Physically, you are somewhere on this planet, into the ground, to the sea, or to a coffin..
I mean spiritually.

I think existence continues after death, but I think it will be in a way that we can't get our heads round - I don't think it will be like 'reincarnation' into an animal, or like human life as we know it now... I don't think there will be a 'heaven' like being as we are now but always happy, or harps and clouds etc... and I don't think of 'hell' like with fire and such... I do think existence continues but we can't imagine what it would be like.

In the ground, or up a chimney.

well,it depends...
if you belive in spirits you can imagine many things but you can not reach the answer by imagination..
As in my religion ( Islam ) it depends on what you did in your live so you may go to heaven or you may go to hell ( you may go to hell sounds funny lol ).

If we had the answer to where people go when they die then there wouldn't be any religious debate over it. Where people go is the grave or turned into ash. After that, I don't know what happens and I suspect no one does.

Of course this what will happen to the budy but what we mean is the spirit.

Yes I realize this. My answer was:

I would say, I don't know. I mean of course physically our bodies just die and decompose and all that. But as far as spiritually, depending on whether you believe in a soul or not, I don't think it's impossible for some kind existence to continue after that, but also there's the possibility that there is nothing after we die.

But for me, it comes down to not knowing.

I've never been dead so I don't know, but I do know there is more going on then what we can see so something happening to our spirit after death is possible imo. However since what I believe is alot more vague and the options are too "black and white" I haven't voted, maybe there should be a "not sure" option or something.

How can a poll like this NOT have a "Don't know" option when that in itself tends to be the most logical (and honest) response?

I would like to hear what the OP thinks and along with the reason/s behind creating this thread/poll.

I have not voted for the same reason as Jericho's and Emoni's.

As it has been mentioned I have added a Don't know option. Too late for the OP to do it themselves now.

Thanks. Too bad I can't change my answer to don't know XD I expect it will start to race for the finish if that was possible.

Spiritually, I have no idea. My guess is that the "spirit" (which I believe to be a mere illusion--I do not believe in the 'self' per se) dissipates upon death and reforms in another combination somewhere.

Death is one of two things. Either it is annihilation, and the dead have no consciousness of anything; or, as we are told, it is really a change: a migration of the soul from one place to another.
– Socrates

Like so many (Socrates included) I do not know where we go after life, but it is my wish to join my forefathers and be welcomed. It is my greatest fear to be found wanting and cursed to wander alone forever.

Meh, when you're dead you're dead. Heaven is my idea of hell. Spending eternity with my loved ones? Sunday dinner is enough for me :souka:

You'll like this quote then
"I don't believe in an afterlife, so I don't have to spend my whole life fearing hell, or fearing heaven even more. For whatever the tortures of hell, I think the boredom of heaven would be even worse."

I have a serious and very deep belief as to what happens when we die, and it has been tested with quite a few experiences that psychologists love to dumb up with drugs.

I will, therefore stop at that and just say that the word "migration" was a very well selected word, and I will add it to my vocabulary. Thank you, Justin.

I think that people's souls become part of the energy that power the universe.

I know for a fact that I have know idea what happens to the soul.... if there is one. Perhaps our experiences and emotions live on as residual energy and we end up creating our own "afterlife", different from others. So we wouldn't be with any loved ones, we would just think we were. Or we haunt this website.

My Dad just told me that he's building a website to celebrate the centenary of my grandma's birth in October. She died in 1996. He's inviting anyone who knew her to post photos and anecdotes to commemorate her life.

Clearly, my grandma is still fondly remembered many years after her death, even though she achieved no great deeds and left behind no legacy other than the family who still mourn her. That's the only kind of afterlife I need to believe in.

I don't care where I go after I die.

But, that is the kind of afterlife I would like to have, too!
Your grandmother must have had a great life she lived to the full. :bravo:

I could write a thesis on this subject but, suffice it to say, I believe that our physical bodies or "shells", if you will, become nothing more than worm food or ashes if we are cremated. Like a snake sheds it's skin so does the soul when it leaves the physical plane and body. I believe the soul, or our "essence" is pure energy and just takes another form whatever that is and, since it is energy, it cannot be destroyed. It just takes another form in another dimension on another plane of existence.

Is this plane of existence, a heaven or hell as traditional religion teaches us? No, I seriously doubt it, but I do believe "we" continue in one form or another on whatever that plane or dimension may be and to date no one can say what it is or if it even exists.

If it doesn't exist and I am wrong in my beliefs, it will be nothing more than falling asleep and never awakening and I will never even know that I died or ceased to exist. However, based on much research and many studies done in the field of the afterlife and life after death with those who have claimed to "die" and have been resuscitated I cannot not believe that the soul does not continue on, but it is only a personal belief and nothing more as no one knows for sure regardless of what science or religion tells us. But, I would believe science over religion any day if I had to choose.

The physical body is what roots the soul or life force here into the 3rd dimension. Once it ceases to exist there is nothing keeping us here, like an ice cube melting into water vapor. So yes, it becomes worm food.

As a close family member of mine entered the later stages of death (cancer) they lost consciousness and just lay there. We had a reiki practitioner visiting at the time because it noticeably alleviated their suffering. As the family member advanced towards bodily death their energy began to exist at distances further and further away from the physical body. So that is, during normal practice the practitioners hands were held maybe 1cm from the body, but later on 2 or 3cm became necessary.

It's straight forward but anyone familiar with Reiki will know what I'm talking about.

The interesting question for me is kinda like this:

If our focus is grounded predominantly in the here and now, but exists elsewhere on levels and planes separate from the here and now, does their union after death create a really different form of consciousness compared to now?

For example sometimes when having a dream we 'feel' a certain way due to the circumstances of the dream. Fear, lust, confusion, anger, happiness, whatever, then upon waking we return to a more grounded 'clarity'.

So I wonder what kind of clarity and wholeness awaits on the other side?
