:note:For a while now my friends and I have been sword fighting (myself being the only girl:eek: ). Well we haven't sword fought (with wooden practice swords of course) in a while. We don't have a teacher or any type of "technique." We use our own fighting style, and I guess it's a pretty barbaric and incompedent way of fighting, but we have fun :p
It took me a while for the guys to actually hit me hard :wary: but I did it! :relief: I fought once with my friend, but fist fighting :box: don't ask me why:o He was scared at first cuz he thought he was going to hurt me, but then we started getting rough and we both came home with bruises from punching and kicking eachother :auch:
Well I hadn't fought with my katana, for almost half a year! I really had to train:angryfire I had been reading from a strategy book, by one of my favorite Japanese heros...Miyamoto Musashi! It helped so much, I was never really strong with the sword, but today I kicked ***!:smug: Believe in yourself and you can achieve anything!!!
I got more hits than my oponnent. (He was a hand hitter! I hate hand hitters) :rolleyes:My whole right hand is bruised up on my knuckles and joints:bawling: and I have bruises all over my legs and arms. I felt bad though, I was making him slightly bleed on his right arm:( He had to wear an ice pack :giggle: I hit him more times, he's all bruised up too, but we both exchanged good moves. We have a "no hitting neck up, and groin area (for guys) policy" that we both broke:p I smacked him in the jaw  and he hit my neck (that was a good move!) even though they were mistakes:bluush: I think I did well:victory: Atleast I did'nt break a nail, lol!
wow, u sound like one........ interesting little girl. well i cant say little cuz u are older than me, but i am sure i am bigger than you. did u beat any of the guys at punching and kicking?

uhh...well..my technique is sorta self-taught, except using moves from games and anime. I mean, who's gonna teach me how to use a staff? Plus, all my wooden weapons are built around my technique, not the other way around. I can beat a kid up with bare hands if has a stick, but when I get that stick from him, he runs :D
(and these kids are all my age, just that the only fighting they can do is a punch)
that's great , kick their butts! :D
I don't sword fight but when I started boxing none of my friends
( all guys ) would fight me even though I did better than them in class.
They all said that if they boxed me that I'd get really hurt and they didn't want that to happen , I still say they were scared. The first time they wouldn't even try I had to hit one of them square it the mouth like twice before they would even began to fight back ; even when they did they were trying to miss on purpose! That's okay cause after a while went by and I still didn't let up on my hard hits :box: they began hitting me back , weak though .
Well I guess it is nice that they felt so bad about hitting me when I was smaller than them.
Hope you do well with your sword fighting Gookan !!!

Thanks so much! Keep on practicing everyone!!!
Ok you all are crazy lol.. jeez.. It might be wise that you get training gear so you DON'T get "bruised up on.. knuckles and joints." That's what they're made for..
If you're looking to train with a staff, then you'd want to find a [good] Shaolin school. I've seen students from that art make good use of a staff. Unfortunately, you won't be able to use your own technique when using it for a while, but work with it long enough and you can tweak it to your liking as I've seen other people do.

i myself made a wooden sword and broke it a week later
but it dealt dammage.

oh well there's my two cents

something to see. One night in the bar I worked in 3 tough American military guys refused to pay their bill. They all pulled fancy switch-blades.
The master of the bar took his wooden sword out, which caused the 3 guys to laugh; the Master only being 4' 11. About 10 seconds later they were on the floor in pain reaching for the money they owed. Everyone stood open mouthed and in awe !!

Ya it's a lot of fun! ^_^ and I can't really afford to by protection, except maybe some gloves. I don't mind getting hurt, I'm gonna fight again on friday, My brusies will mostly heal by then. I wanted to take Kendo at this dojo a 1/2 from my house, but It's expensive to buy the armor ($500!).

I have my own wooden Waki Sashi. I found a curved stick in my backyard, got the steel file out, and grinded for 15 hours until it was perfect. Worth every minute too.

I did some Iaido, got the swords for it, as well as a kendo uniform, shinai and bokken. Dont have any armour tho, i left due to boredom (3 people is not fun) and took up Shorinji kempo, a self defence based martial art. ALOT of fun, get into to it if you get the chance.

I'd really love too learn Kendo and Iaido but there aren't any places near me that teach it as far as I know.
Iaido is the art of drawing the sword isn't it?

Sounds like your just playing ;) get some shinai's and some gloves at least or else your likely to hurt someone.
Iaido is called the art of drawing the sword, but its more of a cerimony, like the formalities involved when you meet another warrior, removing the sword when greeting a supior and bowing, and taking the sword and attacking, while kendo is general sword fighting.

That's rich. It's a killing art. A very fast killing art. Not much killing done these days is all.

Hmm, thats funny, pc wont show the text sacred blue wrote, but all other japanese stuff is ok :S
Yeah, Ieido is a killing art but its not used like that anymore for obvious reasons. If you ever see the movie (ratoichi? i forget) about the blind swordfighter, what he does is basically ieido. But i like to look at the beauty of it, and the history behind it, not the 'ooo, its a killing art, a fast killing art' etc.

Same here, I think as sword fighting as another art, just like painting, and tea ceremony ^o^ and yes I've heard of the blind samurai guy, my friend told me about him a couple months back ^_^()

Do you all live in Japan? I'm just curious because i'm in the USA and i don't know of any place that teaches sword fighting or martial arts here. Me and my friends are mainly sword fighters though but i've been looking for a martial arts place to practice. We can't go out in our yards and have an all out fight for fun lol I wish we could but our parents won't like us being brused from fighting unless there was a scool I could fight at.

Hello all, think about your 'backyard bokkenjutsu'...consider this. You can go to any bar and get in a fight with a pool stick. I gurantee it. In which case any REALLY formal and true training in staff would make you better even with the 'other than' martial art weapon. If you are going to go for blood and bruises before you even really know the art, why not go get some REAL metal swords and kick the damage up a notch??
I know it is exciting...but ypou may as well beat eachother with chairs or branches. It is not martial art...IF that is, you understand martial art to be the culmination of all you could be learning as correct techniques and mental attitude that bashing on eachother. I get it...but also i have seen too many external martial artists(are you even that??)that would not stand a chance with any mediocre aikidoist that had taken the correct form of training. What quality do you want to bring? to have?
It requires no armor to sit with your bokken extended to a 1/2 " circle at about 45 degrees upward in front of you AND NOT HAVE THE TIP LEAVE THAT CIRCLE. Inner warriors can do that. Can you?? for 5 minutes? How about an hour? You will find all kinds of things out about yourself when you try. Bruises and blood are easy to give and get. You lose today and win tomorrow and it never means anything beyond the consistence or inconsistence you actually discover is yours. Same goes for knowledge and skill. You can show ans speak of bruises and blood. You know what you have and what you don't INSIDE. So will those who really KNOW when you face them. Otherwise you may as well just wrap yourself in a Bruce Lee poster and hope for the best.
Glad for you, GookanGohan
I am found of fencing too. With some boldness i dare say that i passed that stage of yours (although, with european style). But now i am into kenjutsu and let me give you some advice (but i am not chiselling in since we also percieve it on our own with help of books, videos and common sence)
If you practice ... m-mmm ... live fencing i strongly recommend you get some protective gear, especially if you do not 'fix' your blows (to fix means to stop it close to the body, or end up with slightest touch)
Knuckles are to suffer first, then goes the forearm. Joints are easily damaged and take long time to heal completly, if you don`t want to end up with fingers crooked by arthritis get gloves. Or make padded ones on opisthenar (or whatever is the word for a rear side of the palm :D)
Next, watch out for the head and collar bones.
Since you are the only girl, don`t try to overcome guys with force. Most
of the times this is not your way; motion, stamina, dexterity, speed and precise strokes - that`s what you can do better. Learn to use inertia of your partner and of your own.
Motion is very important. Sword, hands, body and legs (pay a lot of attention to what they are doing) must act altogether. Perhaps, you heard about the idea of 'Ken - Ki - Tai'. Your mind and spirit are not allowed to wander. The whole world named 'you' must be in process of training, in fencing. It`s not easy, but experience accumulates by tiny drops with every effort, but can be lost in gallons when is not given proper attention.
But still, i think you should get book and take your time on learning basics, read the advices of masters of martial arts, Kendo and so on. Fencing is not a funny game, it`s a hard work and strong discipline, respect for your partners, for the sword and for yourself.
And, please, give some attention to the Firesword post. Everyday trainig, repitition of same movement hundreds of times are 50% of succes on your way toward the Swordsman

I keep my bokken where I can see it often. Because even when it is not in my hands it inspires a moment of insight into what I can do better with it. It is these mini moments of enlightenment that feed my progress as well as the seriousness in which I face an opponent. When you look for a snake you do not find it but it is when you are relaxed that you will probably stumble upon one. So always be ready, as I believe very much that the ancient and modern spirit of martial art is around us like air. It is up to you to decide if you will breathe it or not.
do you know who your martial spirit connections are? I am very close to Master Ed Parker and 'O-Sensei' Morihei Ueshiba. Like Electricity in my nerves when I humbly recognise their eternal strength. The wind moves through every tree, and loses nothing and so it is with the spirit of martial art Masters. 'O-Sensei' was able to throw men away even while weak with cancer...but will you be when your unwise bashing with bokken leaves you with arthritis and poor techniques trained into your own spirit? Lets not be counterfits in the shadows of the masters but reflect their light and approach with worthiness. Or else your bokken is just wood. And your spirit is only ordinary. Think of all the extraordinary open to discover! You should aim for the time when you are not seen as a mediocre body with clearly defined boundaries of skill...but a dancer on the edge of the Enigma that every true master is. You will never see a baby raven floundering as it learns to fly...they seem only to be apparent once they have gained the grace of flight. You should move sure and humble until you too are seen for the grace of your flight in Martial arts. Martial art is very high endeavor in true form and so do not bring careless blood and wrong attention to it. Be worthy in your mind and respect and it may bless you with worthiness in ability.
