though it's not japanese).

What do you mean specifically with fantasy films? you mean like Moon child or so? or just anime? :?

My current favourite are the Ju-on films, which is cheating - but each film adds to the whole Ju-on mythos, they refer to each other and are all set in the same house. Even the new American version will be set in the same Japanese house! Can't wait to see that this Halloween when it opens.

I've heard the actual house in the Ju-on films is in a suburb of Tokyo - has anyone found it? I'm coming to Japan soon and would love to take a photo of it!

I saw a cd titled Ju-on 3 being sold. Is there such because I've never heard of it?

actually i found you can get dvds here
http://www.battleroyaledvd.com

Don't go to that site, they are all bootlegs.

The top pic that I saw for BRII was from a boot that I bid on on ebay. I was new to ebay and didn't know that more illegal than legal goods filter through that site.

The BR disc I think 3rd one down with the tan cover is a bootleg of the Korean version of the SE 2 disc.

If you buy the bootlegs, you will be stuck with DVD-5 meaning compressed video. Also, you can't choose some options available with the legit releases such as subtitle options or sound options.

Here is a link to the legit versions I own. They are a few bucks more, but worth it, IMHO.

For the original Battle Royale :

http://www.dvdasian.com/cgi-bin/dvdasian/14535.html

While the subtitles in the new scenes they added leave much to be desired, you can still see what is said. Honestly, I don't think they really add that much to the film, so all I care about it the regular scenes where the subs are top notch. I wish that they used a different font as the Korean subs are crisp and clear, but the English seem a bit blocky. It is a Korean disc, but somehow managed not to be region coded. This will play in any DVD player. 2nd disc is not subbed at all in the special features like the Tartan UK PAL and NTSC versions are, but overall, I think the first disc is what most folks will go for and it has one of the best transfers I've seen. And it is DTS.

http://www.dvdasian.com/cgi-bin/dvdasian/16977.html

This is the Chinese version of BRII. Everything from the picture to the subtitles are excellent. It is also a legit release, not like those on Battleroyaledvd.com. It is a 2 disc set that has subs for the special features as well as the film on the first disc. It's encoded in DTS as well, which is nice. This is a region 3 disc, so you need a Pro Action Replay to run it on a PS2 or a region free DVD player.

Hope it helps.

I love alot of the Japanese horror films like Ju-On.
I loved the Japanese "The Ring".
I still think they ruined it when it was done here.
Also, they are making a "american version" of Ju-On.
Even if they have the director of Ju-On helping, it won't be good I just know it.

Personally, I don't think the Japanese make good movies. They are very good on making anime (on TV and movies), video games and their TV dramas
are quite good. But movies? The first time I spent money on a Japanese movie
was last year and I've been living here for a long time.

The movie was "Zatoichi", a Kitano Takeshi film. It was interesting but.....

blood,blood,blood. Lots of it.

They are scary. They are made very well. They make american horror films look like baby tapes.

Sgt. Wang
Jul 11, 2004, 08:39
Yeah, I can't say much for American horror films. They always have to have teenagers that die, girls that run slow and trip on nothing, have horrible dialogue, and even if they are scary, some large, glaring flaw ruins the film. I've given up on American horror. The only exception is Jonathon Demme's 'The Silence of the Lambs'. Even though movies that are based on books usually suck, this movie is the movie of all movies. I just love the Hannibal Lecter series.

Back to Japanese films, well, Cricket, I wouldn't say that about all Japanese films. Maybe you can rent a few DVD's for some nights, and then have your opinion changed. I know that we all can recommend something for you to watch.

Oh, I also enjoyed 2LDK. To me, it displayed a very dark side of the human psyche that is usually very hidden from view when it concerns Japanese people. These two girls were just violently brutal to eachother and I couldn't help but watch as they tried to kill eachother!

I hadn't been that shocked since I saw Battle Royale.

I Haven'ty seen a japanese maovie that I didn't like yet. On the other hand I haven't seen many different styles. My favorite? I can't say, last one I saw was Zatoichi which I really enjoyed. But I would like to find some good drama that doesn't involve violence, I love the kind but even in Oodishon where there is almost no vilolence the end had to be 'shocking', beautiful in my opinion. So if anyone knows of some good drama with a story that doesn't involve violence, I would greatly appreciate.

Legato, some films without violence that spring to mind right now are Dolls by Takeshi Kitano, which is a really beautiful film with some excellent cinematography and locales. Also, All About Lily Chou-Chou, is an excellent film. This is another visually great film, with a superb soundtrack. From what I remember there might be some minor violence...but I can't quite remember. If there is, it can't be too much if I can't remember it! :D

Also, Warm Water Under a Red Bridge, is a quirky little film. Not brilliant, but well worth a watch. And finally, Sansho Dayu is a truly heartbreaking film from the mid-50s and is one of the best films ever made in my opinion. I hope at least one of these fits the bill for ya!

I spend an unhealthy amount of time sitting around and watching weird Japanese films. Especially New Wave and art works.
These are some of my favorites:
All About Lily Chou-Chou, Nanami:First Inferno of Love, Gemini, The Emperors Naked Army Marches On, Electric Dragon 80,000 volts, Pastoral:To Die in the Country, Snake of June,Dead or Alive, Moonlight Whispers, Kanto Wanderer and of course, Akira.

Legato: Good drama with a story is pretty much everywhere in cinema. Jovial_Jon was on point to suggest the fantastic All About Lily Chou-Chou however there is a decent amount of violence but it is not sadistic like Blue Spring or Battle Royale. I think you should actually look into a Korean film called Spring, Summer, Fall, Winter...and Spring. It is a beautiful piece that meditates on the nature of violence without actually showing it. The director is one of my favorites and also did The Isle (Seom) which was slightly more popular.

Heh, what can I say? Truth be told, I love listing and ordering things, so it wasn't that big of a deal. ^.^ Time consuming, yeah, but I was off work today, and had nothing better to do while on the internet.

I think I remember in the course of my movie listing that someone mentioned a chinese movie called The Eye. Well, I watched it last night (or, well...this morning, heh), and just wanted to say that I really liked it!

At first I found myself wishing that the movie was more about her getting her sight back, because I found the whole psychology thing with the doctor really interesting, but the ghost in the caligraphy room got my attention well enough. :p And the big accident at the end was sad...

Agree!! Although "The Eye" isn't a Japanese movie, I liked it too!

I also have "The Eye II" on DVD, which is also very scary, however, it is NOT a sequal to the original, I don't know why it is called "The Eye", as the plot is totally different from the first one, but I guess it is because it was directed by the Pang brothers (again).....I really liked "The Eye II", as it was very scary, and the plot was good too....

Well, my list of Japanese movies is pathetically small compared to Japanamaniac's, but her it is anyway:

Destroy All Monsters
Godzilla
Ju-on
Millennium Actress (anime)
Perfect Blue (anime)
Princess Blade
Ringu
Ringu 2
Rodan
Spirited Away (anime)
Tomie
Tomie: Another Face
Tomie: Forbidden Fruit
Tomie: Rebirth
Tomie: Replay
Uzumaki
Zero Woman
Zero Woman: Assassin Lovers
Zero Woman: Dangerous Game
Zero Woman: Final Mission

Now, here's one I'm sure very few, if not any of you ever heard of: Call Girl, starring Mie of Pink Lady (the one on the left in the avatar pic). It came out in 1982, little over a year after Pink Lady broke up, in the movie, Mie played a hooker who, according the plot, sold herself for money to rescue her lover from bad guys.

Basically it's a soft porn flick (not much nudity, but a fair amount of moaning in bedroom scenes) with Mie's character hopping in the sack with nearly half a dozen guys. Quite a stunning turnaround from one half of the famously wholesome pop act that captivated Japan in the late 70's. I was lucky enough to get a dub of a dub on tape from a friend in Hong Kong a few years ago.

As far as I know, Call Girl has never been re-released on DVD (I've joked with PL fans that an embarrassed Mie bought the master and burned it! HA!), so I don't know if it can be found anywhere, not even online. I'd love it if did, complete with English subtitles so I could follow the story better!

In Australia, SBS showed a japanese movie called 'Monday'. It's about a guy who got drunk in a Yakuza building..and he can't get out of the building because he's drunk(and the yakuza members wont let him escape.)..Then, one of the Yakuza member invited him to drink man to man in a room. The guy found a shotgun inside a locker and shot the Yakuza.

He ended up in the hotel. He doesn't remember anything until he watched the news , about him being a wanted man.

Quite like it.. ^^;; it's funny, the ending sucks though.

Also, i watched a 'J-rock' movie. I dont know the title but the main character are called 'Guitar wolf'. They fight Zombies and Aliens..

Anyone heard of it? ^^;

Well, Miss A., your list is much more impressive than mine, but then, I'm only just starting out. In the anime category, forgot to mention that I have the following:

Ghost in the Shell
Ghost in the Shell: Innocence
Perfect Blue

As for horror, while the Tomie series is hardly the last word in Japanese horror films, it appealed to me from day one since it's unlike anything I've ever seen before. The idea of a malevolent teenage girl who keeps coming back to life after being murdered to kill and terrorize people did her wrong was pretty novel to me. I mentioned in another post that I'm surprised Hollywood hasn't snatched up Tomie to remake like they had Ringu and Ju-on as the teen slasher aspect alone would appeal to Hollywood types!

in fact I saw a lot of movies, but the one I like most is not completely japanese, I mean the last samurai. I really appreciate the soul of the samurai , how great they are.
but regarding totally japanese movies, I liked nurse station, which was a very nice comedy movie

Yes, I must admit I do have a big collection of Japanese dvds...I also have Chinese and Korean horror films too (which I didn't mention in my list).

About the Tomie films:
I only have one Tomie-film, which is "Forbidden Fruit", and I did enjoy watching it, however, I didn't find it scary at all - I found it funny, as I haven't seen any film like it.
The reason I haven't purchased the other Tomie-films is a simple one: I didn't like the reviews and some acquaintances told me not to purchase them..
What do you think of the other Tomie-films Jeff? Do you really recommend them? Maybe I should revise my thoughts about the Tomie-films? Or?

Well, I had read the original manga (which is damn hard to find these days, don't ask why) and found it gory, violent and scary, that was what attracted me to the first movie. Tomie was moody, violent and blood splattered, I guess that the quirky nature of it all was what attracted me to it in the first place. It wasn't as scary as the manga, but it had its moments.

As for recommendations, perhaps you should start with the first movie which I thought was the best of the lot while I thought that "Forbidden Fruit" was easily the weakest of the bunch. The fourth installment, "Another Face" was an analogy with three vignettes of Tomie at her malevolent, seducing best. Like I said, the series is nowhere near as great as Ringu, but I found it enjoyable for the eerie sort of atmosphere they all had. But then, I'm weird, so perhaps my taste is seriously lacking!

At the very least, check out the first movie. After that, you can form your own opinion on the rest of the series. Hopefully, that was of some help to you.

The pleasure was all mine, Miss A. I look forward to your opinion on Tomie which I kinda equate to some of the wacky cult horror movie favorites here in the States. But that's just my opinion!
