This may seem strange, but I'm currently doing research with a friend to study the early Pokemon phenomenon in relation to the many secrets and rumours that sprang up online and by word-of-mouth.
Our current focus are the "Pokegods", supposed secret Pokemon that could be obtained through near impossible means or simple coding glitches. They were obviously untrue, but played a large part in the continuation of the Pokemon franchise overseas, so our article is delving deep into the subject as of now.
Our curiosity has led us to ask if the Pokegods were an American invention, or if a similar concept existed in other, non-English, countries. Though European and South American nations are a good area to look into, our chief direction is that of Japan, where the franchise initially started.
My question to anyone interested in helping out is was there actually anything similar in Japan? Any fan sites established in the mid and late '90s that purported such rumours in Japanese would be extremely helpful, as well as any stories, rumours, or methods anyone can remember from memory.
Those that offer anything will be thanked and cited, and any information deeply appreciated. Thanks. :note:

Out of 39 browses, not one of you has both played Pokemon or heard of Pokegods?
