Why do people how don't like anome think it stops at Dragonball Z and Pokemon. I mean i like DBZ but its not even close to my top ten favorite list. Mabye you guys and girls can answer this Question, cause it make me mad when people sell anime short like that.

I men't to say who, not how
I would say because they are the most visible anime in the states, at least. Most people know nothing about Kenshin, Evangelion, Escaflowne, Cowboy Bebop, Berserk, etc., because they aren't the big craze like the two that you mentioned are. I hate when people say things to me like, "you like Yuu Gi Oh, right?" and then point to the Kenshin on the shelf. Yeah, like they're the same thing. Anyway, most people here associate anime with the abovementioned shows, and animation in general with kiddie shows (although I suppose The Simpsons and Family Guy are changing that a bit, I hope).
I liked pokemon when I was little, it was like crack for kids, and DBZ was ok but you dident see me going nuts for it.
Now I go for more mature and...adult(heh) anime, throwing balls at animals and fighting a super speeds dont apeal to me anymore.
Besides, those are old shows anyways, I like new stuff
oops, missread the topic. sorry.
I much rather watch DBZ than most anime! It's so simple and easy to get into the story... but yet... interesting enough for someone looking for a story like a book filled with chapters. Also, it's much easier to show on television compared to most of the anime out there. No parent wants their kid watching tentacles violating girls or guys heads splattering everywhere with lots of blood... Pokemon and DBZ are just easier to sell to audiences...

because thats all they know.
if they are not interested, why and how would they know more than the mainstream, cartoon network shows?

because access to the real stuff is actually quite limited and has to be imported here
otherwise its just a couple of little things on TV

Thats why we must educate the ignorant!!!!!!
[Holds up sign that reads] Find different type of anime then dragon ball and pokemon you nut!
And thanks for reference to escaflowne glenn, people be missing it. Its not really limited nowadays, use to be but not now, you can go to like borders bookstore and they have all types of anime. ITs just people see that all the time everywhere and just watch those. Anime needs more.....commercials you could say or just put out more. I always tell people bout different kinds of anime and get them watching and hooked!
Most anime I can't seem to get into... just don't enjoy it... I tried Naruto or however you spell it a few months ago... watched episode one... I was bored. I really enjoyed Season 1 and 2 of Slayers and Seasons 1-3 of Ranma... all the seasons after that were didn't grab my attention... oh, and record of lodoss war was cool for seasons 1 and 2...

I'm just saying it makes me mad when people think they love anime as much as me and all they watch is DBZ.
Get over it... there will always be someone who will annoy you. =)
And people will always rant/vent about what annoys them. :)

The whole marketing really lets people who arent interested in anime know of at least DBZ and Pokemon.
But this is why I love living in the SF bay area. For years a public access station showed anime that was, for the time, new. They showed Sakura Taisen, Uresai Yatsura, Please Save My Earth, Key, and for a bit even Ranma.
They've showed some greats. I remember also, that Sci Fi used to have anime festivals years ago, before it REALLY took off in mainstream.

Ah, that's what happens in my middle school. I helped start an anime club there recently, and I can't tell you how many people asked if we were just going to sit around and watch Pokemon. (We had our first meeting last Thursday, and we watched Speed Racer and Rurouni Kenshin.) I can say that word about the meeting spread, and hopefully, it's going to open some people's eyes to the world of anime.
Lots of people annoy me like that, but then I annoy them back by saying some of my favorite quotes from anime in japanese... muwaha.
Idiot: Hey, look, it's Ms. Japanimation! (one of my many nicknames)
Me: Anata baka?! (thank you, Asuka)
Idiot: Wha-?
Me: BAKA!
Ha ha, it's great fun. If they annoy you, ignore them.

I had this happen to me soo many times...
In class I was drawing random anime characters and they asked if it was Yu-gi-oh...wtf?
Then they start asking me if I like pokemon. I simply tell them that those are the crappy anime shows....
it annoys me though.. ¬_¬

You know whats even funner? Having the hutzpuh to put them down in English. No offense, but its a lot more satisfactory, to me at least.
Maybe because they don't know what anime actually is and they just keep seing this 2 animes advertised on tv..

yes indeed.
Many people see anime has being something made for kids (damn Pokemon and DBZ). They may watch a few episodes, but they will get bored and say 'What's the point? Its the same thing over and over.'
People who judge anime by Pokemon and DBZ need to be shown non-mainstream animes. My older brother (a country guy like myself) always thought all anime was like Pokemon or DBZ. That was until I showed him Street Fighter: The Movie and Wrath of The Ninja. That changed his tune, but I wouldn't call him a fan yet. Like most people he just needed to see the better side of anime.
Everytime I pull Anime/Manga/Manwha out people ask me "oh Sailor Moon?" < SAILOR MOON :emblaugh: there was this one time when my cousins came over and I had posters up of Final Fantasy and they said "Oh Sailor Moon..." < again with the SAILOR MOON! urgh~! >D Oh well what I can I do about it. Yu gi Oh is alright... but SAILOR MOON! That's sooo old school! oO Don't get me wrong I was a big Sailor Moon fan but that was when it was actually on Tv.

I hate how people judge anime before they've even seen any of it. True, most of them have seen the mainstream animes, but those are few and far between. Anime has something for everyone and if you look a bit harder you'll find something to your likeing. One of my friend's mother won't allow her to watch anime because she thinks it's bad. Not all anime is bad. Sure you've got your hentai, but there is more decent faimly oriented animes out there. Pokemon is one of those. Sailor Moon is a good against evil that doens't have much violence or blood and such. I wish people wouldn't be so narrowminded sometimes. Why is it if we here one thing bad about something we think it's all bad? We all have bad stuff about us: selfishness, laziness, no consideration for others, but we also have our plus sides. I wish people would just take the time to look at the positive side of things. The part of the glass that is half full.

I also agree that in anime, their is one for everyone of us. I remember back when I was younger, I was all into anime that had alot of fighting, and I grew to love that, even when I was 19, but as soon as I hit 20, I dunno what happened, but I wasn't to big into fighting anymore, so I grew out of it. Now being 21yrs old, I'm very picky with anime, for example I don't really like Naruto, it's not that Naruto isn't good, I love the animation for it, the storylines pretty cool too, but theirs too much fighting. I don't mind fighting but when theirs too much, I grow tired of it, reasons why I bought Kare Kano, only fighting in there is the kendo fights, about it.
I dunno what happened to me, funny thing is, I'll watch DBZ over Naruto, yeah, I know, DBZ has tons more fighting, but man, I used to watch it when I was little and it was imported from Japan, with NO english subtitles, so it's just to satisfy my child part of me. I also have to say that DBZ, and Sailor Moon are no pushover animes, for they have spawned tons of anime episodes for their part, which shows that they weren't just some fluke, especially DBZ, having the original DB, then DBZ(over 200 episodes just here alone), and the GT series. They definetly deserve credit where it's due.

Same here. The first anime that I was really hooked into was the Moonfaced one. Still like it since August 1995. Now there's a live-action version of the show, so you know the legacy of a young gal with blond pigtails and blue eyes, pearls and a white gown with crescent on forehead is still popular.
Btw gang, what is manwha? Not to be disrespectful of the genre and/or its fans, but does it have to do with Native Americans or indigenous people all over the world, or the WWF? :emblaugh:
its cause their all BAKAS

The people centralizes Anime to much with DBZ and Pokemon.
I was a great DBZ fan but when I discovered all the others Anime:
 Ahhhhhh , I thought, how I could watch DBZ all this time!!
Then Pokemon, I have to admit, I still watch the new seasons :relief:
Well the only thing we should say about those "kids animes"
..............For commercial use only......
Animes like Chobits, CowboyBebop, Hellsing (three very different sorts of anime) are for us!!!! :D

I like DBZ and pokemon when i was little, then i grew up, i felt that anime not suitable to me already...(but I also will choose some 'good' animelah..) Don't know why? Doesn't matter how you try.... now, I only fancy at Inuyasha, Conan, Gundam W only... others they can't seem attracting anymore.......No~~~

well its really gotta do with it with the amount shown on the tv. Here in holland anime isnt that liked by people esp kids. I used to rent some akira animes and such if ya can see how good anime can be than i do think people will change their opinion about it.
but i guess most of the anime shown here...is on demand for the kids. Easy as that.

I have seen neither DBZ nor Pokemon, and I like my anime. But as I live in the UK (and therefore can't see it on television), I only watch stuff that I have either bought on DVD or downloaded from animesuki.com and the like.

Well, my guess is that because DBZ (which I can't stand) and Pokemon (ditto) was so omnipresent on TV, both broadcast and cable, uninformed people early on probably thought those shows were the sum total of anime, which of course isn't true.
Also, DBZ and Pokemon have tremendous appeal to young kids who enjoy the simplistic, uncomplicated nature of those shows. Shows like Neon Genesis Evangelion, Ruroni Kenshin or Please Save My Earth would go right over their heads. And you can bet your bottom dollar they'd avoid shojo like the plague!!
But with The Anime Channel soon to become more widespread, perhaps more people will come to realize that there's more to anime than the stuff seen on DBZ and Pokemon.

I think that if anime got known everywhere and it was talked about everyday, it would get "boring" in a way and would lose it's specialness. I say let the ignorant be ignorant, if they happen to like anime then good for them.

Maybe commoners perceive anime as cartoons and they have a mindset that cartoons are only meant for kids and nobody else. In that sense, if adults watch anime, people will say that they had not grown up and matured yet..... I think this might one of the probable cause..

Thanks, jeisan. I feel like an idiot, because after I posted I realized that I could have searched for it. So I did, and I found that site. Here is one thing that I can't seem to find anywhere on the site, though: are the anime subbed, dubbed, or dubtitled? It wouldn't be worth it to me to watch dubbed or dubtitled anime. Thanks again for your help, jeisan!

The whole "DBZ/Pokemon/Sailor Moon" thing really pisses me off personally.
Most people around here see anime as nothin' but a cartoon (and therefore extremely childish) but there are so many anime out there that I would never let my kid see (if I had one) o.o

Yeah, and you would think that shows like "The Simpsons," "Futurama," "King of the Hill," and "Family Guy" would be changing that stigma about animation. It's not just anime that has themes for adults, there are some animated shows right here in the US that are obviously made for adults, so I find it odd for anyone to still think that animation is for children only.
Flashjeff
May 17, 2004, 17:22
Well, to most folks, anime, no matter how adult themed or sophisticated will always be seen as just another form of cartoon. Those people will never see the lights of day and shouldn't be bothered with as their minds are closed and locked.

You're really right. You'd think people would begin to change their views at least a little. I'm only a little tired of being made fun of for having a hobby that involves animation. And yes, those people are definitely closed minded. I think fools like that should drop off the face of the planet -.-
That's it...no more o' them. I'm sick of dealing with their ignorance.
It is normal ... many people do not get it right, because they are stupid.. It is obvious u can't judge on anything unless u know it very well...
Well the people in my place they keen on anime and adore it, it’s making me so unique among them, when I know so much about anime … :-)
