Hey Everyone! Thank you for the help last time with my email, I had left for Tokyo soon after posting that so i wasnt really even able to say thanks before I left :)

I have a reading project that i've skimmed over just now...I think I understand the gist of the passage but I want to make sure I have the details right...so I want to do a translation of this passage here.

いまの膿科学的な仮説によれば、記憶は海馬というコンピューターのメモリにあたるようなところにまず一時保 存されて、その中で大事だと思った情報を側頭葉に転写して長期保存するという考え方が強くなっ て来ている。

According to the latest brain science hypothesis; The hippocampus is like the computer memory place of the brain where memories hit and are then saved for one hour. Out of those memories, the most important are transferred to the temporal lobe where they are stored permanently. People that have considered this theory are becoming more prevalent (tsuyoku = stronger I know but i think it would sound kinda weird).

だから、海馬というのは非常に部分だが、記憶の入力に大きな影響をもつ。

Thats why the hippocampus is an extremely small part but it has a huge affect on the entry of memories into the brain.

このため、最近は海馬が縮んでると記憶が非常に悪くなるということが言われているのだ。
Its been said that due to this, if the hippocampus has shrunk then memorising becomes progressively worse.

つまり何十年もまえの古いことを覚えていても朝食で何を食べたか思い出せないというようなこと が起こる。
In other words, even though memories of ten years ago can be remembered, what a person has eaten for breakfast it seems cannot be remembered. (I'm not sure what the purpose of 起こる is).

ただ、海馬というものは記憶の入り口としては大切な部位だが、記憶そのものの場ではない。

The hippocampus itself out of all the entry points of the brain is the most important but the ability to memorise itself is not there. (???? I understand this kind of but I'm not really sure how to translate it properly).

だから、仮に海馬が脳梗塞や脳腫瘍などの病気でやられたとしても、これまでのことは覚えている 。

Thats why even if the hippocampus has a disease such as a cerebral infarction or a brain tumour, old memories are still remembered but remembering new memories becomes poor.

ところでもうひとつ膿科学的に解明されつつある点にふれておこう。
But a scientific soltution has been found (??? Help! I'm not so sure what ~されつつある is meant to mean...I'm not sure if this sentence is correct.).

それは、海馬というものは、あれ情報を三十日までは溜め込んでおき、それと同じ情報が入ってくると、「これ は大事な情報だ」と自動詞k別して大脳皮質に移すという仮説が立てられているのだ。

That is, a long standing hypothesis that the brain stores information for up to 30 days and if the same information enters the brain, it automatically finds the important information and then it is projected into the cerebral cortex. (again I'm not sure if i'm right here! I have no idea about brain science!).

だとすれば、勉強したあとに復習するということが大事だということがわかるわけだ。
If this is the case then after studying, revision is extremely important.

復習の大切さは、いわば当たり前のことのように言われていたわけだが、膿科学的にもそれが立証されたという ことができる。

The importance of revision, so to speak seems natural but even scientific theories must be able to be proven.

Yes, I think you understood it well :cool: , so just some small things....

記憶は海馬というコンピューターのメモリにあたるようなところにまず一時保存されて、

~にあたる=相当する: corresponding , equivalent to ~
一時: for a short time of period
Memories are saved temporarily at the hippocampus which is equivalent to the memory in computer, then

つまり何十年もまえの古いことを覚えていても朝食で何を食べたか思い出せないというようなこと が起こる。
In other words, even though memories of ten years ago can be remembered, what a person has eaten for breakfast it seems cannot be remembered. (I'm not sure what the purpose of 起こる is).

起こる is predicate of 「つまり・・・というようなこと」
Such a case happens that one can remember the event of decades ago but cannot remember what he ate for breakfast today.

The hippocampus is important as the entry points for memories, however, it is not the place for the memory itself. (I think that "the place for" in this context is a place for storage.)

Thats why even if the hippocampus has a disease such as a cerebral infarction or a brain tumour, old memories are still remembered but remembering new memories becomes poor.


Therefore, even if the hippocampus was damaged by a disease such as cerebral infarction or brain tumor, one can still recall what has happened before.

ところでもうひとつ脳科学的に解明されつつある点にふれておこう。

ふれる in this context mean "to mention".
I would like to mention another point which is being elucidated by brain science.

それは、海馬というものは、ある情報を三十日までは溜め込んでおき、それと同じ情報が入ってくると、「これ は大事な情報だ」と自動識別して大脳皮質に移すという仮説が立てられているのだ。
That is, a long standing hypothesis that the brain stores information for up to 30 days and if the same information enters the brain, it automatically finds the important information and then it is projected into the cerebral cortex. (again I'm not sure if i'm right here! I have no idea about brain science!).

(That is) a hypothesis is being formulated that the hippocampus keeps certain information up to 30 days, and when it gets the same (similar) information, the hippocampus automatically decides that it is an important information and convey it to the cerebral cortex.

だとすれば、勉強したあとに復習するということが大事だということがわかるわけだ。
If this is the case then after studying, revision is extremely important.

If that is the case, it explains why the revision after studying is important.

復習の大切さは、いわば当たり前のことのように言われていたわけだが、脳科学的にもそれが立証されたという ことができる。

The importance of revision has been regarded as a matter of course/common practice, and now we can say that it was proved correct brain-scientifically.

I know it's just a typo, but please note brain is 脳 and 膿 is pus! ;-)
