Why is everyone like "OMG they are so kawaii!" Are they so kawaii? Is this because of the averaging effect of physical features? I've read somewhere that experiments of perceived beauty suggest that average is the most beautiful. Take a couple of faces (ordinary, or even less than appealing faces) and average them, and you get a shapely cut face staring at you.

The eye is in the beholder and the Japanese deffinately think they are more Kawai on a whole. My opinion, damm straight they are more kawai!

*facepalm*

Yeah, as a general rule halfbreeds of all races are more attractive.
The fact that they are half Japanese is just circumstantial.

"Average is Beautiful." Sounds like a Dove commercial.

"On the whole," aren't you making a generalization? I've met a lot of people of all sorts of backgrounds, and "half" certainly doesn't necessitate "cute." Sounds like someone is fishing for compliments.

I find the poll and the premise behind the thread repugnant.

Are you jealous?
Was that directed at me? I haven't been on this thread in a while.
Well, if it was ... no, I'm half myself (black, white, and native) .... thrice, actually.

That's right, fear my perfectly proportioned face.

I love that, MadameP!! :bravo:

I think we no longer live in an age of being half-this or half that, there are so many people these days who are 1/4, 1/8, 1/16, etc., of various ethnicities, esp. in North America. Even when limited to Japanese ethnicity, I've heard that people in California is having a hard time picking candidates in the annual Miss Nisei contest because there are so very few young women (with Japanese blood in their lineage) who "look" Japanese.

Even here in Tokyo, I meet just walking the streets in the city kids who have Filipino, Korean, Chinese and Caucasian mothers or fathers (with partners who are Japanese). It has become so common, I don't see what the fuss is about.

True that, when I lived in the US there was so many people that were 1/8 or 1/16 Native American. Even here, I've met several half Chinese or Japanese people or just see them on transit. One of the Asian guys I work with told me once he was half white, but you'd never know it to look at him though. Heck, I've come in on a few conversations at work where the guys were trying to guess my own ethnicity (the popular guess is usually Hispanic, though people have been known to think I'm Asian).
My point, and I guess your point as well, is who cares? Maybe in a place like Japan where mixed races are still not the norm but in N. America is pretty common. I think some people around the world would be surprised to find out how little others care about 'half this and half that'.

Imagine the following as polls:

What do you think of blacks?

1. They are good looking!
2. They are ugly!

What do you think of Hispanics?

1. They are good looking!
2. They are ugly!

What sort of reception do you think such threads would receive? This poll is equally as repugnant as either of those would be and I am disappointed that there are those who fail to recognize that and dignify it by taking it seriously.

What do you think of Pakistanis?

1. They are cute!
2. They are ugly!

(How on earth did this thread get re-opened?)

What do you think of whites?

1. They are cute!
2. They are ugly!

(There was a thread complaining about it, and this thread was reopened as a result.)

With its shallow racist repugnancy intact, no less. I can't tell you how disheartening this is.

There could be an interesting discussion about why people perceive certain things (in the human appearance) to be 'beautiful' or 'ugly' (regardless of what race they are) though.

Although I have a kind of geeky interest in the science of visual perception, so maybe I'm just... a geek. :bluush:
