helo every one :p:p hope your all OK
now I was searching around the net found this info
there is a manga called The Miraculous Notebook by Shegiro Mizuki
The story of the one-shot revolves around a magical notebook: when a person's name is written on that notebook, the said person dies. Sounds familiar?

THE STORY of Miraculous Notebook
http://www.giantup.com/get-8-2009-Giantup_CoM_olxa37wi.jpg (http://www.giantup.com)

it talks about a 45 year old ordenary guy called Yamada and his co-workers makin fun of him all the time except one old miss treat him defferintly
on day one of yamada co workers saw him donating 1000 yen to a shrine when the old miss heard about it she went to yamada and asked him
so yamada tells the miss that one day while he was passing by the shrine he saw a notebook lying beside a dead man (the guy's death was reported on TV a day later)
and the man name was in the notebook with other names
yamada said that this notebook actualy works (by writing the person name and he would die) after he tested it on a dog
so he told the old miss he didnt have to worry about being poor
the miss borrowed the notebook after hearing the story

afterwards, Yamada's co-workers begin to die one after another. Yamada realizes what's going on, and how dangerous the notebook is when it falls into the wrong hands
Yamada takes the notebook back and uses it to kill Old Miss. Because Yamada feels resposible for all the death he had caused, he decides to write his name in the notebook to take his own life
then burns the notebook so no one else will be able to use it again.
Later Yamada is killed in an accident (around the same time the notebook is destroyed).

That does seem a bit too close to just be coincidence doesn't it!

That said, I wouldnt mind of the premise for death note was inspired by something previously written. What I love about Death Note is not necessarily the basis of the storyline (there is a notebook which kills people), but the fact that the character development and plot is carried out so well. The rivalry and tactics between L and Light was so well thought out and really kept you glued to the screen (I'm of course referring to the anime here, haven't had the pleasure of reading the manga yet!).

I see the comparison here is quite in parallel with the comparison of La Jetée and 12 Monkeys.

I don't know if any of you have seen 12 Monkeys, but in the special features on the DVD they say that the premise for 12 Monkeys was an experimental french film called La Jetée, which was about a post-apocalyptic world and time travel (in a very broad sense) and 12 Monkeys based its foundations and plot on this premise. But obviously 12 Monkeys did so much more, it looked at the relationship between Brad Pitt and Bruce Willis, the complications of time travel, added lots of twists and gave you a really immersive storyline. In this case, while it's base plot was essentially taken from La Jetée, it became something completely different after Terry Gilliam developed it.

I believe that the same has happened here. The base plot of Miraculous Notebook has been taken and used as a template for Death Note, but Tsugumi Ohba has developed it into something completely different.

Sorry, I always go off into long ramblings once I get into a discussion! :D

That does sound coincidental. XD

I have to agree with you, Saradus, that it's the chemistry between Light and L (and later on Near and Mello, but not so much) that makes the manga and anime so good. They are always one step ahead of each other, often thinking the exact same thing, and knowing the other is thinking the same.

Also, one major reason for me to pick up that first volume of Death Note in the first place was the artwork. That very first page where you see Ryuk looking out over the Shinigami realm is just so wonderfully done, and Takeshi Obata didn't stop doing his best there. :)
