View Full Version : verb+tai
konnichiwa,
i just have a quick question that I'm not 100% sure about.
When using a verb+tai, do you need desu after it? (Or formally, should you have it?)
tabetai desu.
or
tabetai.
ikitai desu.
or
ikitai.
arigatou minna-san.

食べたい。 (tabetai) = I want to eat. [informal]
食べたいです。 (tabetai desu.) = I want to eat. [formal]
So, basically as Jericho Desu said, use です (desu) in formal situations.
Think of it as an -i adjective (I'm not sure if it's actually considered an adjective in Japanese, but I know it acts like one). When an -- adjective has です (desu), it's formal. When it's just the adjective, it's informal.

And "minna" with the "san" drops an "n" to become Arigatou, minasan. (I know, I know...it's confusing... ;-))
Ohh, i didn't know that Elizabeth. I was wondering myself before why sometimes it was minna and sometimes mina too. Thanks for that!
Been studying Japanese at uni for 7 weeks now, still a long way to go.
