Hello.
I am a Japanese learner,but I'm still quite a newbie so I'm going to love this lounge.:happy:
So,I want to ask some questions.
Please bare with my ignorance. :bluush:

1._How can I get my IE (Internet Explorer) to show Japanese characters?

2._Where can I get a Japanese font which will allow me to actually WRITE Japanese on images or in Word?Will I have to install a language pack or is it just a font?

I thank you in advance.:bow:

ps:I hate the fact that the bowing smiley is a girl :box:

You should find answers to most of your questions here

Just holler if you need further assistance.

Oh, the bowing smilie is no girl, it's a bloke with a hair-clip, lol.

Here's the story:
I took almost two years of Japanese in high school, then I took a break for two years, and then started from scratch (JAPN 101) in college. I'm a rising junior now,

Of course there are still many words I don't know... although I should improve a lot during my 4-month stay in Japan. I'll be getting there on Sept 16 and I'm so excited about Tokyo! I'll be studying at Waseda Daigaku.

On the same topic Kiryoku had, I have WinMX and various Japanese language support programs which allow me to both read and write Japanese. However, WinMX doesn't seem to display Japanese characters or allow me to write them. Is there something in the settings that I have to alter or is there something I have to download with any program, for Japanese language support. I checked out the links you had and I couldn't find anything. Thanks!

Miyuki-san,
Here's an article that moved me to tears (about divorce in Japan and Koizumi's third son Yoshinaga Miyamoto):
http://www2.gol.com/users/coynerhm/divorce_japanese_style.htm

Other possible topics:
- use of cash vs. credit cards in Japan
- lifetime employment: is it as popular as it used to be?
- how young people see the Japanese economy, and what they hope for the future
- Japanese cars: Toyota, Honda, Nissan, Mazda etc.
- Junichiro Koizumi (we never get tired of him!)
- Masako Owada: I am interested in her story, and would like to know what other people think. It is a shame that such a smart, multillingual person with a potentially bright career sacrificed herself for Naruhito and now is hardly seen or heard in public...

These are all topics I'm interested in, and would like to discuss them with everyone else on this forum. ;)

Diana, yoroshiku.

Ok. You got em. If it's possible could you start the threads. I'll go off and fill em up.

Currently, though, a car thread is being developed. I was considering of splitting it though.

life time employment I touched briefly but you're right it should be given it's own thread.

hmm ... let's see if I can get to these over the weekend or next week.

cheers

@moyashi

Since you are "developing" threads, there's one topic I'd be interested in, social insurance in Japan...
:wave:

Not urgent, just thought I'd mention it as future topic. Perhaps I will start it myself later today.

Diana-san,
I am not clear about Masako-sana or Koizumi syusyo's life...
Our TV news seldom mention it but Koizumi syusyo is single and
we haven't had such syusyo for a long time.
For the first time,his cabinet earned 87% approval rating.
News said his caracter goods were populer item for visitors of Kokkai Gijido-(the Diet building).
(because he is single??? I don't know...^^ )

Yesterday Tanaka Makiko,a member of the Diet, resigned from the government. She didn't work well as a politician(...I think),but her
frank and open opinions were supported by other women.
Koizumi syusyo- said,'It was her own decition.
We have to respect it.'
News says it may help fuel the drop in the approval rating.

His son,Koizumi Ko-taro-
He is on TV commercials!

moyashi
Aug 10, 2002, 18:32
Yep, Kotaro does beer commercials.

There's a photoalbum out on Koizumi.

His cordinator is his sister and I think it was his brother who suggests his wardrobe or was this his sister too.

Recently during the World Cup Koizumi was seen with his sister.

looks like it's fun being able to speak japanese...

miyuki

Konnichiwa,chelosan.

Japanese students also try to learn new kanji or Enlgish words.
(But it is not easy....)
When you learn 'hiragana' first, you can prononciate
all Japanese sounds.
It helps you to learn short sentences.

hello miyuki-san,

i have learnt hiragana and katakana...
guess it's really hard learning japanese huh.

question: what does "darou" mean? I always hear my japanese boss say that to himself.

thanks...
have a great day!! :happy:

miyuki
Jun 14, 2003, 04:02
Hi,Celo. I give some examples.
I hope I can explain each cases well.

'darou' means 'conjecture.'
Woman use 'darou' in written word.
In spoken word, she uses 'desyo'or 'dawa' as usual.
Man uses 'darou' in both cases.

@Something runs across before your eyes and disappears.
Then man says, 'Nezumi darou.' or 'Tabun nezumi darou.'
(Woman)'Nezumi dawa.' or 'Tabun nezumi desyo.'

@ When you are waiting for your friend, bell rings.
M: I am sure 70%... 'Kare (Kanojyo) darou.'
W: 'Kare(Kanojyo) desyo(dawa).'
M: I am sure 100% 'Kare(Kanojyo) da.'
W: 'Kare yo.'

@ You got a mail with no address nor name.
(I think 70%...)'Kare kara darou.' or 'Dareka no itazura darou.'
'Dareka no itazura kamo shirenai.'(I think 'itazura 50%:itazura dewa nai 50%.')

@M:'iidarou? (ok?)'
W:'iidesyo? (ok?)'

@M:'iidarou.''iidesyo(more polite)'(I agree with you.)
W:'iidesyo.'

<verb + (no)+ darou>
@When you hear the sound.
M:Ame ga futteiru no darou.
W:Ame ga futteiru no desyo.

@It will be rain.
M:'Ame ga furu no darou.'or 'Ame ga furu darou.'
W:'Ame ga furu no desyo.'or 'Ame ga furu desyo.'

:wave:
