Do you sleep on a futon? I love futon, it's so cosy ;)

Do you like futon or is sleeping on the floor incredibly uncomfortable??

We don't sleep on a futon, but I've always wanted to try it. We can order real Japanese style futon here, but my husband is not very interested. He is used to sleeping in a bed, because he slept in one most of his life. He and his sister got their own beds and they each got their own room, while their parents slept on the futon.

We have one in both bedrooms, extra firm. I made low platforms to get them up off the cold wood floors though. Plus, when you get old, it's harder to get up from so low!

I would add "Yes, because it is there" on the poll :) I'll sleep on whatever is at hand. I just happen to have a futon now, so that is what I use. I don't have central heat/air, so I need to have bedding that can be moved into either the room with the air-con, or the room with the heater. If I had heat/air I would probably sleep on a bed (or a continually deployed futon) because I am lazy.

sorry good point Mandylion - any idea how I can add that to my poll? edit button says only for moderators.....

Even in NZ we slept on a kind of futon.... Hubby hates soft beds and I'm ok with that because I grew up with a really firm bed.
I love futons, but sleeping on the floor does feel like I have more of a chance that bugs will crawl over me at night.........

Ever wonder why Japan has such an abundancy in neck aches? Futons is the reason why. Well ... Even people who sleep on beds here get them often .. why? ... ever laid on a japanese bed? ... oh what's that you say ? you havn't ? .. hmm well have you ever laid on a slab on concrete? same thing! Japan has absolutely NO IDEA when it comes to comfort in the sleep department. I have this awful matress ... rock solid.. over that I put a futon ( like 3" thick " ) and rest my head on a real feather pillow. Still get awful muscle pains. Japan needs to think about REAL comfort ( like double layer , anti roll together , matresses ).

The Japanese do like firm sleeping surfaces. The mattress I inherited via marriage is about as close to concrete as you can get, I think! I wound up putting the thickest, softest mattress pad I could buy on top of it, and then went out and bought a featherbed to go on top of that. It is now more like plywood instead of concrete... :p

I never slept on a futon until I came to Japan. Ever since then I sleep on them (even now) and I have no complaints. I tried sleeping on a waterbed a couple times... phfft.

You forgot to give a plain "No" option on your poll. I only sleep on futon if I am visiting somebody in Japan or on vacation at a ryokan or onsen hotel. I like futons mainly because they are a novelty and hold vacation memories. I wouldn't want to sleep on one daily -- not a typical single-layer one anyway.

I don't have a real futon, but it comes close... actually it's thinner and harder... yes, I like sleeping on the floor, much more if it's not hard as hard or cold as the actual floor, so even a blanket is good enough sometimes

I have a little pillow I put under my lower back and that helps it rest so much better

;)

my wife doesn't like it, though, she's used to beds, although she did accept to have the mattress on the floor, next to me hehe

Nice try, but actually your statement is completely the opposite of the truth. Ask any physiotherapist or osteopath and they will tell you that a futon is a pretty good surface on which to sleep in order to maintain a well supported back and neck. It is in fact the soft mattresses of western countries that cause problems because your spine is in a curved position when sleeping.

Since when have people wondered why Japan has such an abundancy of neckaches? It's not something I've ever considered to be particularly prevalent here more than any other country. Japan doesn't "need" to think about anything. If you don't like the sleeping arrangements here, that's your problem, not Japan's.

Personally, myself and my girlfriend both sleep on 2 single futons next to each other. This is largely it's not worth buying a double, since we both had single futons when we met. Although I think we're planning to move to a new apartment in the new year, so we might get a new one then.

wrong.. A natural position for your lower back is infact curved inward with your upper back out. This causes the least stress on the spine possible. How else do you explain the super soft "nasa" technology pillows and matresses avalible in many stores now .. even in japan ( i'm sure you know the ones ). They are very far off a futon. Whilst your' information appears to be educated due to your use of grammer. It is merely your oppinion.

I am not the only person who has ever wondered why Japan has such an abundancy in neck aches. Infact it was my own wife ( japanese ) who pointed it out to me in a discussion between her , her mother and I. My wife stated to me that she didn't suffer a single neck ache in my own country whilst she was there but now she gets them frequant. Try walking around osaka and taking note of the vast amount of people rubbing thier necks. Take note of the television commercials which frequantly address the subject of neck aches. Then get back to me when you've done so.

neko_girl22
Oct 6, 2003, 10:48
hmmm I agree with Tiger. I always heard that firm mattresses are better for your back. My parents have back problems and I remember travelling with them and we HAD to find hotels that had firm mattresses hehe....
My mum also has osteoarthritis in her neck/shoulders and her pillow is quite firm. Not fluffy and soft.
Japanese pillows filled with buckwheat are supposed to be the best for necks. My hubby got a bad neck/backache from NZ pillows so I bought him a Japanese style pillow.

I inherited my Grandma's bed when I was a child which was especially designed for her bad back - it's really firm and that's why I have no problem sleeping on the floor - although I prefer a futon :p

I seem to think that hard surfaces are better for necks and backs too. I remember my doctor telling me to lie on the wood floor, flat on my back, to help my back pain. I thought that lying on a hard surface was better for keeping the vertebrae in line?

> Try walking around osaka and taking note of the vast amount of people rubbing thier necks.

And note how many people sleep sitting down on the train with their heads down, only held up only by their neck muscles. If that ain't a major source of neck pain I don't know what is.

I've tracked down some official medical advice. Of course, each to their own and you can sleep however you want! Excercise is the best remedy in my opinion. Stay fit with stretching and/or yoga along with other preventative techniques. Here are a few I found:

"Sleep smart. Lie on a firm mattress. Use pillows for support, but don't use a pillow that forces your neck up at a severe angle." Mayo Clinic, Rochester, MN, USA .

"When sleeping
* Use a firm mattress.
* Lie on your side with your knees bent.
* Place a pillow between your knees if it is more comfortable.
(University of Washington Department of Orthopaedics and Sports Medicine, 2002).
Sleeping:
Use a firm mattress for sleeping. A feather pillow or rolled-up towel will support your neck when you are sleeping on your side or back. Don't use a pillow when you sleep on your stomach. A 1-1 1/2 inch roll can be used to help maintain your lower inward curve. ( Cornell University Health Services)

The only contrary (soft mattress) info i found was supplied by mattress manufacturers.

Ill take it you know what a futon is! its a friken 2" thick matress type thing. No springs , and usualy on a tatami floor ( hard ). On this you will usualy ( in japan ) have a bean filled pillow which is hard as hell. tell me again you think this is comfortable!! Japan's idea of sleep comfort SUCKS , don't you try and tell me different!

Oh i got a better idea !!!!!111 lets put red and white covers over the land we will build the house on!!!1111 that will be even better!!!!!!!!!

Awww man! why did out house fall down in an earthquake!? can't of been because it was built of cheapy crappy wood and plastic ... " Hey .. try painting the wooden skirting in your typical japanese house .. a japanese person will hate you for it. They think that wood has some sort of power which requires no maitenance. stupid people ... stuuuuuupid.

Whilst we're on the subject of houses in japan... ask a japanese person what the area at the entrance of a house is for .. i mean REALLY for. They will come out with the most stupid reason you can think of.

our japanese pillows aren't filled with beans though, they're filled with millet and they're very, very comfortable. i suppose it's a matter of taste. i never have neck aches (or back aches for that matter) using the neck pillows. to me, the springs and such in mattresses are uncomfortable, but many people find them comfortable.

Okay, okay. I'm seriously considering getting a futon, and finding this conversation very frustrating.

How about, let's decide on a definition of a futon. The Japanese futon is the tradition one; but the American one appears to be a sofabed.

neko_girl22

Salaryman - I honestly find futon wonderfully comfortable. and I love the big super fluffy winter duvets.
I have recently changed from a pillow filled with buckwheat (or something similar) to a western pillow and my neck is worse - no kidding! I think the western one is too flat. I think I'll change back!

Haivart - When I came came back to NZ after my first trip to Japan it really used to annoy me to see uncomfortable sofa's labelled as futons..... why do they give it that name???

This is an average Japanese futon:

Nzueda, that is a most uncomfortable looking futon-sofa. They might call it that because some GI didn't want to sleep on the floor, so a frame was made for the futon, that was a bed at night and a sofa by day. (At least, that sounds good) I know what you mean about the pillows--they're too soft, so I think I'll try a filled one.

Yeah, being on a Navy ship ain't The Love Boat, this I know from first hand experience.

Besides the thin mattresses, berthing compartments are pretty cramped on all but the largest ships, bunks are three high and you have precious little space for personal effects, showers are communal and privacy almost nonexistent.

And that's the lap of luxury compared to submarines where space is at even more of a premium, reserved for equipment and weaponry. Hell, it's not uncommon for crewmen to sleep directly over torpedoes!!!

Bottom line, the Navy life isn't for everyone!

I dislike futons really.

They seemed really uncomfortable too me. When I sleep I toss and turn alot, especially in summer when its hot. Nothing worse than tossing over too hard and smacking your knee into the floor because your 'matress' is only two inches of foam.

So I took advantage of the opportunity and moved the frame out of my room (To prevent it from someone trying to fix it again, for it only to break out at the most inconvient of times.. Heh.) So now I am pretty much sleeping on a futon (I guess it is my mattress, but basically the same thing as a futon) I used to not have a bed and when I finally got one I didn't welcome it with open arms.. Heh. It's back to the floor for me and I must say I am quite content with it.. Heh.

I wouldn't exactly call that the same thing...You are still supported by springs, much like sleeping on the bed still. On a futon you are only supported by the floor. But your view is the same! :D

It doesn't really matter to me what I sleep on.
I slept in trucks, cars, floors, beds, tarps, carpets, grass, concrete.
Beds and futons are more comfortable.
But I dont use even a medium sized pillow

I don't sleep on a futon, as I like my own big bed!!! :D I do often sleep on futon on the floor when I am visiting friends and family in Japan, and I don't have any problems with it....I just like beds and mattresses better... :-)

Isn't a Futon a sofa/couch with a pull-out bed?

If so: NO!! I like my beddo! Of course, I have tried the traditional Japanese blanket and pillow on the tatami. The tatami was comfortable, but, um, I don't like sleeping on a flat object! Especially one that hardly represents Newton's 3rd Law!

Hi All,
I have a question for those of you who do sleep on a futon. I understand they are made to fold up and put away during the day. The question I have is this: how do you fold up a full size futon? I would like very much to get one (back problems) but my wife wont let me have one unless it is full size. Thanks for any responses :-)

Come to think of it, I did sleep on a futon while I was in the Navy! When you're stationed onboard ships, the mattresses for bunks in living quarters were no more than three, maybe four inches deep, and that's placed on a flat, hard metal surface which served as your locker space, so I can say I've kinda "enjoyed" the futon experience!
:D

I sleep under my futon...yeah, I have a bed, so I sleep on a mattress. In the Autumn it was nice and hot every night, so usually I would not even have a blanket on top of me. Since Winter arrived I have been so cold, and I don't have enough blankets, that I just use the futon in my room as another blanket...very comfortable indeed, and it keeps me warm after I've been lying there for long enough.

I've been sleeping on a thin futon for the past three months, and I hate it. I'm never achey or anything, and I don't have trouble falling asleep, but I miss my bed in Canada. It's one of the things I'm looking forward to for when I go home. My thick, soft bed with my abudance of pillows and my goosedown duvet.

futons are one of those japanese beds where its layed on the floor right? :?Well, yes and no.
If you're talking about the futon-futon, yes you and Miss-Apollo7 are correct.
But if it's the international brand, like the one I had for 2 yrs, it could go on a bed frame, or even a sofa. In which case, the futon has become generic.

I had a collapsible futon sofa. I loved it!! I had to part with it when I got married. The wife says, you can't keep that filthy thing. I'm still not sure if she was refering to the futon, or me having used it for 2 yrs....a mystery I'd rather not know more....

I have slept on futon in tatami rooms and that was nice. Now that I'm moving to Tokyo I'm being offered futon as bed but there is no tatami mats.

Has anyone slept on a futon (japanese style) on hard wooden floor? I'm concerned it will be too hard and then it might get cold in winter since Japanese houses are not heated. Anyone that can confirm or ease my worries?

No. I house sat in a house with a futon. The next day I brought my camping pad to make it more comfy & that did the trick. I would never sleep on one by choice. However, if someone gave me free room & board in Japan, I would never complain.

I have slept on a futon over tatami before . . . best sleep I've ever had really. But, this was at a friend's house, and those times are long past.

I really longed for a futon bed again, but kake-futon plus shiki-futon plus tatami is terribly expensive!!! But, I could not totally hold back my desires, so I ended up buying a kake-futon to sleep under. I don't mind firm too much, so most times I just sleep on top of a sleeping bag thrown over my floor . . . :bluush: Anyway, I totally love my kake futon, which is nice and large (queen size). I just need to get it cleaned soon . . . oh, the bill!

Not here in the states, but whenever I am in Japan I sleep in futons exclusively as I think they are most comfortable and very good for the back.

I especially love sleeping in them in the wintertime when the futons are thick and heavy when there is no heat in the room. There is no better feeling than getting up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom freezing and getting back in that warm cozy futon-especially when there is also a warm body next to you in a double futon. Very nice indeed!

I like my futon.
Why? Because nobody can be hiding under my bed.

Been sleeping on them so long, that when I travel and stay at a hotel, I find I will stop when I enter the room, look at the bed and think to myself, "Oh, a bed."

Futons are comfortable if your not CHEAP. I was cheap and bought a $50 or so futon and its flatter then a pancake because its mostly cotton/foam in very thin form.

Need to get that memory foam stuff they make in futon form. Most Japanese stores; at least where i live; have cotton or wool. But, they are quality.

I dunno, avoid ikea when it comes to beds LOL....

When I was over there last time my employer set me up with my apartment and whatnot and included in that was a decent but still fairly cheap futon. I slept on it for a while but I found on some hot nights the flatness and lack of comfort was a make-or-break issue.

My gf at the time had a memory foam one and a memory foam pillow and I found that to be much better.

Eventually a neighbour threw out a perfectly good, intact, stain-free mattress (2nd hand stuff isn't big in Japan, people replace their stuff and often throw out perfectly good stuff). I checked it out and it looked clean so I dragged it into my apartment and that thing was really comfy. Actually it was the highest quality mattress I'd ever slept on.

I don't need a bed, actually I hate beds, I like being close to the ground. But the springyness of the mattress helps keep me asleep so a mattress thrown on the ground is kind of my favourite way to go. Actually, here at home that's what I have.

I quite like futons, but the condensation that collects on the underside of my futon especially during the winter is definitely a down point. I'm wondering if getting a small platform for my futon would reduce that.

I have slept on a futon several times but i've got my bed back now.

I find it comfortable sleeping on the floor with a quilt on it so futons are no problem really. (I don't know why i did that but i just seem to feel like sleeping on the floor sometimes)!

I can't call them futon I think but I am used to sleep on floor beds. They are filled with cotton and you lay them down on the floor when you want to sleep and then you roll them up and move them away in closets after you get up. i think they are better than those beds with strings.

Really depends on the quality of the futon. Westerners often use foam pads underneath the futon too...
