karuta is a traditional new years day card game based on ancient poetry. One person reads off the first couple of lines and te rest of the group scrambles around trying to find the card (they are spread out on the floor) that finishes the poem.
Nowadays they have kids versions with popular characters (my kids have hello kitty and hamutaro ones) that focus on one of the Japanese alphabets (hiragana, katakana, kanji)instead of ancient poems.
